NRA breaks their silence

NRA breaks their silence Post Rating (12 votes)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation's largest gun-rights lobby is calling for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings."

The National Rifle Association broke its silence Friday on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead.

The group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference that, quote, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

I don't have a problem with the idea.  Certainly prefer seeing trained officers or securtiy guards than teachers/administrators with conceal and carry.

An NYT reporter did some quick math on the NRA's proposal (btw, for those of you who are watching, is this press conference as much of a disaster as it is being portrayed by the media?)

99,000 public schools x ($55,010 median pay for a police officer + $10k in benefits) = $6.4 billion a year.

The cost would immediately cripple the idea. Especially in smaller communities and school districts that have such little funding to begin with.

Implementing an idea like this would further force districts to close and consolidate their schools because they wouldn't have enough money to meet any new security standards.

Columbine had an armed police officer on school grounds.

Not a disaster. The NRA is just completely detached from reality, and will defend their gun addiction at all costs.

Don't like the idea myself but don't kid yourself anything Obama/Biden recommend is going to cost a hell of a lot more that 6.4 billion.  That is if cost is your primary concern.  wink

The columbine shooters also used weapons that most proposed bans will not cover.

Now what?

10 armed police officers per school?

Whatever solution will allow me to keep my guns. Cuz, god, I love my guns.

Hey, I have an idea why don't just once suggest a solution instead of going into default naysayer mode.

Why couldn't the NRA pony up $6.4 bil + or whatever their stupid armed cop in every school idea would cost.  They put the onus instead on Congress and the US taxpayer, lest they should have to pay for anything that their AR-15 loving psycho asses wreak on our society.

What a silly idea.

I read a statistic the other day that said the US owns 50% of the world's guns. I have no idea if it's true, but it wouldn't surprise me. The only practical solution I can really come up with is making the process to buy a gun lengthier and more thorough in order to weed out those who have no business owning a gun.

"Banning" guns is just a political talking point and not realistic. I think you start making people who want to buy guns take some test saying they are in good mental health or maybe you say anybody who wants to buy a gun needs to be evaluated by a psychiatrist first. There are plenty of responsible gun owners out there and I wouldn't want to deprive them of their right. But as we all know, there are a lot of goofy people out there who have no business having a gun in their possession.
