I am thinking this was done so that Heaps can transfer to a D2 school, and play as a senior.

KU football needed this positive news.

It's clear Cozart is the only choice for what we are going to try and do offensively and with the pieces we have.

He's young. We'll need him to mature rather quickly and gain consistency he hasn't shown yet, but his raw atheltic ability is clearly far superior to the other options.

Re: Cozart named Starting QB

Five days after Cozart earned offensive MVP honors in the annual spring game, KU coach Charlie Weis officially named him the Jayhawks’ starting quarterback.

Cozart, a sophomore from Bishop Miege, led the Blue team to a 20-10 victory while completing six of 10 passes for 58 yards. He also rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns in seven carries.

Cozart beat out senior Jake Heaps and sophomore transfer T.J. Millweard for the starting job. Heaps had a solid spring, according to coaches, but he struggled to move the first-team offense during the spring game.

“After the completion of post spring ball evaluations and individual player meetings, I met with the offensive staff and we have decided to name Montell Cozart our starting quarterback,” Weis said in a statement released on Thursday morning.

Now it will be up to Cozart to run new offensive coordinator John Reagan’s no-huddle, spread scheme. Weis and Reagan previously said they hoped a starter would emerge by the end of spring ball, but they stayed mum on the quarterback spot after the spring game.

Heaps, a former transfer from BYU, completed 49 percent of his passes last season before being replaced by Cozart, then a true freshman. Cozart, also a threat in the running game, completed 36 percent of his passes while rushing for 214 yards on 66 carries during his freshman season.

Kansas will open the 2014 season on Sept. 6 against Southeast Missouri State at Memorial Stadium.

I like this a lot. His legs will get him out of a lot of trouble. AND he'll be our QB for three years. It's been a long time since we've had consistency at the QB position.

The way college offenses are being run now, he's the best fit and can give us the best chance to win.

Agree.  This gives me a reason to be excited for the season.  I like Heaps - seems like a good kid - just does not have the speed we need with our line.  This gives Cozart time to develop - we aren't going bowling this year - why not plan for the future instead of giving snaps to a senior.

I like that he'll show up to fall practices and get all the one reps. He needs to build chemistry with his guys and this will help.

I thought if he couldn't win the starting job then they should do all they can to redshirt him. He clearly looked the best on the field last Saturday and won the job. He'll be really good by the time he graduates.

I hope Weis puts out an early two deep just to give us something else to ponder whilst we wait for next September to roll around.

Great news.  Cozart showed glimpses of his potential last season.  A full off-season to gain strength and confidence will only help going into this season.  We've got a chance to have a really solid team if the offense can find a way to move the ball consistently.

Moose, I always enjoy your reports and inside scoop. I like the decision as well, but the QB transfers he has recruited all seem to be better suited to a different offense than the offense we will run, and believe should have run from day one. It gives us a better chance to move the ball, score points and win. And, I respect Charley's willingness to humble himself, admit a change is needed and then move forward.

However, I am interested in your thoughts on why he felt a pro-type offense, a pro-type system is what we needed initially. That leaves me scratching my head.

I really like the decisiveness of the new offensive coordinator. We had a real competition...it was obvious which QB has the most talent, and the staff made a logical and clear decision to clear up confusion. The old Chuckie Weis would have sat there with his thumb up his butt, just handing the job to Heaps, so Im proud of him for changing his ways. If Cozart can develop any sort of passing game, he will be something special. I'm excited for the future of this team.

He can also go to I-AA and be immediately eligible, or even to a I-A school if he is graduating this year.

Weis wanted to use the Stanford model at KU, but soon realized he couldn't recruit the same type of size and talent.  Hence the recent adjustment to more of a spread-option offense.
