Case for James Blackmon Jr making McDonalds AA squad

Case for James Blackmon Jr making McDonalds AA squad

I brought this over from a premium post since there's not much traffic there.  This network is the outlier in terms of rankings having him by far lower than everyone else, so it seems a good place to make the case.

It could be argued that Blackmon was the most consistently productive kid in the country this spring and summer.  Here's a few points to consider...

*  JB was unreal at Nike Global All Stars averaging 20 ppg and shooting 67% from the field.
*  JB was unreal at the Adidas Invitational in Ft Wayne this spring in between EYBL sessions.
*  JB was on the 10 man All Star team at the NBA Players Ass camp out of 110 players.
*  JB drew outstanding reviews at LeBron Camp.  He got hurt and missed the last day, but his team made it to the championship game (also at NBA camp).
*  JB was the 7th leading scorer in the EYBL going into Peach Jam (over 19 per game), that on a team with several other stars who often take a lot of shots.  He was the constant, the other guys less so.  JB shot .475 from 3 in the EYBL season.
*  JB led the state in scoring by a wide margin.  His schedule was ok, not great, but for comparison he did better than Deshawn Thomas at the same school.  If JB didn't have his injury, going off his high school averages and giving him the same production his senior year, he'd wind up the all time leading scorer in the state of Indiana.  And his efficiency numbers are fantastic, he doesn't take bad shots.

Here are some testimonials from some other more impressed scouts at other outlets this summer...

Eric Bossi from July 14... "Despite a tender ankle, James Blackmon was an absolute stud and scoring machine during the Spiece Indy Heat's final pool play game. The Indiana-bound shooting guard has an absolute heater (true jump shot) from deep and is much better off the bounce and as an athlete than given credit for. He had 27 points, six rebounds and four assists in a close loss and proved that his No. 33 national ranking is well earned and that he could be a legitimate candidate for the McDonald's All-American game next spring."  "I thought he was the best shooter in the NBA Players Association camp. Might have been the best shooter or at least as good a shooter as there was here (at LeBron). I saw him during drills. He's really good. I mean really good."

Frank Burleson in a Papa Bozich article on July 10... "The ankle injury cost Blackmon a spot on Burlison's Top 15 at LeBron, but he did select Blackmon as one of his top five players at the NBA camp. Blackmon will play his senior season for his father, former UK guard James Blackmon, at Marion (Ind.) High School.

Once the kid dominates his senior season the way he dominated his junior season and every single event he goes to in the summer, I suspect he's going to get that call from the McD AA folks.  Having watched him a lot, I think he is undersold as a defender and athlete.  He's not an elite athlete but he finishes at the rim with some moxie with regularity.  He played some point for his EYBL team as they were frequently under staffed and isn't a point between the ears he's a blood thirsty scorer, but has a nice enough handle to do so.

From my perspective, his athleticism was never elite, but was solid and it has returned slowly but surely.  For a long time people have recognized his strength as a shooter.  He's an exceptional shooter.  And as his results imply, he's an exceptional scorer.  But what I like best about him is his confidence and moxie.  If its crunch time, he's taking the shot.  He has kicked the snot out of just about every other 2 guard in the country this summer, he does better in high profile matchups than normal cases.  He's a big time recruit imo, with a big time attitude.  He's the perfect college shooting guard recruit and if he stays healthy will wind up very high on IU's all time scoring list.  And he's going to knock in those big shots to win big games.

Great write-up and post JV. I also expect a sharp rise for JB in the rankings at the end of the summer. sometimes I think these kids that commit early get a bit of the short end of the stick in recruiting circles because there just isn't as much media swirl surrounding them. I think he's primed for a great senior season and could very well make the McDAA game.

At #25 on the ESPN 100, James is only one notch away from a 5-Star right now.  Reports are that he outplayed JaQuan Lyle and Phil Booth at the Nike Global Challenge.

More good news for us, he's in the ear of Leron Black and Goodluck Okonoboh about joining him at IU.  Here's a recent video with a few highlights and a JB2 interview from the Nike GC by Iowa Elites--it would have been interesting to hear his comments about Trey Lyles, but he was interrupted at an inopportune time.  Nice, well-mannered kid:

I got a chance to talk with him after a sectional game last season and he is a very down-to-earth young man. He looked to enjoy signing all of the kids things and was conversing with a lot of people.

He has to be a Burger Boy. If he leads Indiana in scoring this season, to go along with his outstanding play this summer, it a no brainer. It would be nice to have another elite player join him in the IU class for next year.
Look, I gotta go, my Avatar is calling.

he's playing at an elite level, so he should be considered for an elite team.

"Wow, just WOW!"
