LIVE CHAT THREAD: Let's talk IU Football

I'm here and ready to talk some IU football. What's on your mind?

Let's begin with the defense.

How much better do you think IU will be in the 3-4 as opposed to the 4-3?

And do you really expect a noticeable difference in year one?

I just keep coming back to the fact that new defensive coordinator Brian Knorr is technically playing a 3-4 with kids that were recruited to play a 4-3.

Is it that big of a deal? What do you think?

I think it suits the group a lot better. Bobby Richardson is the perfect fit to move over to a 3-4 DE as opposed to a DT, and Nick Mangeri will thrive as the "Bandit" LB. I think the switch makes a lot of sense, and we are going to see guys flying to the football this season instead of sitting back and waiting for something to happen.

The other thought is that with all of the spread offenses you see any way, defenses are in nickel so much that it doesn't really matter. As Buck Suhr points out today in our The Buck Stops Here feature, when you're in nickel you're basically in a 4-2-5 any way so is this a lot of fuss about nothing?

Perhaps, but I still wonder why something that seems that elementary wasn't able to be done in the old system. IU's defense has been bad for a LONG TIME. It's not like this was something that snuck up on them. It just seems to be if it was this easy, it could have been done a long time ago.

I am concerned about the weight loss of TJ Simmons,  226 lbs is small for linebacker these days.  Do you know why he lost so much weight from last year?

Feel free to weigh in on any topics as we go along.

My next question is this: What freshmen do you think makes the biggest immediate impact on defense?

Tegray Scales, Mike Barwick, Nigel Sykes, Greg Gooch, Kiante Walton, Dameon Willis, Robert McCray III or someone else.

Re: LIVE CHAT THREAD: Let's talk IU Football

That's a good point. But it seems like Brian Knorr has these guys believing in themselves, which is a huge part of the battle. It may not even need to matter what system we are running, but the system switch has these guys thinking they can be considerably better. Richardson told me Monday at availability that they don't want to give up more than 21 points to any opponent. While I will need to see it before I'm willing to believe that can happen, it says something about the confidence that these guys have in themselves and in coach Knorr.

I'm here guys. I thought we'd do it on the Free Basketball Board so I've been twiddling my thumbs over there.

I'm not sure that he did. What did he play at last year? In last year's media guide, it had him listed at 229. I can try to find something from later in the year and check that. He doesn't look a lot skinnier or anything, at least to me.

Greg Gooch.  He looks physically ready to play in the Big 10

I'm guessing it was a popular item on the Basketball Board was it?

I like Gooch, too. I've been hearing so much about Tegray Scales though from long before he came to Indiana. Scout analyst Dave Berk was really high on Tegray and thought he was a huge get for IU. He's someone I'm really looking forward to seeing play.

I agree, Gooch looks physically ready and we could see something out of him this season. I like Tegray Scales a lot, and I know Coach Wilson really likes Tegray. The talent is there, he does need to get a little bigger before he's an every down player though

Re: LIVE CHAT THREAD: Let's talk IU Football

When you look at this week's depth chart on defense, the two true freshmen that show up in the two-deep are Tony Fields behind Antonio Allen at Free Safety and Kiante Walton behind Mark Murphy at strong safety.

I still think we'll see some true freshmen playing at linebacker, too.

Re: LIVE CHAT THREAD: Let's talk IU Football

Several sites listed him anywhere from 235 to 240 lbs.  Of course you can't always trust what you see on the internet.  In any event even if he was truly 230 lbs last year I would have like to see him beef up instead of slim down.  Running an effective 3 - 4 defense requires good sized linebackers.

Let's switch to the offense for a minute ...

Tevin Coleman had 169 yards rushing on 14 carries against Indiana State last year.

How big of a game do you think he'll have this time around?

Re: LIVE CHAT THREAD: Let's talk IU Football

Here's a question to ponder before I have to run out of here: How many points per game will the IU defense give up this season? If it's under 25, I think IU wins 7 games. If it's over 227 or 28, it'll be fringe bowl game. We'll see. Share your thoughts.
