Looks like any QB controversy is over

Roberson Transfers:  Link

I
didn't see that one coming.  Would love to have been a fly on the wall in that conversation.

That sucks. Good player and only going to get better. Any ideas as to where he will go?

This is shocking and troubling.   I don't understand the decision and I'm baffled by the timing - - long after the conclusion of spring ball and only seven weeks before the start of fall practice.  This is a big loss for the IU football program.

Timing isn't that baffling in a couple of regards.  Since he would have to sit out a year, it allows him to get to a new school before practice starts for real.  Also it probably allowed him to get through the first summer session and get another class or two under his belt, which could make it easier to transfer and still graduate on time.

I am just surprised he is willing to give up a year of eligibility.

Re: Looks like any QB controversy is over

There is something way more to the story.  This is not about Tre losing the starting job to Nate, or thinking he will - that is just idiotic.  And to say the timing isn't awful - well, yes it is.  He just went through spring practice and now says he will transfer?  Like I said, there is WAY more to the story.  We go from having 3 good QB's to now, just one.  And the one may or may not have been the best of the 3 (all the homers posting how Tre was a backup - would say the same thing about Nate if he was the one to leave)…..this is not good.  I was excited about this year, but now not so much.  This is IU football.  We don't have good luck with injuries.  Sudfeld, who I think is really good, will not last the year.  Why?  Because we have no backup and we have never caught a break.  Just how it is.

Re: Looks like any QB controversy is over

Preparing a defensive scheme against the IU offense just got a bit easier.

Defenses had to prepare for both Sudfeld and Roberson last year.  They now will only have to focus on one style, that of Sudfeld's.  I'm not a fan of platooning QB's, but it seemed to work for IU.

IU has a prolific offense, and I expect that to continue in 2014.  Sudfeld will put up gaudy numbers throwing, it's his durability that will come into question.  The Roberson, Sudfeld combination greatly reduced the concern of what would happen if one went down.  This season that won't be the case.  If Sudfeld goes down then IU is left with an inexperienced QB throwing to a group of relatively inexperienced receivers.  Not a good combination.

I had IU going bowling in 2014 because of what I believe will be an improved defense to complement their high powered offense.  I still believe IU has the ability to make a bowl, however their margin of error just got smaller.

IU is now only one hit away from having a promising season turn into a disaster.  MSU is in the same boat if the lose Cook.

Good luck and here's to the front five keeping both our QB's upright.

Re: Looks like any QB controversy is over

Roberson tweeted yesterday that he's heading to Illinois State.  He will no doubt put up huge numbers, and all the best to him.

I'm over my initial shock and am trying to find a silver lining in the transfer.  As others have noted, we should be fine as long as Nate stays healthy.  We've already seen how good he can be, and he should shine even more without the uncertainty that the dual quarterback situation created. He's experienced, familiar with hostile environments, and has next level attributes.  This could be a monster season for him, even without Cody and some of our other offensive weapons.  Further, with the QB situation resolved, the offense has the clarity that had been lacking the past few seasons.  I still believe we'll go bowling as long as the D can make some stops.

Tough loss.  I think Tre was tired of splitting time.  He is a very competitive kid from what I gather and if CKW was never going to let him "win" the job outright, maybe that plays into the decision.  Sticking with my bowl or bust attitude even without Tre.

Re: Looks like any QB controversy is over

There's no way that Tre's transfer isn't a big loss for Indiana, but he's decided to move on and life will go on at Indiana.

The curious timing of his departure and the lack of details emerging still at this late date leaves lots of room for speculation, though.  You'd have to think that Sudfeld's performance year-to-date had convinced Tre that his hopes of winning the starting job outright were dim.  Zander Diamont, being a pocket passer and a true freshman, would not be a threat to Tre's position as dual-threat option 1a, so it could have been just about splitting time....

Or did Tommy Mister possibly show something in his brief time this spring to make Tre think there might be more competition for the running QB or wildcat role also?  Tommy has reportedly put up a sub 4.5 forty, which is better than Tre's best, and he can throw the ball some, too.  The Chicago Catholic League is no cakewalk, and Mister led his St. Rita's team to victory in the Chicago Prep Bowl.  Hmmm.  Here's a look from ESPN:

MVC actually plays pretty good football. Hopefully, he has some weapons and a good Oline.

Re: Looks like any QB controversy is over

I liked both Hoosier quarterbacks. I thought that switching them seemed to always provide some sort of spark, maybe because opposing defenses would go through an adjustment period.

But frankly, I would have thought that Roberson would go to a higher level than Illinois State. I'll guess that means he already took a redshirt and so the transfer would have cost him a year of eligibility. But if he'd never before redshirted, then he could have gone to one of the better MAC schools, still started, and faced much better competition than he will at Illinois State.

Looks like Cam Cameron's son is joining the Hoosiers. Another QB in the fold.
Look, I gotta go, my Avatar is calling.
