Feelings about this season and going forward

Feelings about this season and going forward

This season can be summed up in one word for me and that's frustrating. To lose our number one QB so early in the season was a sign of things to come. Even though the two new QB's on the roster came in and performed adequately, IU still lost a ton of it's potential punching power the day Tre went down at UMASS.

Then we have the three losses to Ball St., MSU and Navy that are again, frustrating BUT what's scary here is that this wouldn't be Indiana football if they didn't lose those games. My opinion on the Ball State game is that Indiana needs to avoid them, IU's their super bowl and they've got a better coach. The Navy game we simply didn't execute properly on offense, Coffman really struggled that day. The MSU game is on the coaches, not playing Sudfeld in the second half when our offense went stone cold is bad coaching at it's core. Squandering a 17-0 lead is inexceptable too but Litrell's playcalling allowed MSU to come roaring back, I thought Litrell puckered up big time. In short, IU left THREE WINS on the field this year and that's frustrating.

I'm looking forward to next season though, that's the best thing we've got going right now. Most longtime fans and followers know that next year is IU's best chance in a LONG time to finally gain some traction in the BIG. With the return of Tre Roberson at QB and another year in the weight room for the entire program, IU looks to have a really nice squad next year. Wilson is working extremely hard to develop a winning program and I get the feeling he's working harder than any other coach I can remember. I'm not into all that POTFB jazz, let's just get the W up there, bring the Bucket back to Btown and go into winter conditioning doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to get to the top of the BIG next year.

Totally agree if we can get some quality players on defense and all those freshmen and sophmores continue to improve we will have something to be excited about going forward, also i am so glad we have Kevin Wilson as our coach he will get it done.

Welcome to the board, Porter9.

Larry Black and Adam Replogle are going to leave big holes in the defensive line.  Darius Latham would be a big step forward in that department, but no news to report yet on his decision.

Coach Wilson said in his post-game presser that the game could easily have turned out better for us with a few plays--missed kicks, dropped passes, poor throws.  My biggest gripe was not playing Sudfeld--but the concussion explained that.

We have plenty of reasons to expect better things going forward.  One very much better thing would be a victory at Ross-Ade next Saturday.

Mixed feelings. Overall, I feel positive moving forward as the progress as ovbious and significant. By that same token, I share the OP's frustration at some that got away that didn't necessarily have to. The MSU game was particularly galling to me, as it was obvious they'd figured out what we were doing offensively, and we seemingly had absolutely no "Plan B". The last couple weeks waere also a bit of a reality check, as we're simply going to have to upgrade the athletes on the defensive side of the ball to take that next step.

Eagles/Indiana/Mets/Villanova: it's a long story

Still trying to figure out if IU greatly improved or was the B10 just a bad overall conference this year? Iowa and Illinois are god awful, and while Ohio State is undefeated, I am not sure if they pass the eye test. Did any B10 team have what would be considered a marquee type win against an out of conference opponent. MSU has really fallen off the charts this year.

Saw some positives in the coaching, but too often the same old terrible coaching decisions bit the team in the rear. Defense could still be a problem next year. JC players do not always project as starters.

Next year will hopefully be the year IU can achieve to a higher level, a level most IU fans will consider a success.

My problem with this year is the lost opportunities. I keep reading how improved we are over last year because we only won one single game last year. My theory on last year is we actually should've been at least a three or four win ballclub. Bad coaching, bad QB play and bad defense were major problems last year but we still should've beaten teams like Virginia, North Texas and Ball State.

For Indiana to ever move forward and take the next step over the proverbial hump, Indiana MUST take advantage of opportunities to win games. The Ball State, Michigan State and Navy game all come to mind from this season. Indiana was in the driver's seat to WIN those games and came away with a 0-3 record in all three contests.

Coaching decisions must get better quickly, not playing Sudfeld in the second half against MSU is unforgiveable and doomed IU in that game. Bad defensive coaching in particular doomed IU at NU this year...next year will tell the tale on Kevin Wilson IMO. He's got some super opportunities with the schedule as it is, it's time he wins more than he loses.

The close losses were painful but I look at it as part of the growing process.  We did finally close out against Iowa and Illinois.  Next season, I want to see us close consistently and get bowl eligible.  With our schedule set up the way it is, I see no reason to miss a bowl in 2013.

Re: Feelings about this season and going forward

I agree about 2013, most loyal football followers have all pointed to the 13' season as the breakout year for Indiana football. Put another way, if it doesn't happen next year, will it ever happen??

I like the way Wilson is developing the program through lots of hardwork and attitude adjustments. Changing IU's football mindset is a job worthy of a long term contract in itself. The fans and students have always expected the worse and usually that's what's transpired, changing that isn't easy. Wilson had some golden chances this year and they slipped through his hands, next season, that simply can't happen.

Let me also say this, the team has looked tired these last two weeks, I mean worn out. The PSU game you could really tell the defense was just shot, they were bouncing off of ballcarriers. Hopefully they've got enough gas in the tank to win up at Purdue.

I fear next year will be another growing period.   We lose the key clogs on the defensive line, and Latham or not, that position is going to issue next year.

We do have some talented recruits coming in, but counting on them to come in and play right away  and play well is unrealistic.   Yes they are more athletic that what we have, but experience counts quite a bit.

I have a feeling we will lose some games early on that will cost us a bowl in the long run.   BUT 2014 could be special.

I don't agree about next year not being the year, it's gotta be next year. The schedule is looking friendly with a zillion home games and we're getting Tre back. Couple those facts with a team that's a year older and it looks fairly bright. IU's offense should be quite a bit better next year, that fact alone should improve our record.

If IU doesn't get the job done next year, I'm not sure if it will ever get over the hump. This fanbase has to quit with the excuses and quit with the "oh next year" crap. I've followed IU for a long time and the "oh next year" crowd has been wrong the past two decades running. This fanbase needs to start demanding a winner NOW, not two years from now.
