QB race next year

QB race next year

I think Sudfeld and Coffman have done a remarkable job filling in for Tre, but I just haven't seen either one display enough to pass Tre on the QB chart. When Tre's back to health, I feel like he's the man. These two kids are getting much needed reps and valuable time behind center this year with Tre out but I haven't seen enough to remotely think either could beat out Tre next year.

This goes without mentioning we would probably be sporting a 6-3 or 7-2 record if Tre's still the starter...he's elusiveness kills college defenses.

I think it's only a matter of time before CKW asks you to be his most trusted adviser, after all, you have been spot on with your evaluation of the defensive coaches and your suggestions on who should start at qb this year.

We do lead the Big Ten in passing.  Hard to discount that.  Tre is exciting and started the season well but honestly he doesn't have much game action on his resume to conclude him as being the "the guy".  Last year he was a huge upgrade over the gawd awful QB play of EWB but his passing numbers were pretty poor....just looked good compared to EWB.

I honestly think it is wide open and I actually like all three of them.  Throw in the fact they are all underclassmen and still developing at a rapid pace along with Tre's injury and every single one of them could end up #1 or #3 on the depth chart next year.  Nothing would surprise me.

With Wilson, it's always wide open, especially this far away from next season.

If I was a betting man, I'd go with Tre earning his starting spot back.

Gotta agree here.

There's a reason we've been successful the last two weeks.  QB play isn't the reason.  A solid defense has been getting the job done.  Without a doubt, they're the reason we're winning now.

If Tre returns to form next year, any chance Sudfeld redshirts?

I'm thinking the same.  Tre's running ability gives the offense a dimension it doesn't have with the other two.  Defenses either have to shadow him, or leave themselves vulnerable to his scrambling.  This depends, of course, on how he comes back from a bad injury.  If he's not 100% and can't run with the same effectiveness, we have better arms in Coffman and Sudfeld.

Expect Coach Wilson to play them off one against the other in the off-season and in training, to get them to work.  It's great to have competition, and they all have shown they have talent to develop.

That would be a surprise, at least to me at this point.  We're not showing any commits at the QB position for next year, nor any high-ranking prospects at this point.  We'll need three QB's active, especially if Tre comes back to form and scrambles the way he can.

It's still possible that we sign another QB for next year, but that guy would be the logical target to redshirt, not Sudfeld IMO.

a redshirt can be burned at any time so not really an issue to attempt to redshirt someone and burn if it the need arises.

Re: QB race next year

I'm not so sure after the experience these two QB's are getting this season that Tre will be "the guy" next year. These guys are getting a better feel for the speed and talent on this level and both appear to be better passing QB's. Given this is more of a passing type offense they may have the edge. Also, while not running QB's these two have shown they can extend a play with their scrambling, a trait required on numerous occasions. The fact the O-line is quite young (aside from Matte), they (the O-Line)  should also be better next year, so scrambling may not be required as frequently. I am not of the opinion either that we would have a significantly better record if Tre were playing. Its been, of all things, the D playing better that has allowed us to win. (And yes, I recognize the last two teams have not been offensive juggernauts.) Just my opinion.

None the less, having all three back and competing and pushing each other will hopefully help bring up their level of play. Last note, I like the way Sudfeld and Coffman appear to be talking while on the sidelines. It shows a good team atmosphere... I hope.
