Sour Grapes or just a Whiner?

Sour Grapes or just a Whiner?

* Bobby Petrino says he’s changed. But in reporting a story about the new Louisville coach that is in SI’s college football preview, it appears Petrino is still just as difficult to work and play for. Sources with ties to the Cardinals’ football program and Petrino said there’s significant friction between Petrino and feisty defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. The two have repeatedly feuded often since Grantham’s hiring in January.

So much that one source insists Petrino would have already gotten rid of Grantham if not for his guaranteed five-year contract that pays him nearly $1 million annually. He came to Louisville after four seasons as Georgia’s defensive coordinator. “He’s stuck with him,” a source said.

There’s also still lingering dissension among players about Petrino’s arrival. Some were so unhappy with Petrino’s frigid, explihttp://mbd.scout.com/themes/scout2/post.aspx? s=17&f=2759cit demeanor that they considered leaving early for the NFL’s supplemental draft in June according to one source.

“He’s a mean guy,” said Jamaine Brooks, a former Louisville defensive tackle who left this past spring. “He cusses you out. You’re never doing enough. He’s still Bobby Mother------- Petrino.”

Brooks initially supported Petrino’s hiring, which he quickly came to regret. “The way he came in doing business I didn’t like it,” Brooks said. “The way he treated people. He just wasn’t a good coach.”

Wouldn't that be two of the same thing?

For Jamaine Brooks to say that Petrino is not a good coach is total garbage. He's a proven winner that gets guys (offense and defense) to the NFL.

Brooks was barely hanging onto staying in this program even udner Charlie.  He's BFF with Chane if you want to draw any conclusions.

Yep I've heard there's two camps within the team concerning Bobby. No more tuck-ins from Uncle Chuckles.

That was some kind of hatchet job piece by SI. Pretty weak.

Everything I have heard from former players about Petrino is he is a hardass, but he makes sure everything is perfect. The way he teaches to study, play, and focus are second-to-none, but don't expect Faith to be the first of his three F's

Yeah, because we all saw how nice guy coaches work out... ones that have book clubs and are your buddy.

Does it surprise anybody that all the players don't like Petrino?  He is a drill sergeant compared to the father figure that Strong was.  Not everybody is going to like it.   Neither way is necessarily wrong though.  It is kind of funny though that people are telling Brooks to shut up while everybody was jumping for joy whenever any players criticized Strong.   There is some truth and a lot of sour grapes by the players' comments in both cases.

I'm truly sorry for the players who were used to the coaching atmosphere with Strong and assistants. I know I couldn't handle working/playing for BP if he's anything like what I heard before, however, I'm a chick, and can tend to be sensitive. Grantham... I just hope he's good if we've got him, regardless. And lastly: anybody here think Bobby would suddenly NOT be a d!ck? And you're also sure he'll stay forever? Hell of a football coach. Just win while you're here, Bobby.

If he is mean or whatever, maybe that's part of what makes him such a good coach? The day he loses that and everyone loves him might be the day he has to retire, because he won't be winning as many games anymore.

I wonder why SI didn't get an interview with Garrick McGee and ask him why on earth he'd leave a head coaching job to come work for such a terrible boss as Petrino? In fact, I wonder why almost the entire coaching staff FOLLOWED Petrino here after having worked with him previously?

I also wonder why SI didn't include quotes such as Harry Douglas' who recently said (after playing for Petrino) that he was the best possible hire UofL could have made?

Agenda? Nah. Couldn't be an agenda.

No more satisfaction of 24-17 wins over the Memphis type teams. Brooks made the right choice if he didn't want to work his butt off everyday.

The more I hear about how BP is still a tyrannical a-hole, the more comforted I am that any change that has occurred has not affected his coaching intensity and demeanor. Players that want to win and get better embrace it. Soft players like Jamaine Brooks who can't hack it leave. Where is the down side?

Isn't it strange we've read so many positive reviews about Coach Petrino from the players currently on the team and practicing every day versus these comments from one player who quit the team?

This writer has "sources" feeding him all these negatives. I've got sources giving nothing but positives.  There's probably dozens of guys on this board who get more inside information on what's happening around our football program than this one writer who spends about ten minutes a year seeking information on the Cards' athletics.

I'd like to add that I couldn't be any more excited to have BP back, and hope he does stay forever. I'm just not betting the farm on it. And players who are 'delicate flowers' clearly need to move on. 14 days!! GO CARDS!!

I don't really believe all that. The guy was 41-9 here and then had 2 straight double digit winning years in the SEC. If you're truly that hated by players, they tend to tune you out and the team sucks. They usually don't win at record clips.

The only thing that I hope isn't true is friction between him and Grantham. That would probably be a train wreck.

Re: Sour Grapes or just a Whiner?

I can certainly believe two passionate coaches feuding, but to say players 'hate' him is a broad generalization.  There are probably some players who hate him, point and case Jamaine Brooks who got sent packing.  I had high hopes for that kid, but apparently he had different high hopes for himself.

All puns aside, if you talk to any former players of CBP, they like him and respect him.  They may have thought he was a gigantic a hole or a flaming d bag at the time, but they understand how his perfectionist mentality and coaching made them better.  Not just as players, but also in their overall work ethic and as individuals.

Re: Sour Grapes or just a Whiner?

Some of my best coaches were @ssholes. I have no problem with CBP being a hard case. I'll admit that it might cost us a talented recruit from time to time who doesn't like being yelled at but you can't argue with Bobby's result so far in his career.

And CardsLady, did you read the Adelson article? Bobby Petrino desperately wanted to come back home to Louisville. I'll make you a friendly wager with an over/under of 7 years. Ill confidently take the over!

College coach cusses at player and tries to get the player to do more. Wow that's new, Bad Bobby.

As for coaches arguing. I draw this comparison, Lennon and McCartney, Joe Perry and Steven Tyler. Let's make some hits!

As hit pieces go they were reaching.
