Guilty pleasure college football teams...

Which school have you always enjoyed following but have no affiliation with and there's really no logical explanation as to why you keep an eye on its football teams?

Any team that you're the only one in your family or circle of friends that pulls for it?devil

For me, Mississippi State is one I've always had a soft spot for. I guess because they're downtrodden and get pushed around in their league so much. When the offensive guru from Florida, Dan Mullen, took over I was hoping they would become really competitive. Not so much. I still tune in when they're playing and I'd love them to win the SEC West in my lifetime (I'm 35 so I don't know if I have that much time left or nottongue)...

Also, Boston College. I want them to win as much as I want to actually meet one of their fans! I don't know why. Makes no sense to me (I've never even been to Boston before)...

Illinois. If any team had to win the God forsaken B1G, I wish the Fighting Illini would. I couldn't tell you why I've kept up with them, especially when Ron Zook took over, because it's been some dismal football outings for a long time there for sure.

Oregon State. I love watching the Beaverswink. I pull for them in the PAC and against their big brother in Eugene. Granted, I don't get to watch much of them being they're on so late here in the East but I am enamored of the culture/landscape in the Pacific Northwest so they're like an adopted school from afar for me I suppose. Washington State is another now with Mike Leach at the helm that I find myself keeping up with in that geographic region.

Finally, TCU. Is it the purple? The horned frog mascot? One of the few Texas teams I can stomach? Don't know the attraction here either but I always find myself watching their games when they are on...

Okay, I've confessed my sins, now which teams are your guilty pleasures?

[This thread is a by-product of not having any sports to follow in this void of collegiate baseball, football, and basketball time of year]

I would say Michigan, but I do have an affiliation there, so I guess that doesn't count.

For someone I have zero affiliation with I'd guess I'd say Boise State (but there is a logical reason), because they were much like us managing to succeed despite all of the disadvantages working against them.  Find it hard not to root for them every time I watch one of their games.  Also, their fans were high class when we played them.

The only non-logical team I follow is the Chicago Cubs...I must be a masochist deep down for that.

Boise State, the original BCS buster, is definitely one I'd put on my list, too. I go back to when Dan Hawkins was there coaching, and the disappointment I felt when he bolted for Colorado, as the time I started keeping up with the blue field Broncos. Now that Chris Petersen is gone to Washington, I wonder if they will be able to sustain national momentum or merely fade into the Mountain West background...

IU.  You just can't help but feel sorry for them in football.

Re: Guilty pleasure college football teams...

I too cheer for Mississippi State. We made the trip down to Starkville in '09 (the year we were actually good) when GT beat MSU pretty easily. The MSU fans were awesome. They treated us like family. I was so embarrassed at the end of the game when a group of GT fans in their 20's and 30's were slinging water on the Miss St. fans as they left. I was humiliated. We had to assure the other MSU fans that not all GT fans were like that. I guess I have liked them ever since.

Clemson/Duke- I put these two together because I cheer for them for the same reason. I love Dabo and Coach Cut. They are great men. GT would be lucky to have a coach like that. I can't stand Paul Johnson.

I actually went to the Clemson/LSU CFA Bowl back in 2012. (What an awesome game!) That game was a few hours after GT had beat USCw in the Sun Bowl, so I had my GT gear on. All of the Clemson fans (and LSU fans), yelled at my dad and I, asking us if we had won. When we replied yes, they acted all excited. That might be because nobody liked Lane Kiffin. Still, Clemson fans are awesome!

I also went to the Duke/A&M CFA Bowl. It was good at first, but Johnny Manziel showed up in the 2nd half. It was a great experience though. The Duke fans were awesome, and the A&M band was OUTSTANDING! I will always consider Duke my T-2nd favorite team (along with Clemson). Don't tell the people on the GT board! biggrin

My dad said that until 2005, that he used to actually cheer for Georgia. I think less of him for that. He said they didn't used to be as rude and stupid, and actually didn't beat us all the time. I can't imagine. I will NEVER, EVER pull for Georgia, even if they were playing VT.

Georgia to Georgia Tech is the same as UK to Louisville. (or WVU?)

Michigan State.  Even before I knew to hate Kentucky, I hated Michigan and Ohio State. It seemed natural to become a fan of Michigan State.

Re: Guilty pleasure college football teams...

Florida State - Just liked their Unis, while I was in High School. Louisville was still evolving under The Pipe, and while I always loved my CARDS, it seemed we were a million miles away from FSU. I follow LSU and Texas Tech too, but that is due to my mother and father being alums.

I am as much of a Niners fan as I am a CARDS fan. Never been to California and never seen a Niners game in person. But I hated 2 teams growing up. The Cowboys And the Bengals. After Montana beat the Cowboys in the Catch game and then beat the Bengals in their first Super Bowl, I was sold. I have a framed and autographed Montana Jersey in my man cave. Have Several Montana Rookie cards, as well as Rice's, Lott's, Craig's, Young's, Ted Washington's, and many other famous Niners.

Dang, Chewie, I'd forgotten you were a big Niners fan. Friend of mine built Montana's house, lol. Some good stories around it, mostly including what a good guy and regular stiff Joe is. He's a really fun man with a sense of humor. Crazy about his kids. I also hate the Rams - from back in those days - along with the CowPersons. Now the big deal are the Seahawks, of course. I sure never saw that coming, lol.

For me it's Boise State. I'd hate for us to somehow purposefully forget about them. They traveled along with us as college football outliers and we very nearly made it into a wildly impractical conference together. I sort of keep a stubborn candle burning for the Bronco's.

Then I heart Nevada, because I lived there and they often come up with very legit teams. For 5-6 years, no college in America had produced more major league ballplayers. Watching them in baseball was always a treat.

Majoe College-wise, I back Kansas State and FSU. I remember when FSU seemed more like a force of nature than a football team.

For me it would be Florida State and LSU. I grew up in the heyday
of the FSU climb to the top, back when they were scheduling "anybody,
anywhere, anytime". The Noles were always on tv and I made it a
point to watch them. I still have a soft spot for them and consider the
trip I took to Doak one of the coolest sporting events I have ever
attended (even though they kicked the hell out if us).

My other distant follow is LSU. I always liked the unis and the pure
passion that surrounds LSU football.

I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and am two years younger than Joe Montana.  His high school (Ringgold) used to be in the same league as mine (Uniontown) during the early Seventies.

Joe was a skinny 6'1" small forward.  He was actually a pretty damn good basketball player.  When Ringgold played Uniontown, he was guarded by a guy on our team you may have heard about, a guy named Chuck Muncie.

I was 16 and an ND fan when Joe Montana went there.  So, I became a fan of his.  I met him a few times back home for ND functions (lots of ND fans in Western Pa.).  He was  always very friendly and polite.  I have an old photo of he and I standing together at some dinner.

Anyway, Joe has always been a pretty classy guy.  I hear he had a pretty good career after he left ND.   :)

Most schools while our ex-coaches are there.   Michigan State, Arkansas and WKU.  This year I'll be a Texas fan.

Re: Guilty pleasure college football teams...

I like Ohio State and Alabama. Many of my family members are OSU fans, and I share their distaste for Michigan. I have been to Alabama several times over the years, and I just like the state and it's culture. I like Auburn as well. Clemson is another team I enjoy seeing do well, and I have no explanation for that. Never been to campus and don't know much about the school. That will change.

UNC football. Love it when a "basketball school" does well in football.

I also like Penn State, but the Sandusky fiasco erased a lot of PSU's luster.

How can anyone not respect and admire Boise State? Talk about doing more with less.

lately I have been spending a lot of time in California, and the local sports scene is starting to grow on me, but mostly the professional teams. Love the Clips, Kings, and Giants.

Re: Guilty pleasure college football teams...

I'll watch nearly any college football, but outside of the Cards there's three teams that I'll preference if the Cards aren't playing...

1)Michigan: My cousin went there and is a big Wolverines fan so I like seeing them do well because her and I are close.
2)WKU: In state school, up and coming and putting forth a growing effort in football, and I've got family there.
3)Florida: I've got a lot of friends down in Florida that're Gators fans, so I always try and catch 'em on if the Cards aren't playing. Having said that, it was also really really awesome pounding them in the Sugar Bowl.

Hatters gon' hat.

Air Force.  Back in the 60's and 70's I lived in Denver and dad took me to several of their games.  Loved the fly-overs, especially the game that had a B-52 scrape the stadium.
