you've gotta try to land these kids but with what Blakeney said tonight, you're pretty much fighting a losing battle. Talking about Slimy he says, "He puts his players into the NBA and right now that is my main goal", Blakeney said tonight. THAT is the main mindset of these kids, as much as it is total bs. These kids actually think Cal coaches them up into the league. You can't win that battle. These kids are already brainwashed. By the sounds of what he says, he'll more than likely go to UK. Seen this scenario enough? noidea

What may be being said in interviews vs stuff that is going on behind the scenes is two different things.

I'm not sure he has a commit-able offer from them yet. He is plan B.

I agree that it very well could be a Teague/Lyles-esque situation but from everything I've heard we are still standing in good position with his recruitment. You still recruit him to be a Card and by no means should coach throw in the towel because fat cow is involved.

UK doesn't look as attractive right now without the guaranteed PT he wants.

Personally I think he loves the attention from all the national media and elite schools but he loves Louisville and Rick more and that will win out.

Before this season Randle was projected as the #2 pick but after a year under Pay Pal he was the 7th pick and the Harrison twins were projected as  lottery picks but after this year they were not projected to be lottery picks so they came back for their sophomore year.noidea

Re: You know Post Rating (14 votes)

Here is my thought...
Until Pitino starts putting players in the NBA at the rate that he did when he was at UK between 95-97 (I will also include the 4 or 5 guys that ended up on Tubby's first title team), he is going to lose a LOT of recruiting battles to Cal...   I KNOW we have a lot to offer, but we need to bank on the Twins being like Doron Lamb... who made it into the NBA, but was drafted in the 2nd round...  And we need Pitino to put some more players into the NBA.
Wayne Blackshear was an NBA player 3 years ago. He has spent 2 years in a virtual wasteland... as a former top 10 player, and top 30 player player out of HS, and McDAA, the dude along with Samuels, who left early, are basically putting Pitino in a bad position.
I honestly feel like, with the Talent Pitino has stockpiled over the last 3 years, that we will win 30 games next year... hands down.
AS I argued with a UK fan that I know, This is the first year, that our 2 deep contains 4-star or better players... Agau is the only consensus NON-4 star player... Anas and Stockman were 4-stars on other sites... and look at what Pitino did with plodding slow Mangok. (See edit below)  If Mangok explodes, and Rozier gets drafted in the 1st round... I believe we will start winning some of the recruiting battles...

EDITED BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE UNDERLINED\BOLDED STATEMENT ABOVE:

OK... sorry guys... let me make my statement clear...
Look at Mangok's tapes from HS...
Notice how slowly he gets up and down the court... that is what I meant by "Plodding"...

My "Look at what Pitino did with plodding slow Mangok" statement was meant to be a statement that shows how Pitino transformed an average "I am 6-10, I can block the shots from a 5'9" guy" shot blocker into an explosive athlete who is a consistent Jump shot away from getting drafted...
When M&M committed, every one of us on these boards looked around and were like "HUH, WHAT?"

We've got a lottery pick and an All American in the person of Trez - playing for us now. Asking Rozier to be that quality of player this season seems like an unfair burden. I am not a fan of expecting that from Terry. Trez has put in the minutes, knows the game better and has a unique set of skills, a la Russ and Gorgui. I would hope we let TeRo develop at his pace and see where that leads.

I am personally uncomfortable with expecting so much. Trez? He can handle the weight.

Why panic because a recruit says something positive about UK?  Every player Cal recruits does not sign with UK.  I think some of us are starting to develop an inferiority complex like we're nothing but a "little brother".  We've been to two final fours the last three years and won a national championship.  With Trez, this will be three straight years we've sent players to the NBA and it might be multiple players again this year.  You don't have to be a burger boy to get into the NBA playing for our coach.

Damn right.

There's nothing to get all worked up about... Except The Cards.  Because let's face it, they're The Cards.

I can't say that every recruit that signs with Cal is foolish.  I just think they are doing themselves an injustice.

I keep old Hendo on Ignore. Plodding slow Mango. I think I got Hendo right where he belongs.

Cal puts players into the NBA? Newsflash: the players he's putting in, perhaps with the exception of Josh Harrelson, were NBA ready before they got to UK. That certainly helps him get them in. Poythress and WCS? Not as much. The twins? Not as much. Marcus Lee and Dakari Johnson? Not as much.

I really would love to see Blakenly here. If he'd rather be at UK, so be it. If that happens, hopefully Coach P will find us the next Russ Smith and Gorgui Dieng instead.
ACC, ready or not, here we come! Old 41-9 is back! Rick Pitino Hall of Fame. What a great time to be a Louisville Cardinal fan!  Go Cards!

Plodding and slow Mangok ??  When he was red shirting Rick said he was one of the fastest guys, end to end, on the team - faster than Gorgui.

You managed to find arguably his best trait and turn it exactly wrong. He runs like a deer and is very agile. You want to argue other elements of his game fine but what in the world are you watching to come up with that conclusion?

Re: You know Post Rating (13 votes)

Tell me something  "ole New  York Card"...
How many "NBA ready" players has Pitino not only placed in the NBA,  but also had drafted in the Lottery?
I mean, facts is facts...

Pitino loves developing players in 3-4 years (lilke Earl Clark and T-will, FYI, one of those guys was possibly NBA ready out of HS).
Pitino has aleft a trail of 5-star players who have spent 3-4 summers in his program (Transfer David Padgett, DC, Terrence Jennings, [so far] Blackshear, Palacios, and Mr. #1 himself, Samardo Samuels) and Behanan un-drafted. Not all of this can be blamed on Pitino. But its almost his philosophy is "I am going send you to the NBA in no less than 3 years". Now look at his 4-star talent, like George Good, Swopshire and Buckles, Jenkins, Smith, Sosa, and a host of others who have not sniffed the NBA.

From where I stand, Pitino has had 4.5 guys drafted into the 1st round (Gaines spent 2 years under Crum first) in Dieng, Garcia, Gaines, Clark, and T-will.  Gaines was a top 60 player out of HS, much in the same vein as Siva or, more accurately, Dieng (go read Gaines UofL bio, as there were no star ranking systems out there, back in 2000).  But that is in his entire 12 year stay here. Then you can throw in Smith and Siva... that is 6.5 players... in 12 years...

In today's world, money  talks. If someone told me "I can give you an Ivy League education and assure you of a 6-digit income in 1 year and I have a proven track record, in YOUR chosen profession" ONLY a fool would say "Nah, let me jump on the 4 year education track, which gives ma 50/50 chances of even LANDING a job in my chosen profession, let along making 6-digits". Some of you guys who jump on this L1C4 tip and ignore the OAD are really fooling yourselves with Red-tinted glasses... and that is sad...

Simply put, Pitino needs to produce some 1 n Dones, whether they bea 3-star, a 4-star, or 5-star, he needs to produce some one-n-dones... because that is the NEW trend...  He needs to tailor his system to SUPPORT 1nDones.  This is what your top 20 NON-AFRICAN recruits will tell you, out there on the recruiting trail.

Look at some of the crap Cal is spewing to the recruits and their parents, especially the african-american ones, who, just face it, 90% of them come from a single parent multi-sibling home with a 50% chance of low-income, section 8 housing life style. (I am african american myself, and by the Grace of GOD grew up in a 2-parent christian led home out in the suburbs, but I am an exception and not the norm).
1)  He promises them "Salvation" in the form of riches, and "breaking generation" curses of "Poverty"...  the dude has actually spouted this stuff out to the press and in his book...  I mean, seriously, the dude, comes off as some kind of new-age, basketball Moses, taking his players to the NBA promise land.  His words "We are breaking generational poverty, some of these things we are doing for the kids..."

2) He promises the Euro guys a chance to play with the best, and to get acclimated to the pressures of star dome via the Big Blue fan network... and, once again, instant NBA stardom... Lol... although, if I were Zimmerman, I would take a longggg look and Hood, Wiltjer, and Willis...lol...

YES, I KNOW I SOUND LIKE A UK FAN... GO AHEAD AND 1-star me to death... but if you are going to 1-STAR  me to DEATH (lol, not like it aint already been done before) please USE FACTS... and NOT USELESS CONJECTURE...

Now... for me... when I step back, whose to say that if DC had stayed 2 more years, or if Jennings had stayed 1 more years, or if Samuels had stayed 2 more years, that ANY of those guys would have gotten drafted  in the 1st round, after their senior year... Whose to say? Definitely not me... But I will say this... Two your top 20 recruits who are not really concerned about a 4-year degree... Its a no-brainer, Kansas, UK, Duke, or Baylor.  Even UNC is sort of Struggling on the recruiting trail. When is the last time UNC has had the #1 ranked class? Been a while....

All I am saying is that instead of trying to fight the system, Pitino needs to go with the flow... plain and simple...

You may now proceed with the 1-stars... (ie, the online version of stoning)...
