HELP TOPIC: How to create a username Avatar (picture)

General Information

  • The hardest thing about creating an avatar (picture) for your username is deciding which picture to use.  Thankfully the internet is stocked full of millions of pictures to use, so it's just a matter of hunting down a picture you like and saving it to your computer.    Avatar pictures are restricted to 100x100 pixels in size so keep in mind the following points when selecting a picture:
  1. You can start with any size picture you want, but you will need to crop & resize the picture (instructions on how to do this are contained within this thread)
  2. Because an avatar is relatively small, you'll want to avoid choosing pictures that have a lot going on within them, as you'll lose a lot of detail.
  3. Because you'll be cropping your picture, you can start with a picture that has a lot going on in it, and just crop out a portion (i.e. one player's face can be cropped out of a picture that includes several players)
  4. Keep in mind that this site is family oriented. Avatars with Pornography, explicit language, glorification of alcohol/drugs, etc will not be tolerated, and could result in punishment by the mods.  It's probably a good idea to use the "grandmother" rule: if you choose something you wouldn't show your grandmother, then it's probably not allowed here.

  • If you want an Avatar but feel like formatting a picture is too much of a hassle, you can always use avatars that other people have pre-made (formatted) for you and posted on the internet.  Just do a search for "100x100 pictures" or "100x100 avatars".  The only problem with using pre-made pictures is that there probably isn't a lot of 100x100 ILLINI pictures out there.

  • Not everyone has picture editing software on their computer, or they might not know how to use it to crop and resize pictures.  Rather than put the onus on you to figure out how to find and use software that may have come bundled with your computer and/or digital camera, I've found a very basic software program (PC Only) whose sole function is to crop and resize pictures.  It's very easy to setup and use.  The software is called "Quick JPEG Image Resize and Crop" and can be downloaded for free HERE.  Just go to the website and select "Download Now".  You'll save a copy to your computer, the select the SetUP.exe file to install the program. It's a small program and takes very little time to download and setup.

  • Unfortunately I don't use a Mac so I can't offer a solution on how to crop & resize with a Mac.  I'm sure the software is already on the computer to do so, you'll just have to look for it.

Re: HELP TOPIC: How to add an avatar (picture) to your username

How to Create a Custom Avatar picture

I. Select your Picture
Note: if you don't want to create a custom picture for your avatar, skip to the "Find a pre-made picture for your Avatar" below

1.) Find a picture on the internet or on your computer that you want to use.  You can find pictures on the internet by going to Google.com and doing a search for something then after the search is complete, click "Images" on the left hand side once the screen.

2.) If the picture is located on the internet save it to your computer.  For those familiar on how to do this skip to "Crop your Picture" section, otherwise instructions are as follows:

---2a.) First navigate your web browser to a fullsize picture (i.e. if you did a search for pictures of dogs and a bunch of pictures of dogs show up, then click on one of them to get to the fullsize image).

---2b.) Make sure your web browser isn't maximized (some of your desktop is showing)

---2c.) Place your cursor over the picture you want to use

---2d.) Left Click and hold the left button on your mouse

---2e.) Drag the picture to your desktop and release

OR

You can just use the mouse Right Click dialog box option Select "Save Image as" (or similar text depending upon browser)

II. Crop your Picture

1.) Open the "Quick JPEG Image Resize and Crop" software

2.) Drag and drop (left click mouse button & hold) the picture file from your desktop into the picture area of the software.  Your image will appear in the window.

3.) Move your cursor over the picture

4.) Left click & hold left mouse button.  Drag your cursor diagonally and release button -- a red rectangle will appear which will be your crop area, don't worry about getting it perfect as you can adjust it in a minute.  It should look like this (except the picture and the numbers in the boxes will obviously be different)

5.) You can change the size of crop area by placing your cursor over one of the little red squares and selecting/dragging with your left mouse button

6.) You can move the crop box by placing your cursor in the center of the crop area and left click/dragging around.

7.) Remember, you want to create a SQUARE picture.  To do this easily, once you have the approximate crop size - change either the crop height or width numbers located on the right side of the picture so they match one another.

8.) Once you have the crop size square and located where you want it, select the crop button located under the crop numbers on the right hand side.

9.) Keep the "Quick JPEG Image Resize software" open and go to the "Resize your Picture" section below

III. Resize your Picture

1.) Change the numbers in the lower left hand corner in the custom section to "100" x "100"

2.) Select the large Save as.. button in the upper right hand corner.  Save your new file and give it a unique name -- remember where you saved it as you still need to upload it.

3.) Go to the "Upload your avatar picture" section below

IV. Skip to the "Upload your avatar picture to InsideILLINI.com" section below

Find a pre-made picture for your Avatar

1.) Open your web browser and go to a search engine (i.e. google.com)

2.) Do a search for one of the following "100x100 pictures" or "100x100 avatars"

3.) Look through the websites that come up until you find a picture you want to use.  Remember, you can always go back and change your avatar picture if you find one in the future you like better.

4.) Place your cursor over the picture you want

5.) Right click, and select save as to save the picture to your computer.  It's important that you remember where you save the picture - it's easiest to just save it to your desktop.

6.) skip to the  "Upload your avatar picture to InsideILLINI.com" section below

Upload your avatar picture to InsideILLINI.com

1.) Open your web browser and go to InsideIlline.com -- sign in if you aren't already logged in (upper right hand corner of webpage)

2.) Go to one of the forums within InsideIllini (football, basketball, game, ect)

3.) Select My Menu in right hand corner of top of forum (below advertisement)

4.) Select My Profile

5.) Select Edit your profile now underneath "Member Information"

6.) Under the section "Customize Your Posts" there is an Avatar section.  Select the button that says "change"  -- NOTE: it may say something different as I already have an avatar uploaded.  If you don't already have an avatar uploaded it may say "Upload", "Select",  or something similar.

7.) A small separate window will pop-up  -- Select "Choose File" button

8.) Select your avatar image file that you created in the steps above then Select Open.

9.) This should upload your avatar file -- Happy posting!

NOTE: If you are having problems uploading your picture to InsideILLINI.com and  using a pre-made picture from a website, it's possible that the person who created the picture might not have made it exactly 100 x 100 pixels.  If you are having problems uploading your picture, you can check the avatar picture size by downloading the "Quick JPEG Image Resize and Crop" software located in the "How to Create a Custom Avatar picture" section above
