HELP TOPIC: How to post a Picture

General Information

♦ To post pictures on InsideIllini, they need to be located on the internet as you can't post pictures located on your computer's hard drive.  When you post a picture, you are hotlinking (hyperlinking) an image from another website, as the image is not actually copied onto the InsideIllini website.  If you have pictures on your hard drive that you want to post, you need to upload them to an image hosting website (i.e. Photobucket which is free) then hotlink them from there.  There will be more on image hosting websites later in the thread.

♦ Because you are hotlinking the pictures from another website, unless you are using an image hosting website, there is a possibility that the hosting website may not allow picture hotlinking.  The picture may show up in your posting window before you complete your post, but may disappear after you post it.  Sometimes it takes websites a little time to discover and remove picture hotlinks.  So the picture may initially show up after you post it, but then disappear a day or two later.  You should be able to tell when this occurs, as we've all seen posts containing pictures with broken hotlinks.  Just be aware of this in case your very first time posting a picture, the link doesn't work.

♦ You can post pictures using all web browsers.  The easiest method can only be used on 3 web browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Windows Internet Explorer).  You can not use the easiest method on Safari as it will not work, however there is a method you can use which is described below.

♦ You may resize pictures in posts if you are using Mozilla Firefox & Windows Internet Explorer.   If you are not using those browsers then you will not be able to resize the pictures (unless you use HTML coding, which I'm not going to cover at this point).

♦ Refer to the instructions below corresponding to the web browser that you are using.

How to post a picture using
GOOGLE CHROME
MOZILLA FIREFOX
WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER

I. Copy and Paste Method (Easiest)

1.) Open InsideIllini posting window in your browser.  If you also plan on adding text, it's a good idea to hit return a several times within your posting window so you can easily add text above and/or below the posted picture.

2.) Open website with picture you want to post in another browser tab, or another browser window.

3.) Place your cursor over the picture you wish to post, and right click with your mouse.

4.) Select "Copy Picture" on the dialog box that popped up when you right clicked

5.) Return to InsideIllini posting window, place your cursor within the posting window and right click

6.) Select "Paste" in the dialog box that popped up.  The picture should immediately show up in your posting window.  If it does not, go back to step '2' above.   At this point you can re-size the picture if you are using Firefox or Windows Internet explorer.  See instructions later in thread on how to do so.

7.) Complete your post and select "Post" button

If you are familiar with the copy and paste keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+C = copy  & Ctrl+V= paste), you may substitute them for using the right click method described above.

II. Drag and Drop Method

This is another method you can use which is not quite as easy if you have a smaller monitor.  Basically you open 2 separate browser windows.  One with the posting window, and the other with the picture you want to post.  Place your cursor over over the picture, left click and hold.  Drag the picture into the Inside Illini posting window and then release your left click.  The picture should immediately appear in your posting window.

Note: If you are using Firefox you can drag and drop between tabs.  You can not currently do this with any other browser.   You open the tab with the picture, drag the picture up to the tab of the InsideIllini posting window and pause until the tab opens, then  you drag the picture into the posting window.

SAFARI

I. Drag and Drop Method (Easiest)

1.) Open two separate Safari browser windows

2.) In one browser window, open an InsideIllini posting window, and in the other one, open the picture you wish to post.  It's a good idea in the InsideIllini posting window to hit return a few times if you plan on adding text.

3.)  Arrange the browser windows (move and/or stretch) if they are overlapping so that at least a portion of the InsideIllini posting window visible if beneath the picture browser. A portion of the picture must also be visible.

4.) Place your cursor over the picture, left click your mouse and hold

5.) While holding the left button, drag the picture from one browser to the other and into the InsideIllini posting window

6.) Release left mouse button and picture should immediately appear

7.) Complete your post and select "Post" button

II. Copy and Paste Method

DO NOT USE Copy and Pate Method if you are using Safari, as it will not work.

How to resize a picture using
MOZILLA FIREFOX
WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER

Unfortunately these are currently the only 2 web browsers that allow you resize pictures within your post (unless you use HTML coding).  I usually use Chrome, and if I need to resize a picture after I posted it, I'll open one of these browsers and edit my post to resize them.

1.) Once you have inserted a picture into a post, but before you have actually posted it, click on the image.  You can also do this after you have posted the picture by editing your post and clicking on the picture..

2.) Little grips (squares) appear on the perimeter of the picture at all 4 corners as well as at the middle of each side.   Place your cursor in one of the corner grips, left click your mouse and hold.

3.) Drag the picture grip either smaller (towards picture center) or larger (away from picture center) to resize of the picture.  Please avoid posting huge pictures on the forum as some people are using small monitors and large pictures take up too much of their screen.  Plus the mods will most likely delete your post.

4.) You can repeat resizing the picture as many times as you like until you get the size you want, as some pictures are huge and because the posting window is small, it takes several times to get them to a manageable size.

5.) Complete your post then select "Post" button

6.) Most importantly, after you post, check your posted picture to make sure it appears correctly.  You can always edit your post and resize again as necessary using the same method

Note: Unless you are purposely trying to distort a picture it's advisable to avoid using the grips located on the sides of top/bottom/left/right side of the picture.  When you select the side grips, it changes the aspect ratio of the picture which will result in a stretched or squashed looking picture.  When you use the corner grips it automatically keeps the aspect ratio correct.

Re: HELP TOPIC: How to post a Picture

How to select an Image Hosting Website

After doing a quick google search I found a multitude of websites that offer free image hosting. There isn't enough time in the day for me to review all of them and tell you which ones are the best.  Here is a website that rates the top 10 image so hopefully the information is accurate.  If you have any input on particular image hosting websites, please add your comments to this thread.  I've found that once you get the account set up (just takes a 1-2 minutes) that they are very easy to use.

In your search for an image hosting site you should consider the following:

1.) Cost of the site? If you are just posting to InsideIllini, I would recommend the free ones. You can also buy upgrades on the free sites if you require additional bandwidth or other features.

2.) Will the website allow hotlinking? For example, posting to InsideIllini website)

3.)  Whate image File Formats supported? This will depend upon which type of images you plan to post (i.e. JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, TIFF, SWF, etc).

4.) Maximum file size? (unless you are getting into spreadsheets with a lot of text and need higher resolution then 1 Megabyte should be enough)

5.) What are the Bandwidth restrictions? For those who don't understand what bandwidth is, it is the measure of data passed through the network over a period of time.  Image hosting websites usually restrict the amount of bandwidth per month.  Just think of it as the number of times your photo would be accessed over a period of time.  If you have a 1 Mb picture and it is viewed 100 times in an InsideIllini thread, then you have have used 100 Mb of bandwidth.  If you exceed an image hosting site's bandwidth restrictions, they either cut off access to the image, or there is the possibility they might charge you for it (if you provided credit card information when you signed up).  Since InsideIllini gets a lot of traffic, it's advisable to seek image hosting sites with large amounts of bandwidth availability (i.e. Photobucket has 10 Gb per month).  Some sites have unlimited bandwidth.

6.) Ease of use (uploading pictures, viewing your pictures, logging in, etc.)

7.) There are other factors which you can pull off of this rankings page

I personally use Photobucket, but would like to find another site that allows for larger files so spreadsheets pictures don't lose as much resolution, so I might try ImageShack later this year.   I've listed a few below:

Photobucket

ImageShack

Flickr

How to use an Image Hosting Website

Because there are so many out there, it's pointless to describe in detail how to hotlink a picture from an image hosting website to an InsideIllini post, because the details will vary depending upon the image hosting website.  However, I'll give general instructions so those unfamiliar with the concept can understand what to do.

1.) Select an an image hosting website and setup an account (if required)

2.) Upload your images from your hard drive to the image hosting website using the website's instructions.  Depending upon the website you use, they may not create thumbnail images of your images, so it would be advisable to rename your image file names to something descriptive before uploading them.

3.) Navigate the hosting website to view the image fullsize (Some hosting websites allow you to view all of your pictures as thumbnail pictures, and if you copy and paste a thumbnail picture then your resulting post will be a small thumbnail picture).  Some websites (i.e. Flicker) may be a little tricky to get to get to a fullsize image where you can copy it, so you'll have to play with the website a little bit.

4.) Depending upon the browser you are using, use one of the "How to post a picture using..." methods previously described within this thread.

5.) Remember if you delete or rename your picture on the image hosting website then it will disappear from your InsideIllini post.
