HELP TOPIC: How to post a Hyperlink

General Information

  • The easiest way to create a hyperlink within an InsideIllini post depends upon which web browser you use to create the post.  Firefox, Chrome and the Safari web browsers are causing most of the linking problems. To create a hyperlink refer to the section below that corresponds to the browser you are using.

  • There are different ways to create hyperlinks with each browser, and I'll identify the easiest way for each browser.  I will also show a more involved method that can be used on all browsers to create hyperlinks to specific text (i.e. "Link").

  • The methods below should instantly create a hyperlink within the message window where you create your post. This means that the URL address text will immediately turn blue with an underline.  If you just see a URL address in your posting window with black text, then it is not a hyperlink and will not magically become one after you post your message.

  • For those unfamiliar with the terminology, a "URL address" is the same thing as a "website address"

Re: HELP TOPIC: How to post a Hyperlink

How to create a hyperlink using
MOZILLA FIREFOX &

GOOGLE CHROME

I. Cut/Copy and Paste Method

First of all, DO NOT USE THIS METHOD WITH FIREFOX OR CHROME. I'm only mentioning it because it is causing a lot of broken link problems on the boards. When using a Firefox or Chrome browsers, DO NOT Copy/Cut and paste the URL address into a post. When you do this, a hyperlink will not be created, and Firefox will add spaces to the URL address. Use the following drag & drop favicon method, or the method that can be used by all browsers listed beneath the Safari browser explanation.

II. Drag and Drop Favicon Method (Easiest)

For those who don't know what a "Favicon" is, it is the little icon on your web browser address bar directly to the left of the URL address.  Here's some more info LINK.   You can drag favicons to your bookmark folders and also into a posting window to create a hyperlink.

NOTE: Favicon will not look exactly like the picture above, it may be a unique logo for the website, or if the website hasn't created a unique favicon then the browser will insert a default one.

The great thing about Firefox & Chrome is that it allows you to drag your favicon from one browser tab into another one in the same browser.  You can also drag favicons across two separate browser windows.  Windows Internet Explorer doesn't allow you drag across tabs.  See the following step by step instructions to learn how to drag a favicon from one tab to another tab that has an InsideIllini posting window. It's simple enough that once you do it a single time, you'll never have to refer back to this.

1.) Open InsideIllini posting window in tab of your Firefox or Chrome browser.  If you also want to add text in your post, you should add a few return keystrokes to separate the text from the hyperlink to avoid potential formatting problems.

2.) Open website you wish to link in another tab of the same Firefox/Chrome browser

3.) Place your mouse cursor directly over the favicon of website you wish to link

4.) Left click and hold your mouse and drag the favicon over the browser tab where your InsideIllini posting window is located

5.) Still holding the left button wait a moment for Firefox to open the posting tab

6.) Drag the favicon into the posting window and release to create a hyperlink -- which will immediately turn blue with an underline in your posting window.

7.) Complete your post then select the Post button

8.) Most importantly, verify that the hyperlink you created works properly after you posted it

Re: HELP TOPIC: How to post a Hyperlink

How to create a hyperlink using

WINDOW INTERNET EXPLORER (IE)

I. Cut/Copy and Paste Method (Easiest)
Unfortunately the method in Firefox & Chrome that causes all the linking problems on the board, is the easiest method to create hyperlinks in IE.  The step by step instructions are as follows.
1.) Open InsideIllini posting window in a IE or a separate IE browser)

2.) Open website you wish to link in another tab (or a separate browser)

3.) Select (highlight) the URL address in the address bar that you wish to link

4.) Right click your mouse and select Copy (or Ctrl + C)

5.) Go to the InsideIllini posting window and right click where you want to create hyperlink

6.) Select Paste (or Ctrl + V) a hyperlink with blue underlined text will be immediately created in the posting window

7.) Complete your post then select Post button

8.) Most importantly, verify that the hyperlink you created works properly after you posted it

II. Drag and Drop Favicon Method
This method is not recommended because you can't drag a favicon across browser tabs.  However, you can drag and drop a favicon across two separate browser windows.  So if you have a larger computer monitor, or don't mind stretching the size of two separate browsers, you can use this method.   I won't give step by step instructions, but to accomplish this method first familiarize yourself with what a "favicon" is in the Firefox instructions above.  Then drag and drop a favicon from one browser window into the InsideIllini posting window located in another browser window.

How to create a hyperlink using
SAFARI (both PC & Mac versions)

I. Cut/Copy and Paste Method

First of all, DO NOT EVER USE THIS METHOD WITH SAFARI. Safari in addition to Firefox is a source of broken links on the board because people are using the wrong method. When using a Safari browser, DO NOT Copy/Cut and paste the URL address into a post. When you do this a hyperlink will not be created. When using Safari, please use the following drag & drop favicon method, or the method that can be used by all browsers listed below.

II. Drag and Drop Favicon Method (Easiest)

For those who don't know what a "Favicon" is, it is the little icon on your web browser address bar directly to the left of the URL address.  Here's some more info LINK.

NOTE: Favicon will not look exactly like the picture above, it may be a unique logo for the website, or if the website hasn't created a unique favicon then the browser will insert a default one.

Creating a hyperlink in Safari is probably the most difficult of all browsers.  However, it's still not really that difficult using the favicon method described below.

1.) Open InsideIllini posting window in a Safari browser.  If you also want to add text in your post, you should add a few return keystrokes to separate the text from the hyperlink to avoid potential formatting problems.

2.) Open website you wish to link in a completely separate Safari browser. Do not open in another tab as you can not drag favicons from one tab into another tab in Safari.

3.) Resize and move the Safari browser window that has the link ('2.' above) so that if it overlaps the other Safari browser window, the Inside Illini posting window is at least partially visible.   If helps if you have a large monitor.

4.) Place your mouse cursor directly over the favicon of website you wish to link in one Safari browser

5.) Left click and hold your mouse and drag the favicon over to the other Safari browser where your InsideIllini posting window is located

6.) Drag the favicon into the posting window and release to create a hyperlink -- which will immediately turn blue with an underline in your posting window.

7.) Complete your post then select the Post button

8.) Most importantly, verify that the hyperlink you created works properly after you posted it

How to create a hyperlink to specific text (i.e. "LINK")
Works on ALL BROWSERS

1.)  Type some text in your message like you normally would (i.e. the word "LINK").  It's a good idea to add a couple of spaces behind the text in case you want to add more text after you create your hyperlink and not struggle with hyperlink text formatting.

2.) Select (highlight) the text you want have a hyperlink

3.) While the text is highlighted, select the link button.  It's looks like a chain link and is located on the formatting bar to the right of the numbered list button (the one with '1', '2' & '3' on it)

4.)  A dialog box will pop up.  Copy and Paste the URL from the browser for the article into the line labeled"Link URL". This is the only information you need to add, so ignore the "Target" & "Title" lines. If you don't know how to copy and paste, just select (highlight) the text in your browser address then right click and select "copy", then in the dialog box right click and select "paste"

5.) Select the Insert button on the dialog box

6.) Complete your post as you normally would and select the "postbutton

7.) Most important of all, test your link after you have made your post

Re: HELP TOPIC: How to post a Hyperlink

When posting hyperlinks it helps to set the "Target" to "Open link in a new window".  That way you can still look at the original post by tabbing between windows.
