With the Big 10 network (50 states and Canada) picking up hockey that is going to lead to big $$$ for the teams playing hockey in conference.  Also the Illini would have a killer schedule having home dates with the likes of Minn, Wisco, and Mich every year.

I've always thought Illinois is an underrated hockey state and being smack in the middle of all of the USHL teams (which produces 80-90% of all  D1 hockey players) doesn't hurt.   Illinois also has almost 25,000 USA hockey members playing which is in the top 5 in the USA.   I cant imagine the Hawks winning the Cup isn't a plus for interest as well.

To me it's amazing that the state does not have a D1 team yet.

Re: Adding Hockey?

The Big Ten is adding hockey, the U of I Ice Arena is hopelessly overbooked, our club program is ascendant (well, not this season, but generally) and has created a very good following, we're in the planning stages of an arena renovation, and we're about to have a new AD who will be looking for statement items on his/her resume.

There's a lot of stuff moving in that direction.

But make no mistake, it will take money, which means it will take winning football games. That's the answer to every question about Illinois athletics (or indeed any other school).

They've wanted a new ice arena for a long time.  However, unless they add a woman's sport with an equivalent number of participants, they cannot add men's hockey.  Given the economics of the situation, that may be difficult to obtain.  IMHO

exactly - have to comply with Title IX requirements

what women's sport would be added?  Crew? Bowling? Synchronized Swimming? Field Hockey? Squash? Water Polo? (got those from the Stanford website - offer 18 women's varsity sports)

Re: Adding Hockey?

As much as I hate title IX...Why not women's Ice Hockey?

The state of Illinois produces a fair amount of female hockey players and the there would be little additional cost from a facilities point of view.

Re: Adding Hockey?

Illinois will have more money at its disposal with the increasing BTN revenues, and once the Big 10 renegotiates its premium contract with ESPN in 2016, Illinois will probably have at least an additional 10 million+ per year on top of that.

The Big 10 currently gets $100 million/year for the rights to its premium games from a contract with ESPN negotiated in 2006.  With the cost of TV rights skyrocketing and increased competition in the industry from FOX, CBS, etc. that number will probably triple in 2016 (for comparison, the Pac-12 just sold its premium rights for $250 million/year).  The Big 10 premium rights are widely known as the most-valuable TV rights in college football.

There was talk when my daughter was on the Illini Dance Team that they would make them a sport as they compete in the name of the University of Illinois.......don't know what ever happened with that.

finding enough opponents could be problematic.

Re: Adding Hockey?

Women CAN play Hockey.

While the best women stand NO chance whatsoever against the best men (esspecially if it's full checking), they can still play and certainly against other women.  Women playing hockey probably looks less ackward than women playing basketball.

I know some women that can outplay men.  I know a guy who's wife is much better than him.  We had a girl on my intramural team at Illinois.  She was cute too!  I played out of position on Defense with her and we did not have a single goal scored on us that season while our shift was on the ice.

Penn State is adding Men's AND Women's hockey.  Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio State already have D1 Women's teams.

You need 18 scholarships for D1 hockey.   One alternative is simply to add a women's hockey team.   Another alternative is to perhaps add one womens team (such as field hockey, lacross, crew, water polo, etc.) adding 8,9, or 10 rides and then dropping one mens sport that is a drain on the Ath Dept. (such as gymnastics, tennis, cross country, etc) with 8,9,or 10 rides to keep the scholarship count at balance.   Schools that have recently added hockey have used both of these scenarios.

Personally I think it would be a big loss if Illinois did not add hockey.   With the revenue from ticket sales, jersey/merchandise sales, Big 10 TV revenue, donations etc. it would be a big win for the school and the branding of Illinois to a national audience.   Also, Illinois has enough talent just in the state to fill one but more likely two or three D1 rosters along with being smack in the middle of the USHL.

The state of Illinois has produced 44 NHL players including Chris Chelios, Ed Olczyk, Tony Granato, and Joe Corvo.

if the UI adds men's hockey, adding womens LAX makes most sense

Re: Adding Hockey?

Women's hockey sounds like a slam dunk to me.  And yes they can play, and the ones at a high level would love to play checking hockey (I've been roughed up by very skilled and strong women, I've also had smaller women out play me.)  Tonight I played pickup hockey with a group of 9 (4 on 5) that included 2 women; one the size and strength of a guy, the other much smaller but with great stamina and attitude.

From ref'ing women's hockey I would say that they also tend (not always, but often) to bring a more sportsman like attitude to the game.

Plus they smell better; they actually wash their gear and at a recreational level they sometimes wear perfume.  (Sorry if that came across as sexist, but what's not to like?!)

I would go for STARTING with women's hockey, but I think there's lots to say for bringing both in at the same time.

Re: Adding Hockey?

I don't know if this fits here, but while I skated as a kid, I really learned to skate at Illinois (I think I took 3 classes, all with figure skates.)  Ice skating is a lifetime sport, and also leads naturally to cross country skating.  If there's a fundraising effort behind this, I'll be a (small but) easy target!

I am pretty sure thats the jersey they wore as well in the early 80's when I was a student, although I only went to one hockey game .   I just wasnt a fan of the game then

Too bad we didnt have a hockey jersey that was a knock off of the Blackhawks,   although I guess if we did,  the North Dakota Fighting Sioux would claim infringment.

I guess I just really dont understand why some schools get to keep native american imagery,  and others dont,  or perhaps we just gave in way to easy, or our admin is just way too left.
