Illini at the NFL Combine

Posted: 2/23/2013 11:27 AM

Illini at the NFL Combine

Hugh Thorton (6'3 320lbs), OG, Grade: 67.9.   40 Yrd Dash - 5.10  Bench - 27 reps
http://www.nfl.com/combine/pro...nton?id=2539649

Akeem Spence (6'1 307lbs), DT, Grade: 66.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/pro...ence?id=2540201

Terry Hawthorne (6'0 190lbs), CB, Grade: 69.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/pro...orne?id=2539238

Michael Buchanan (6'5 255lbs), DE, Grade 69.5.

...I still find it strange Pocic didn't even get invited.  As he was a 3 year starter, unless I'm mistaking???  And he's versatile as I'm assuming he could play both Guard or Center.  IMO, I thought he would've been invited, but oh-well I guess.

Re: Illini at the NFL Combine

Thanks for the links. I think Black Cat, if healthy, is the best chance we have of a player going in the top two rounds. Buchanan is quite impressive as well, if he's up to 255 lbs.

I noticed that they are doing 40 times for punters/kickers this morning. Why?

I don't even understand why they bother doing it for Offensive Linemen? Downfield blocking? Is it a measure for quickness off the ball or quick feet?

40 times are almost strictly for entertainment anyway, and what's more entertaining then watching a punter run. They should all be required to run with the single bars face masks.

Re: Illini at the NFL Combine

Personally I think Spence and Buchanan both go before Hawthorne.  It could certainly go either way though.  But I'm just not all that crazy about Hawthorne ball skills for a CB.  Buchanan will almost certainly be looked at as a 3-4 OLB.  Spence could put up some big numbers in the bench, guy is crazy strong.

The offensive lineman 40 is more for the 10/20 yard splits than the 40.  It gives a little bit of an idea for quickness off the ball, that's about it.  Nobody really cares about their 40 time.

Re: Illini at the NFL Combine

Hawthorne ran a 4.4 flat unofficially. Hopefully the official time stays below 4.5 (edit: as of noon) It's looking like he's off the unofficial leader board.

NFL network cut to commercial for both of Terry's runs. Bastards.

As a CB noted with some broad size, I'd have liked to see closer to 20 bench reps, but whatever.

Ouch, Mayock just mentioned him getting torched against La Tech.

Re: Illini at the NFL Combine

Terry was playing hurt in the La Tech game against a really fast WR (still don't know why he wasn't given safety help). I think Terry can definitely play in the NFL this upcoming season,he's every bit as good as Tavon(very good season with the Patriots this past year). NFL.com says he ran a 4.44

ILLINI .. No matter WHAT!

If you bash Former Illini players, then you simply aren't an Illini fan.
Haters gonna hate!

We, as fans, know exactly the player Terry can be when healthy... And it's not orange and blue goggles. He can be the most dynamic player on a football field if he gets the time he needs on the field to adjust to the speed of the game. I'm a little disappointed in his combine, selfishly, because I was pretty sure he'd need to pop eyes out of skulls to squeak into the first round, and I'm petty sure that didn't happen today.

I'm disappointed in that aspect, but it does mean he has a chance to be drafted later to a good team. I think he'll be a solid defensive back in the league for a while, if he can stay healthy.

I hope he makes some headlines at the pro day.

Re: Illini at the NFL Combine

Personally, I think Terry should add a little weight and move to FS.  He did a good job coming up and tackling from his CB position.  We also know that he has the speed to get side to side on the field.  I never saw what I thought were elite ball skills or quickness in and out of his breaks in covering recievers.  For an athletic guy, he always looked stiff to me at CB.

Re: Illini at the NFL Combine

Whoever drafts Terry is going to get a terrific football player IMO - he's got the size you need in today's nfl, good speed and quickness and has a chance to be a great cover corner in my mind.  Could be a safety in a cover 2
