How Texas lost Texas to A&M

Texas's Deloss Dodds Grapples With Losing Legacy : Outkick The Coverage

Poor DeLoss Dodds, he's starting to realize what Outkick the Coverage has been telling y'all for a couple of years now -- that his most lasting legacy is going to be as the athletic director who lifted Texas A&M athletics past the University of Texas. Dodds reached for the nation with the Longhorn Network and in the process he lost his state to the Aggies. Remember when Dodds said before the 2012 football season that the Aggies and the SEC were no threat to Texas and that they had a small sliver of the east side of Texas? Yeah, then the Aggies went 11-2, posted massive television ratings in Austin, had a redshirt freshman win the Heisman trophy, crushed Texas in 2013 recruiting, and are a consensus top five team in the 2013 preseason.

When Alabama comes to College Station on September 14, that contest will be bigger than any football game the Longhorns have hosted on campus in a decade.

Being so greedy can come back to bite you in the arse, and Dodds doesn't have much of a rear end left. He screwed the pooch on the Longhorn Network and running off the Huskers and Aggies. Buffaloes and Tigers arent conference difference makers.

Didn't think Sumlin would turn around the Aggies this quick, but didn't know Johnny football would be a great QB.

I miss Illini football being competitive, but my attention is now in College Station where my kids attended. Gig em.

Look for an Illinois type house cleaning down in Austin. Dodds cant be happy with Barnes or Brown. Guessing he wont be around to name their replacements. 2012 tough year for even for Baseball for the Longhorns.

UT had it all going for them only a few years ago...national championships in football and baseball, contending in basketball, outstanding women's programs, etc.

But you asked how they lost it.  Are you saying it's all due to being greedy with their proposed Longhorn TV network that excluded the rest of the Big 12??

Lesson to be learned.

Deloss thought the Texas brand was so strong that it didn't matter who they played.

Boy was he wrong and Texas is paying the price.

It turns out that a conference is only as good as its weakest links and the Big 12 has a lot of weak links now.

Longhorns are despised due to their greed and arrogance. 4 very local teams left as a result and the Aggies are looking at Austin in their rear view mirror. WVA in Big 12; you can't be serious?

So does this mean Texas might be looking at the big ten or PAC 12?

Aggies have more resources than MSU and it isn't close.

Aggies don't need UT and move to SEC is brilliant so far. With Big 12 going the way of the Cotton Bowl, Aggie football will be much stronger in near term.

i concur that A&M will never be bigger than UT.  sure, you can write about massive TV ratings in Austin and a great recruiting class, but UT is still UT.
.
Also, Texans are NOTORIOUS front-runners.  UT fans will suddenly become Aggie fans with the turning of the winds.  as soon as A&M is down or UT is back up you'll see 'horns fans coming out of the woodwork

+1, Aggie gets all bowed up after winning a non-bcs game.  Don't get me wrong they had a nice year, and Sumlin is legit.

THe problem with that is that UT is playing in the Big 12 while A&M is now playing in the SEC, the premier college football conference.   The best of Texas high school players are going to want to play at A&M to play against the best in the SEC.   UT will get its share of quality high school football players but I think going forward, A&M is going to snagged the best of them.

That suggests that UT is either going to recruit big name football schools to the B12 (Notre Dame, Miami FL, Florida State, Clemson, NC State, Virginia Tech) or its going to have to join a different conference (B10, Pac12).

Re: How Texas lost Texas to A&M

There is a lot of hoopla being made over one great year in College Station. Witnessing it firsthand, I'd say that there is a good chance the Aggies finally got over their perpetual position as an also-ran in Texas. With one or two more good seasons in the books the next two years, I think that fact is basically cemented.

Still, I think it is pretty premature to claim they have wrested the state away from the Longhorns or that the Longhorns ceded it to them. It would likely take a decade of dominance to truly unseat the Longhorns as the kings of Texas. It would take significantly less to develop into a situation where the two programs are on a more equal standing, though. I think that is what we are already seeing.

Who knows, though. It sure was fun to watch Manziel and the rest of the team this year. I wish the Illini had been even 10% as exciting as that. frowndisbeliefohlord

Like Avis Rent A Car, Aggies have been #2 in Texas since beginning of college sports. However, they are not a "perpetual also-ran in Texas." Being #2 to Texas is like being #2 to Exxon or IBM. Not too shabby.

However, I think that is changing with the Horns stuck in the free falling Big 12 while the Aggies landed in the #1 football conference in the country by far. In a few years, UT football could be #1, Aggies #1A or vice versa in this state.

As an indication of the importance of football in the South and the vast sums of wealth spawned by the oil industry, Aggies announced a $400M expansion to 90K seat Kyle Field.

It would seem that football is doing ok in College Station, not so good in Austin.cool

As an indication of the importance of education the students have organized a campaign to avoid paying more fees and to take extra money from academia in order to help finance this rebuild.

I see it as kind of an Auburn/Alabama thing. A&M will have their "up" years, but I don't think the program as a whole will be able to surpass UT for good.

This is part of the reason I would never want to see Texas in the Big Ten.

Re: How Texas lost Texas to A&M

I agree with both the comparison to Mich/MSU as well as the fact that the Aggies have more resources.  Actually, Texas as a state, has more resources than Michigan does.  There are very few other states in which a school (such as Texas and A&M) could survive solely on recruiting in-state players.  A&M joining the SEC and Texas over-estimating their worth are a perfect storm for the potential shift.  I agree with the other person on here who said that he wouldn't want Texas in the Big 10.  I wouldn't either, besides that albatross of the Longhorn Network existing would preclude them from ever being in the Big 10.  I would like nothing more than the Big 12 to implode and have it be the "Notre Dame of the South's" fault... Hook this!!!
