Marcus Berry Joins Fighting Illini Football Staff
Illinois football coach Tim Beckman announced today the hiring of Marcus Berry as director of player personnel
http://www.fightingillini.com/.../021813aaa.html
Totally unrelated to the football:
Berry played football at West Virginia and graduated in 1990 with a degree in sports management.....before joining the coaching staff at Friendly High School in Ft. Washington, Md. Berry served 11 years at Friendly where he also taught history, health and physical education. How do you teach in high school without an education degree?

I'm not sure how they do it in Maryland or Illinois, but here in Florida (or at least Broward County, Palm Beach, and Martin), all you need is a college degree in something, even if unrelated to what you teach. I have no problem with that. I'd rather have a high school math teach who has a degree in Mathematics than one that only has a degree in education.

Thats what I have been told. Perhaps you can get a certifcate other ways, I am not a teacher, I just have alot of them in my family.

In Illinois, there are places you can go to get a teaching certificate without a bachelors or Masters in Education. A friend of mine's wife is currently finishing up a program that consisted of 12 credit hours of classes to get her certificate (she has a bachelor's in something other than education). Then she still has to student teach to complete the program.

He does bring experience to the job. Maybe bring some ties back to the DC and Maryland area.

Well he made a real mess of things as Mayor of DC. Why would we want him working for us? Yeah he has DC connections, but are those the types of people we really want to associate with?

You need a degree in something plus an education certificate. You can major in history, English, mathematics, chemistry, or whatever it is you wish to teach. The education certificate has certain requisites, but you don't need to major in education.

In essence, with the extra hours needed to get the certificate (for those who did NO teaching classes in getting their Bachelors), and the semester of student teaching, its like an extra year in college. I do believe some universities do offer a program where you can essentilally get a masters in Ed to go with your Bachelors (in whatever subjest you studied) and get you the student teaching time all in a matter of 10 calendar months.

My daughter majored in English @ UI and then spent 2 years (including a semester of student teaching) getting certification at North Central. She is teaching today.

For a quick moment, I thought it said "Marvin Barry," and I was thinking it was Chuck's cousin.
Anyways, I hope it works out great!
