OT 50k to pack Soldier Field to watch College Hockey
Is it maybe time for Illinois to start taking a hard look at college hockey?
Illinois has:
-26000+ playing hockey in the state ranking it 6th nationally among state enrollments per USA Hockey -Illinois now has 66 kids playing D1 hockey and the numbers continue to rise -The state of Illinois has 0 D1 hockey teams -The Big Ten just added ice hockey as a conference sport
Soldier field will have 50k show up to watch college hockey while the game will be played on the Big 10 Network.....will anyone from the Illinois Athletic Department take notice?

UIC should've gotten rid of their men's basketball team back in the 90's --------------------------------------------- --- scottsdaledevil wrote:

We don't need another men's non rev sport. With Title 13 and the money woes at Illinois for sports, any drain away from two biggest sports would be wasteful.

Why would hockey have to be a non revenue sport? Given the statistics quoted earlier, I don't see why it could not be developed into a consistent revenue producing sport.

Is the ice arena still a viable building on campus? How many people does it hold?

Hockey is a real winner at many universities.
I thought we were looking at adding a team to the Big Ten members that play hockey.
Or, am I thinking of another sport - about a yr ago.

Penn St is adding mens hockey, that was the reason the B1G finally was making it a conference sport
I can not remember any sport that UI was going to add or proposing to add.

I used to watch the Illini club hockey team a lot when I lived in Champaign. They're a really good team year in and year out. I've always wished that they would go DI

It doesn't look like 50k from these pictures (and these are the top 4 teams in the Midwest?): http://galleries.apps.chicagot...r-field-photos/

probably 2/3 the players on the club team would be ineligible on a ncaa sanctioned team What I mean is that I wish Illinois would get a DI team because the club team is a lot of fun to watch and the atmosphere is a lot of fun, not that Illinois should have a U$C football or Kentucky basketball version of a hockey team (which I'm sure that you already know this). I guarantee that the club team wouldn't go winless if they played an all-DI team schedule.

RE: OT 50k to pack Soldier Field to watch College Hockey
yeah, i will be shocked if we draw over 40k next year in Soldier Field. that game is a mistake. we are not at a point as a program that we need to leave anywhere and go play somewhere. Dominating the Chicago market isn't about playing a game there - its about winning games. illini34 wrote: It might Be embarrassing that the hockey today might outdraw football next fall

RE: OT 50k to pack Soldier Field to watch College Hockey
I think a lot more UW fans come than we realize. I have heard rumors that their alumni are trying to make it the travel game. Heck they might outdraw us. No one I know is interested in going --------------------------------------------- --- illiniranger wrote: yeah, i will be shocked if we draw over 40k next year in Soldier Field. that game is a mistake. we are not at a point as a program that we need to leave anywhere and go play somewhere. http://galleries.apps.chicagot...r-field-photos/ Hey Fonzie, that pic was taken during game 1 where game 2 was the main draw. The point is that none of these schools even reside in this state and are drawing 50k. Hockey can be a money maker at Illinois it just take the school making a commitment to going D1. Cut a few money losers and add hockey to increase the bottom line and the branding of the university in a hockey crazy state.
