We're not exactly the poster boys of good behavior

Not at all! We were Fulmer Cup champions a few seasons ago.biggrin

I'm waiting for the first reject to say "if we had given these players stipends".

I'd safe if they were less stupid and full of steroids and recreational drugs, we wouldn't have these problems.

If one football player screws up on a weekend and gets arrested that would be about 1% of the team getting in trouble. If a basketball player gets in trouble it is about 5%.

There are over 42,000 students enrolled at UIUC. Are you implying that in the same amount of time 4.200 students are being arrested? 115 a day?

Just saying ...............

Yep. I guess the one good part about sucking as bad as Illinois does is that they don't make the front page of ESPN when a player gets arrested.

*-season includes games later vacated due to NCAA sanctions; actual records were 35-2 in 1995-96 and 38-2 in 2007-08. NCAA Tournament appearances were also vacated in 1996 and 2008.

Actually, it would be 420 (1% of 42,000) and only a little more than 1 per day.  Probably still a smaller # of normal college students than football and/or basketball players that get arrested though...

The one guy should have the book thrown at him. Punching/knocking out an unsuspecting fellow student, kicking him while he's down and then stealing his wallet. That is BS.

Oops. Thanks for the correction.

Re: The Alabama Crimson Thugs

No problem.  I think part of the problem/issue with all of these incidents happening is the advent of social media as well as ESPN and all of the other 24 hour sports channels.  It's just like in the pros.  Do people really think there is that much more alcohol/drug abuse, spousal abuse, carrousing going on nowadays as there was back in the 50s and 60s OR even in the 20s and 30s? No, they're just reported more often and the news gets out there.  Back before the advent of the digital age, the Yankees were notorious boozers, fighters, and womanizers but the info didn't get out like it does today.

That being said, it doesn't make what has been done justified in anyway.  The people involved should get what they have coming.  What they did was cowardly and showed the true colors of the type of people they are but not a true reflection of the football program.

Re: The Alabama Crimson Thugs

My question is how do they all have the money to post bail.  The largest bail was 65 grand, and if he has to pay only 10%, that is still $6,500.  The smallest bail was 5 grand, but the other two had to pay almost the same as the guy whose bail was 65 g. These aren't small bills for anybody that might be helping put a kid through college let alone the kids themselves.

Honestly, it seems like the players aren't given much more than cars and suits.
