Paterno family still fighting to save his legacy

I don't think dredging this up again is in their best interest....

I think we should take up a collection for them....
Collect all the trash in Happy Valley and dump it on Joe's house and make it the new landfill.

I'm not sure whether they're a bunch of scumbags or they're just the dumbest family in the US

Those two choices are not mutually exclusive.

It'll take a lot more than turd polish to help Paterno's legacy.

Everytime you turn around there seems to be another smoking gun showing that Paterno not only knew what was going on but used his power and influence to force PSU top administrators  to at best look the other way and at worst to conciously conspire to cover up the crimes including the pressuring of PSU staff and coaches NOT to bring this to light and/or take it to the authorities.

All this was an overt attempt to protect the reputation and image of the PSU football program and the reputation and legacy of Joe Paterno AT THE EXPENSE OF YOUNG KIDS!!!

May Paterno, Sandusky, the PSU administrators and PSU nation all rot in hell.

The more they twist and turn the tighter the rope gets around their collective necks. They are prolonging the agony at Penn State now by keeping up with the denials and phoney counterattacks after the fact.

The Paterno family in general is just looking more and more ignorant.

Didn't read the whole thing, but a couple of their complaints are that in one of the e-mails it simply references "coach" and they claim that this was not necessarily Paterno.  Also another e-mail that says they changed their minds about reporting things after talking with "Joe" doesn't in itself prove Paterno was part of the cover up.  Seems to be a highly technical legal argument that doesn't really change the widely held conclusion that Paterno knew and did nothing.

I could care less about his legacy or Penn State for that matter but they have a point. I haven't even graduated from law school yet but if I turned in a report lie Freeh did that is full of conclusions that he drew from murky (at best) facts (in some cases) I would be laughed at. The guy didn't interview most of the big players and then weaves this story. I don't know if he had an agenda, was incompetent or just wanted to close the chapter on this mess but I wouldn't base my opinions one way or the other on the Freeh report.

That was the conclusion that the Freeh report came up with but did you read the report? What was the original course of action? Freeh never talked to Curly, Paterno or Spanier he makes what he thinks are logical conclusions. I'm not saying his conclusions are wrong but they aren't definitive. But beyond that so few of his conclusions are even based on facts which to me is the most troubling part of his report. He could be completely right but he could also be completely wrong. I don't know what to believe but I know the Freeh report didn't prove anything to me regarding Joe Paterno's culpability in these acts, heck I still don't know what McQuerry reported to Paterno (I've heard everything from horsing around to Sodomy).

RE: Paterno family still fighting to save his legacy

Not this again.  Paterno REFUSED to talk to Freeh.  Curly and Spanier were under indictment/investigation and therefore they also did not talk to Freeh.  Paterno and many people knew back in 1998.  Paterno himself said afterwards "I wish I did more".  Pretending they didn't know because the evidence is sketchy is putting one's head in the sand and believing what you want to believe.  I read the entire Freeh report.  There is plenty of evidence to show that at the very least, Paterno, Spanier, Curly and McQueary were in the know from at least 2001 and as to the 3 (other than McQueary), since 1998.  You don't care about Paterno's legacy?  Well the sole purpose of the Paterno family here is ONLY to protect his legacy.  Ironic that they still don't get it.

To add to this, why would Paterno refuse to talk to Freeh?  Could be he was ill.  If Paterno were completely innocent he would have talked to Freeh and Freeh would have cleared Paterno's name in his report.  BUT if Paterno knew he was complicit he didn't want to be interviewed and forced to either lie or admit what he knew.

To add to this further, in the shock of things last year PSU/Penn politicos and others threw themselves on the mercy of the NCAA.  Now that they've regained their footing, O'Brien is showing promise etc., they want to rid themselves of the consequences of the sanctions.  Funny how everything is timed out to hit about once every two months.  First the Pa Gov files a lawsuit.  Then a couple of congressmen get into the act.  Now the Paterno family issues their defense of JoPa and add another push to get rid of the sanctions.  Phil Knight, the governor, Thornburgh -all shook their heads and took the punishment last year.  Now they are doing an about face and challenging things.  Like a child who cries when confronted with his wrongdoing and takes his punishment, but then after the shock of getting caught wears off, contends he did nothing wrong.  Students of history have seen this act a thousand times.

RE: Paterno family still fighting to save his legacy

Can't help but laugh when someone emphatically claims to have read the entire Freeh report (as opposed to the summation, maybe) and then proceeds to hop on his soapbox to trumpet "the truth."

To wit...."The Special Investigative Counsel requested an interview with (Joe) Paterno in December 2011. Through his counsel, Paterno expressed interest in participating but died before he could be interviewed."  Quoted verbatim from the Freeh Report, Page 53.

Heir Freeh must have forgotten the above when, in reply to The Paterno Report a mere half-hour following its release, he wrote "During the investigation we contacted Mr. Paterno's attorney in an attempt to interview Mr. Paterno. Although Mr. Paterno was willing to speak with a news reporter and his biographer at that time, he elected not to speak with us."  Quoted verbatim from Louis Freeh's response to The Paterno Report.

Which is it, Louis?

And if certain naysayers choose to quote Joe Paterno, at least have the common decency to get the quote right ("With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more") instead of patently engaging in their self-serving agenda-building.

Agenda? What was Freeh's agenda? We certainly know what the agenda of the Paterno family and the various lawsuits are. Anyone who pretends to believe that Paterno and company were blissfully ignorant of Sandusky's crimes for over 10 years is either a fool or has an agenda.

Regardless of the qualifier, for one to wish he had done more is in itself an admission that he had knowledge of the situation and the power to do something about it.
