FootballScoop reporting Greg Colby to Return to UI as DL coach
http://footballscoop.com/the-scoopIllinois: Sources tell us that Greg Colby, who recently resigned as head coach at Millersville University (D-II - PA), will become the new defensive line coach at Illinois. http://www.millersvilleathleti...hes.aspx?rc=257From 1988-95, Colby was assistant coach for outside linebackers and special teams at Illinois. Colby helped the Fighting Illini to a Big Ten Championship in 1989 and six bowl appearances in seven years. From 1982-1986, Colby was head coach at Naperville Central High School in Illinois and led the team to a 24-13 record and a conference championship in 1983.
From 1979-82, Colby coached the Schlarman High School football team to a pair of Illinois Class 2-A championships (13-0 in 1980 and 12-1 in 1981). He also served as athletic director of the school from 1981-82.
Colby played football and baseball at the University of Illinois. He was a three-year starter for the Fighting Illini football team and a three-year starter for the baseball team. Colby was team captain of the baseball squad in 1974.
Prior to a year of playing amateur and semi-pro baseball, Colby graduated from Danville High School in 1970. He was an all-state team captain for the football and baseball teams during his senior year. He also lettered in basketball.

Re: FootballScoop reporting Greg Colby to Return to UI as DL
Well, he was here during some winning years and won a couple of state championships as a high school coach. Maybe this will help recruit in-state kids. He's been in PA long enough to have built connections on the eastern edge of the conference. Maybe this will work out.
Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence until AFTER you're on the other side of the fence.

Got to know Greg in college. Different fraternities but had a mutual friend. Got reaquinted when he joined the Illinois staff. A truly great guy. Think he'll be a great recruiter. Very personable and approachable. Welcome back Greg. Hope you have a great run at Illinois.

Re: FootballScoop reporting Greg Colby to Return to UI as DL
i really like the fact that both cubit and colby have head coaching experience. that in itself has to mean an upgraded staff. we still need players to succeed. but fixing the coaching staff is a start. maybe they can at least make us competitive in games even if we still lose more than we win next year.

I'm a '73 Grad from DHS and used to watch him play both sports. Quite the competitor. My older Bro graduated in '70 with Colby and played on his teams. Should help in-state recruiting. The Colby name used to be very well known in the State......including Greg's younger Bro (Terry) who played F-ball and B-ball (who I played on his teams).

Re: FootballScoop reporting Greg Colby to Return to UI as DL
As an NU fan, this is truly great news. It just keeps getting better and better for us for you guys. What seems to have been left off of your bio is that Greg Colby was Northwestern's defensive coordinator from 2002 to 2007. His tenure is described as nothing other than abysmal. Here is how his overall defenses fared those seasons, and future NFL players on those squads.
2002 11th (Luis Castillo) (11th against the run/2nd against the pass) 2003 9th (Luis Castillo, Barry Cofield) (8th against run/10th against pass) 2004 8th (Luis Castillo, Barry Cofield, Nick Roach) (8th against run/9th against pass) 2005 11th (Barry Cofield, Nick Roach) (10th against run/10th against pass) 2006 7th (Corey Wootton, Nick Roach) (9th against run/5th against pass) 2007 10th (Corey Wootton, Sherrick McManis) (10th against run/8th against the pass)
Oh, and in case you want to blame the talent, here is 2008, the first year Colby was gone.
2008 5th (Corey Wootton, Sherrick McManis) (4th against the run/8th against the pass)
But with the strong coaching decisions the Illini and Tim Beckman have made, I'm sure this will work out just fine for you guys.

This is a big ? right off. We'll see but can't get excited about this hire right off. Looks like we are settling for what's available now rather than hiring just what we need and want.
But - good luck to Colby and the Illini.

Re: FootballScoop reporting Greg Colby to Return to UI as DL
We have not hired him as a D-coordinator. We want his positional expertise which, to an extent, can be highlighted by some of the players you mentioned he had an influence on. ***** cats win one bowl game since the printing press was invented and now are football geniuses. puke. Lol!
I don't mind fans of other teams coming over to trash a hire or the team itself but he's not being hired as a coordinator. Just coaching the D-line Darth Kitty. --------------------------------------------- --- DarthCat wrote:

In case the information is not at your finger tips, I will add the last three years to your stats. Pretty safe to say Northwestern's defense has not been the strength of the team. 2012 8th and slightly ahead of the Illini. 2011 11th 2010 11th DarthCat wrote: As an NU fan, this is truly great news. BTW, you can put two of your losses this year squarely on your coaching staff. Let me guess, you have a Journalism degree from Northwestern? DarthCat wrote: As an NU fan, this is truly great news. Northwestern football is, and will always be, irrelevant.

Re: FootballScoop reporting Greg Colby to Return to UI as DL
Well, you left out the 5th place finishes in 2008 and 2009, and the fact that this year, we were third against the run. Either way, you'll learn soon enough. Really funny part is that with all those abysmal defenses, we were still 7-4 against the Illini over that time.
One interesting tidbit though, Colby is the only Northwestern coach fired since 1991. Seriously, we don't fire coaches, and he was the only one not retained in over 20 years.
Coaches have left for other opportunities, but ol' Greg did not. He was cut lose by the 33 year old head coach who was the linebacker coach on Colby's own staff two years earlier. From there he took the Millersville job where his teams went 11-44 over five years.
Oh, and they ranked as follows on defense in the illustrious 16 team Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference:
2008 16th Overall/15th against the run/16th against the pass 2009 16th Overall/16th against the run/15th against the pass 2010 16th Overall/16th against the run/15th against the pass 2011 13th Overall/14th against the run/10th against the pass (Oooooh, impressive rise) 2012 16th Overall/16th against the run/8th against the pass Ooooh, back down again)
I guess Millersville just could never play defense. But then, why in 2007, before Colby showed up did they have a better statistical year overall and against the run and against the pass?
2007 7th Overall/9th against the run/6th against the pass
But I'm sure I'm just 'cherry picking' stats and not showing all the relevant facts that show just how great a coach he is. After all, Tim Beckman obviously thinks highly of him, and isn't that the best endoresement Illini fans could hope to see?

Im not worried about the hire until Ive seen how he does.

In DarthCat's defense, he's right... but I don't think its appropriate to gloat over this. But its hard to deny that some of our worst defenses ever were when he was our DC. We used the term "Colby Swiss cheese" defense... because of the gaping holes. I'm guessing he'll do much better as a DL coach than a coordinator. That's his natural spot, IMHO.
