Won't miss any of the staff based upon last season's results.  Can't get much worse.

It definitely can and will.
We won't hit bottom until we fire Beckman.
Only then can a rebuild process begin.

With your certainty that things will get worse, one could surmise you have an agenda.  I think an objective opinion would be to see how things go next season with a revamped staff and another year in Beckman's system before we conclude with certainty that things will get worse.

Yes.  And people will post this same post on February 8, 2014.  But fair enough.

You are correct though ... I have so concluded.
I don't need to see anymore.

There is a name we are going to forget quickly.

You are a broken record. Come back when Beckman's fired because you add nothing new to any discussion by being a broken record.

Wow.. Right after signing day, curious timing but at least there is still hope UI can land a new defensive coordinator I guess.  Billy Gonzales seemed like a good recruiter but definitely not impressed with his coaching, this guy was "passing game" coordinator for LSU and they were a terrible passing offense despite their talent at WR.

He wasn't at Illinois.

Re: Billy Gonzales

Gonzales was at LSU, so he must at least be a competent position coach and good recruiter.  But, again, leaving aside the advisability of the co-OC arrangement, it was a serious mistake to have young, unproven, inexperienced guys as OC and OL coach, both critical roles.  The HC needs to assemble a staff comprised of both seasoned veterans and up-and-comers.  TB seems to have learned this lesson the hard way from last season's debacle.

Of course, younger, highly enthusiastic guys, who are also top-flight recruiters, must be part of the mix.  He should go this direction filling out the 2 open slots on the staff.

Where is everybody who raved about this hire 13 months ago?

We'll get back to you in a bit,  we're busy raving about the hire of Cubit

on paper,  Gonzales had a good resume.  In real life, it didnt work out for us. Its not uncommon in the business of college or pro football.   Many of us thought Paul Petrino was a good hire in 2009 too.

Re: Billy Gonzales

Never raved, but Gonzales was indisputably good enough to get hired as a position coach at LSU, and they don't go begging.  He wasn't put in a position to succeed last season.  It can't all be put on him.

I thought he'd be a good recruiter and wide receiver coach, but apparently he wasn't either of those.

He may very well have been a good WR coach...but for some reason we promoted him to co-OC which was a collasal messup.

sure it can. He sucked at the job he was given. Certainly, the hire was a stupid one in retrospect. But he had a job to do and he sucked.

This has to be the best news we fans could reasonably expect from staff shake-ups. I have yet to talk to a single person who had an overall positive impression of this guy from his time here

Re: Billy Gonzales

To me Lankford looked improve. Better routes. Don't know if that is just experience. Could have done some good things as a position coach if he stayed longer (recruiting too), but the demotion probably did not leave a good taste in his mouth.

Who knew it would be more difficult to recruit to UI than to LSU ?

I was big on this hire, had he not been co-OC. I think he would have had success with less responsibility.
