UNC is the prize. I dont think you need to be in a hurry to grab either Va or GaTech.

I hate these super conferences, ruining the game. So much for us ever being able to win a conference, it might come along once every 50 years.

Two great institutions that fit the B1G academically. Oh and UNC is uncle Jim's alma mater.

chitownredbirda wrote: UNC and UVA and call it a day! +1 It's still about contiguous expansion for the Big Ten. First they take UVA, with Virginia being contiguous with Maryland. Then they take UNC, with North Carolina being contiguous with Virginia. The SEC then picks up NC State and Virginia Tech.

Re: More expansion discussion
Interesting that Illinois and Purdue are pushing very hard for Georgia Tech over UNC and that has caused Delaney to take a slower step on UNC. Ultimately that might let UNC go to the SEC.
UNC won't leave the ACC before Virginia, they don't want to be viewed as breaking up the ACC.

If you believe the WVU blogger who had basicly guaranteed GT to the Big Ten about two months ago based on his "sources". Those here who were pimping hard for GT put a lot of faith in that fallacious statement. Note that he's now mentioning Duke, of all schools, to the SEC, which is thoroughly ridiculous (this is about football and the SEC isn't going to look to add another Vanderbilt-like school when NC State, Virginia Tech, etc. are out there). The only time he appears to get something right is when he mentions all of the possible combinations of who goes where and one of them comes true. His credibility is just about zero. The most unerringly accurate statement in his whole blog is, "keep in mind I don’t have direct knowledge of the discussion."

Re: More expansion discussion
I agree with you that his "inside info" has to be taken with a grain of salt, but as to Duke, could it be that in order to get UNC you have to take Duke? While Duke would add zero to football, it is an elite BB school for what it is worth. Again, may all be BS but politics could be forcing Duke on the SEC if this is true.

GT is the last my list despite the Atlanta tv market.
This move would be only to shove a surcharge on millions of cable subscriptions for folk who don't give a crap about GT.

Even taking Duke to get UNC doesn't make sense for the SEC. The SEC should be looking to expand its geographical footprint, markets, etc. Taking two North Carolina schools with their last two slots to get to 16 is inefficient, for the same reasons they don't need South Carolina AND Clemson, or Georgia AND Georgia Tech, or Florida AND Florida State/Miami, etc. Even if they can't get UNC, they would be better off taking NC State and Virginia Tech and expanding their reach into North Carolina, Virginia, and towards the Washington DC market. Really, why anyone would choose to get their information regarding Big Ten and SEC expansion from a WVA blogging doofus is beyond me.

This really isn't about academics anymore. Nebraska was a member of the AAU (until 2011) and that was one of the reasons membership in the Big Ten was extended to them. http://articles.chicagotribune...big-ten-membersFlorida State is not.

Florida State is not. No but they've been trying to get there for awhile now, how close they are I have no idea but if they are viewed as being a future member they would seem more palatable. I would absolutely love to see them in the conference and think they make sense for a variety of reasons, not least of which the other schools we covet I don't see as willing to leave an ACC that isn't completely falling apart. But I don't see it happening and think it is all just baseless internet speculation.

I think people are missing the fact that if the ACC did collapse there would still be an economically viable league left with the likes of UConn/Georgetown/Syracuse/Duke/Notre Dame, Cincy, Louisville, Pitt, and other's im missing I'm sure. that conference could conceivably also join with the Big 12, assuming that some of the current big 12 jump ship.

Re: More expansion discussion
No offense intended to anyone, least of all the original poster here, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why people continue to treat this WVU blogger as if he/she knows anything.
At this point, it's at least as likely that the ACC survives as it is that there is a complete implosion, and it's highly unlikely that anything happens either way until the Maryland/ACC lawsuit plays out.
I'm still waiting on the press conference announcing GT to the Big Ten that was "imminent"...6-8 weeks ago.

This move would be only to shove a surcharge on millions of cable subscriptions for folk who don't give a crap about GT. on top of that, the SEC already wants their own network and are looking into it with ESPN. and GT is not the alpha male in the state, nor would GT joining the B10 make the B10 the alpha conference in the state. with cable companies in Ga already looking at paying for an SEC Net in the future, hard to see them easily being flipped from paying out of state BTN fees to "in state" BTN fees, and putting BTN on basic in Ga. fact is, we have absolutely no idea if News Corp can even flip cable and satellite subs in NJ or Md yet. nor does Delany.
