Gators Should Stop Playing "Fair"

One thing I'm tired of as a fan is Florida trying to be above the fray when it comes to NCAA rules.  Screw the NCAA!.  I don't care if players use drugs or sell autographs.  Talent should only come off the field for very good reasons.

The fact that we had Cam Newton sitting behind Tebow and lost him over a stolen laptop and maybe some classroom cheating makes me sick.  So, the kid just plays Juco for a year, and then any other university can recruit him.  What kind of rules are these?

We should have paid hush money to the victim of the laptop theft, ignored any cheating in the classroom by Newton, and enjoyed another Heisman winner and won more games.  Instead, we were left with Brantley and the "3-bow" offense.

Things have to change.  In most jobs in the US, there are not drug tests performed on employees throughout the year.  They're usually only performed pre-hire or after a workplace injury.

Also, why should anyone else in society be able to make money based on any fame they obtain, but college athletes are forbidden to do so?  Even Olympic athletes can earn money from endorsements.

The system is broken and I feel like the Gators try to follow the rules, over and above winning, and I'm tired of it.  Do you think USC fans regret the championships they won under Carroll, because of the cheating?  Of course not.  We shouldn't care either.

Good freaking GOD!!!! ENOUGH WITH THE CAM NEWTON BS!!!! He left the school because he was getting kicked out of school. He was caught cheating on his tests three different times and was about to be kicked out by the honor board!!!! NCAA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. It happened because he was a POS!!!!

RE: Gators Should Stop Playing "Fair"

You miss the whole point.  The point is, who cares if he was cheating?  The NCAA would care, if they found out we let a guy stay on the team who was cheating.  The point is, we shouldn't try to be better than other schools when it comes to NCAA rules and when it comes to our athletes.

Screw the honor board!  All they did was cost us a Heisman trophy winner who came back to win it for a rival school a year later.  How does that benefit anyone, but our rival?  It was NCAA rules that allowed him to play at another FBS school.

It's easy to get that impression, but I also have the impression that Florida tries to be above that somehow, but why?  What has it done for us?

We get looked at bad when we have a player arrested for any reason...do you really think the NCAA would hesitate to take the ax to our program?  Cheating will get us nowhere (see Pell)

We aren't exactly saints anyway rolleyes

I don't know if I go as far as Alum, but I think at the very least we need to start over signing and cutting the dead weight.

Let the NCAA hit us.  Who cares?  Was it really that bad for Ohio State?  They may go undefeated for the second straight year.  USC was 11-2 2 years ago and have only lost 3 games this year, thanks to getting rid of Kiffin.  I'd take either of their records over ours.

lol  The death penalty is a thing of the past.  Even Penn State has a better record than us this year.

Re: Gators Should Stop Playing "Fair"

Kajun you are right on the money.  Those loss of scholarships from the Charley Pell years put a hurting on us from 1986 - 89.  At some positions we had no quality back-up players.  We couldn't compete because we had no depth.

RE: Gators Should Stop Playing "Fair"

I almost NEVER agree with Alums posts...but I understand what he means here. I think some of this may be why Urban left. He was not on a level playing field with Bama. And I do not just mean oversigning...but that is a HUGE part of it.

Re: Gators Should Stop Playing "Fair"

There is a difference between skating the edge of the rules (which most programs do) and blatantly breaking them which is what Alum is purposing.  Living on the edge with problematic players is one of the issues we had at the end of Meyers tenure (beginning of Muschamps)...to the extent that one of our former players is now on trial for murder, and many others have been arrested for drug issues.
How does this help the program?  eek1

You want to win? Cheat.

You want to be a university, don't.

Alabama made the choice.

Re: Gators Should Stop Playing "Fair"

I'd love to hear what someone from outside the SEC would say if they read this thread.  Up here in New Jersey, everybody thinks all the teams in the SEC cheat now.  And I get grief from friends because of all the arrests that UF players have had over the last bunch of years.  To suggest that we aren't winning now because we try toohard to follow the rules would make people up here crack up...

Man...do you not understand the benifits of oversigning? Those idiots up north also believe EVERY team in the SEC oversigns. I can damn sure tell you WE dont...but I wish we did. And for getting grief...this only happens when you are winning. Your friends have been jealous. Consider it flattery. And unfortunately...you wont be getting to much grief this year I bet. The principal of this thread is....we should be on a level playing field with our SEC opponents. We are NOT at this time.
