Did Justin Cobbs deserve that technical?

You bet he did.  After schooling Garrett Sims in the key for the fourth time, he scores and yells "bitch" as in "your my bitch and I'm going to do this to you all night long."

Reason for care: Robert Thurmon is losing vision on his defensive assignment, especially Alashou (?, #55 who was called for the unintentional head butt... did you see the way he cradled Martin Smith after nearly running him over... no malace in this individual).

Thurmon, on offense, is an unexpected gift.  He has to maintain vision on his man or big teams will abuse us.

Re: Did Justin Cobbs deserve that technical?

The 2nd technical was called on Monty, but it was actually Jay John who instigated it, by going out on the court to try to call a timeout.  The reason why he was over-effusive about it is because Monty tried to call a timeout on the previous made bucket, but the refs didn't acknowledge it.

Those two technicals could have easily lost the game for Cal.

Don't be an idiot

This was a classic, high quality game.  The "bitch" was not molicious; it was competitive.  And you could tell it was on from then on.

It was the correct call, unlike the accidental head-butt by Ashaolu.  There was nothing malicious in his move after the basket.  If anything it should have been a deadball foul.  But, the calls are what they are.

It was a contest in which Devoe Joseph had a career night.  33 against Cal's defense.  That was a performance matched by Cobbs.

It came down to the supporting cast.  Cal plays precision ball.  Well coached, cool under pressure, confident.

If Cal has a weakness, it's post defense, but Oregon could only muster 16 points among three starters.  It should have been more because Cal's other two guards (Jorge and Crabbe) combined for that (on a poor shooting night to boot) while Kamp and Kravish combined for 33.  Cal won the battle in the paint, and that's where the game was won.

Yes he had a couple lapses (mostly when hedging or providing help defense), but I thought our post defense improved considerably with Thurman in the game. They were using their weight to just shove Kravish aside (no calls) and Kamp, due to his height/knee limitations, is not able to defend the backdoor lob at all, then to top it off got into foul trouble. With Thurman in the game, Kamp could stay out of the fray a bit which was critical because we needed his senior leadership at the end when he finished them off.

I think Thurman is a key to how far the Bears will go this post-season.
