Knapp named All-American

Cal’s junior catcher was tabbed as a third-team All-American by Perfect Game USA today.

Knapp was earlier picked first-team All-Pac-12 and was selected in the second round by the Philadelphia Phillies and was the 53rd pick overall in the June 6 Major League Amateur Draft.

Knapp’s All-America selection was the 42nd in school history and the 11th since David Esquer became head coach in 2000. Cal has had an All-America selection in each of the past four years (Jusin Jones and Tony Renda Freshmen All-Americans in 2010, Kyle Porter Freshman All-American in 2011 and Tony Renda All-American in 2012).

One of 38 collegiate player picked in the first two rounds of the MLB draft this year, Knapp batted a team-leading .350 (third in Pac-12) with a team-high 16 doubles, eight home runs and 41 RBI in 2013. He also hit a team-best .392 (20-for-51) with runners in scoring position. Other highlights in 2013 for Knapp included hitting three-run homers against league foes Washington State and Oregon, and knocking in the game-winning RBI in the 11th inning versus Michigan in the 2013 season-opener.

For his Cal career, Knapp has a .294 average (142-for-483) with 35 doubles, 14 home runs and 82 RBI in 137 games.

Knapp is the son of Mike Knapp, a standout catcher for the Golden Bears in 1985-86. Knapp's younger brother, Aaron, has signed a letter of intent and will join David Esquer's program in the fall of 2013.

Knapp is the 67th Cal baseball player drafted and the eighth second rounder in Esquer’s tenure. Cal has had second round picks in the MLB draft in each of the past three years with Knapp joining Renda in 2012 (Washington Nationals) and Erik Johnson in 2011 (Chicago White Sox).
