Frank Cruz out, Dan Hubbs in ...

USC Fires Cruz, Promotes Hubbs

USC has fired manager Frank Cruz, promoting former Cal pitching coach and associate HC Dan Hubbs from that same spot on Cruz's staff to the head seat.

Hubbs was on the phone with Cal HC David Esquer immediately following Cruz's initial suspension on Saturday, asking for advice on taking over the helm. Esquer was convinced it would all blow over soon, but it looks as though he will be facing his old right-hand man as equals when the Trojans come to Evans Diamond on March 28 for the Pac-12 opener for the Bears. On that subject, Esquer talked to me last week about that game, which is slated to be the first ever night game in the 80-year history of the ballpark:

“I think he’ll have a great appreciation," Esquer said. "He knows how long we’ve waited. I know he’s known how long we’ve waited, and how much we’ve really felt that that was a necessity in our program, so I think he will appreciate us finally getting that done. I think he’ll understand how big a deal that is for us as a program, and personally, as just a team and a coach.”
