How is 7'1 Geoffrey Frid progressing under Monte?

This kid seems to have very little basketball experience...but he's on the team for three reasons:

1) he is 7'1
2) he is 7'1
3) he is 7'1

Re: How is 7'1 Geoffrey Frid progressing under Monte?

He's not going to see the floor this season.  From the reports I've seen, he's got a lot of work to do.  I watched a highlight tape of him and it showed him scoring a lot of uncontested put-backs.  That's good, you want that in a big man.  What you might also want is someone who can score in traffic.  The reports criticize him for playing below the rim.  I can live with that if it means that he's not picking up fouls and is playing in position.  On his highlight tape there were a few blocked shots, but I saw a lot of reaching to make those blocks so I suspect he picked up a fair number of fouls in high school.

What we do know is that Monty is among the best in developing talent.  Who would have thought that Thurman was going to be a force this season.  Before Cal, he had just two seasons playing organized basketball... at any level.  Last season he was a novelty, someone we rooted for but all of us recognized limitations.  The dude has made progress!  If Frid makes half the progress that Thurman has made, he will see 8-10 minutes a game next season and become a starter in two.

Thanks.

At 7'1 there's a lot of length to work with.  Frid doesn't really have to reach out much to block shots - or even block shots...he simply has to get in the way of shots.

I trust that before it's all said and done Monty can get some quality minutes out of this kid; if he ends up being a starter, all the better!

Go Bears!!!

Frid already has much better skills and athleticism than Thurman (who I was an early fan and booster of), besides being a legit 7'1". I think with Monty's coaching and big man usual development (including strength training) he has tremendous upside. I fully expect him to replace Thurman (graduation) in the rotation next year and be a starter the following year (with Solomon's departure) as a red shirt sophomore. I will not put a limit on how good he can be before he leaves Cal.

The little bit of video that I saw showed: 1) he seems to have a soft shooting touch; 2) he can move around on the floor without tripping over his own feet. Given his size, those are elements to build upon. I saw Darrell Imhoff as a freshman and what he ultimately became and, while I don't think you could take a project like Imhoff to AA in today's game, I think Frid  is starting at a higher plane than Darrell did.

Great call calumnus.  Must've been all those years sitting behind John Wooden that gave you such keen basketball insight.

Oh, by the way, he's leaving.

LOL. Well, in my defense, that was before we landed Rooks. It will be interesting to see where he ends up and how he does elsewhere.
