Re: 6 CAL Bears picked in 2012 NFL Draft Post Rating (2 votes)

I thought our midieval football facilities would make it so Cal would never be able to compete for or develop NFL calibur talent on a consistent basis.  I guess Kendricks, Schwartz, Anger, Jones, Guyton and Campbell didnt get  the memo that the only route from Berkeley to the NFL was through a new $200 million weight room

Bottom line is that Cal has had  SEC type talent the past 3-4 years, but has barely broken the .500 mark during this same period of time.  This program is full of NFL type talent and Cal should place about the same numbers of players in the NFL next season as well.

Time for the underachieving and excuses to end

Here's the ESPN Pac12 blog review of the NFL draft

By  Ted Miller | ESPN.com

[+] Enlarge
Chris Polk
Joe Nicholson/US Presswire Despite rushing for over 4,000 career yards, star Washington RB Chris Polk went undrafted.

California led the way in the Pac-12 for what was a poor showing in the 2012 NFL draft, with just 28 total players selected. It seemed perfectly reasonable to project more than 40 picks a few weeks and months ago.

In 2011, 37 players were drafted, one fewer than the SEC. This year, the SEC led the way with 42 draft picks. The Big Ten was second with 41 and the ACC was third with 31. The 10-team Big 12 had 25, which actually puts it ahead of the Pac-12 by a per-team measure.

California had six players drafted, tied for the second-most by Cal, which also had six players picked in both the 1977 and 2008 drafts. A school-record 10 Cal players were chosen in 1952.

There were plenty of negatives from the weekend, starting with Washington RB Chris Polk, who some had projected going as early as the second round, not getting picked. The reported explanation is concern that Polk has a shoulder problem. Polk and his horrible, no-good shoulder rushed for an often punishing 4,049 yards in his career, the second-most in school history.

The Philadelphia Eagles committed grand larceny when they signed him as a free agent.

Other negatives: Character counts. The Pac-12 bad boys, Arizona State LB Vontaze Burfict and Oregon CB  Cliff Harris, both once viewed as potential first-round picks, weren't drafted.

Oregon QB  Darron Thomas, who surprised many when he opted to enter the draft a year early, went undrafted. (Meanwhile, in Eugene, Ducks fans watched redshirt freshman Marcus Mariotadominate the spring game in the competition with Bryan Bennett to replace Thomas).

Other undrafted notables: Arizona State WR Gerell Robinson, Oregon S  Eddie Pleasant, Oregon State WR  James Rodgers, Stanford WR  Chris Owusu, Stanford S  Delano Howell and Washington WR Jermaine Kearse

Here's the conference draft tally. UCLA and Washington State had no players selected.

California: 6
Oregon: 4
Stanford: 4
Arizona: 3

Re: 6 CAL Bears picked in 2012 NFL Draft

We've had SEC-type talent.  We just haven't had enough of it.  Our talent level has been no better than about fourth or fifth best in the conference over the past few years if recruiting rankings are worth anything.  And, if they are not, then our coaches are doing something right in finding players that have been under-rated by the "experts".

Re: 6 CAL Bears picked in 2012 NFL Draft Post Rating (1 vote)

Apparently, NFL scouts feel that Cal had SEC type talent this year, and plenty of it.  I'll take their opinions over meaningless recruiting rankings any day of the week.

Outside of Alabama, one would have to say that  this seasons Cal's senior class compares favorably with any of the other 11 teams in the SEC. Dont forget we still have guys like Keenan Allen, DeAndre Coleman, Isi Sofele and Matt Summers Gaving who will more than likely be drafted next season.  That means almost 1/2 of last seasons starters will eventually play in the NFL.  Most SEC teams couldnt make this same claim, and only USC could place any more pro players in our league

The numbers speak for themselves.  Below are the numbers of SEC players drafted by NFL teams this season

Alabama - 8
Georgia - 7
South Carolina - 6
Cal - 6
LSU - 5
Arkansas - 4
Miss State - 3
Florida - 2
Kentucky - 2
Tennessee -2
Auburn - 2
Vanderbilit -  2
Ole Miss - 1

If our coaching is so great at finding players that have been "under-rated" by the experts, then why cant they win with these same players?  What this tells me is that with all the moaning about facilites, Cal has been quite adept at bringing in and developing top talent.  We also have had some excellent posistion coaches who have helped move this process along.  What is obviously missing is leadership at the top to put it all together.

Re: 6 CAL Bears picked in 2012 NFL Draft Post Rating (1 vote)

Cal has 6 players taken in the draft this year...

...4 in 2011
...3 in 2010
...3 in 2009.
...6 in 2008

...something tells me that the upper tier SEC schools have 5+ players taken year in, year out.  However, I could be wrong...perhaps someone has time to look into this.

Nonetheless, yes, Cal had/has talent. (...not to take anything from Campbell or Guyton - but they ALMOST didn't get selected, given that they were taken in the 7th round)/

Moreover, the fact that Jones was the 1st WR since Jackson/Hawkins in the 2008 sums up Cal's inefficiences on the O-side of the ball, passing-wise, in the 2008-11 seasons.

Lastly, havings one's punter taken in the 3rd round is kind of a interesting scenario...Cal had a great punter, sure, but that somewhat indirectly indicates that Cal couldn't move the ball on offense that well...

Agree.  And when was the last time Cal had a QB drafted?----not that JT bears no responsibility for this.

History has shown that the development of our players are unsurpassed in the conference

Talent isn't the problem in Strawberry canyon. It's gameday coaching and execution. Worst in the conference, maybe in the history of the conference.
