Eight of Cal's opponents are nationally ranked (top 50)! Good luck Cal..er...I mean...

good luck Coach Dykes!

The good news is if Cal has really improved it can quickly break into the above national

ranking by initially beating Northwestern and following up by crushing sac St. But, if Cal

loses this early game and these rankings have any credibility, it looks like we'll probably

get an unnerving  preview of how the Oregon State and BYU games will turn out. As

for Northwestern's AP ranking, I think its way too high given that they have lost two key

experienced players.

The only comment that I have about these rankings is I can't image Wazzu and 'zona

being that far behind, if in deed they are in fact actually behind, the likes of Utah St., Nevada,

or La Lafayette...or...or Navy?

Like I've proclaimed before (with my head bowed), thank the Gods for Sac St.!!!!

By the same token, I've seen Cal ranked #67 (or thereabouts), so, really, how scary can number 50 be?

That's my point, number 50 may not be that scary. That is, such ranking may not be scary

especially to Wazzu or 'zona, but for Cal it is very scary because Cal will have to go through

Wazzu and 'zona to get ranked #50. Like I believe, at this point in Cal's developing Program,

I think getting through such Pac 12 teams is not a foregone conclusion such that  it makes us fans

comfortable about pooh poohing the likely possibility of another 1-11 football season. Thus,
such a season would not only mean the #50 ranking would be scary but for Cal it would be a nightmare!

ESPN rated Cal's schedule as 3rd most difficult in the country.  IIRC, the Pac-12 had like 5 teams in the top 10-12 of most difficult schedules for "14.  Arguably, Cal had the most difficult schedule in the country last year.  Dykes must feel snake-bit when it comes to the scheduling with such a young team.

Had to laugh at the graphic on TV yesterday when the AP Top 25 was announced.  Auburn plays like 7 of the top 25 on their schedule, but good ole Ohio St. only plays 1.  Never fails.  I take it that the BIG "10" is down this year and the SEC has a lot of teams in the top 25 to explain the discrepancy.  Meyer has to love the scheduling done by his predecessor.

Of course all of this is perception which is what pissed me off for so many years that the SEC (schedule easy conference) never played anyone with the argument that they had to rest up for conference play.  Therefore, there was never much chance that outcomes on the field would change the perception.  Although the conference as a whole has scheduled some difficult games in recent years, they still only play eight conference games which allows another game against East Jesus State to pad their records.

The issue with the Big 10 is no different from any other conference during down years.  What matters is the out of conference scheduling.  There are six power conferences and four playoff spots.  Hopefully conferences will be penalized for scheduling easy.

While a few of the SEC teams have started scheduling more difficult ooc opponents, they still have the annoying tendency to schedule at least one of their cupcake games a couple weeks before the season ends to get a breather going into the rivalry and conference championship games.  Most schools, especially the Pac-12 with 9 conference games, don't have that luxury.  If you are going to a playoff system, it's time to equalize the power conferences with the same rules and have either 8 or 9 conference games, not both depending on the conference.
