Sad event resurfaces

Ted Agu would have been a fifth year senior this season but died during a supervised workout.  Now his family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.  I hope the family can find closure regardless of the outcome.

I covered the way the players are dealing with his death in the front page story, but Jeff Faraudo got the scoop on the wrongful death suit:

The official athletic department website has a "Ted Agu 1992-2014" banner across the top of the football schedule page.

I understand that there is a test for this kind of heart defect. Maybe this lawsuit has legal merit.

Re: Sad event resurfaces

This bothers me a little and I'm sure my comments may bother some here.  It appears that both Agu and his family knew that the sickle-cell trait was present. It doesn't sound like the thickening of the heart was well known to anyone until the autopsy was done which seems common in these cases.  While the family couldn't force Ted to not play, maybe they should have made their concerns known to him and the team prior to his death instead of now.  When teams are out on a training exercise such as this, it isn't always immediately apparent that an athlete is under duress.  There's a lot of bitching, moaning and dragging going on with pedestrian workouts like these.

Maybe it's time that athletes be barred from further competitive play if there is any doubt about their health or there are any signs that potentially negative health conditions already exist.

All said, the lawsuit does not affect the honor one pays to the perseverance, work ethic, and desire Ted Agu exhibited.

Agreed. Ted had nothing to say about filing this lawsuit.

I will still cheer loudly when I hear his name or see his number. I hope the lawsuit does not result in any misplaced boos in that situation, regardless of how anyone may feel about the lawsuit.
