Uniform Countdown: Argue, Debate, Discuss!

http://california.scout.com/2/1279457.html

Now that I've started the ball rolling with my countdown of the best and worst Cal football uniforms of all time, it's your turn.

Am I wrong? How wrong am I? Is this really the worst Cal football uniform ever? This is the thread to let me (and each other) have it.

Which uniform is next on my list? Which is next on yours? Go at it!

Cool series, Ryan.  Will your #1 will somehow include a fedora?

I'm glad Cal will be trying something new, as I'm not a fan of the current design, or the constant costume changes.  With this iteration, I'm hoping for something simple and classic - that we will stick with for a long, long time.

If the goal is to build a brand, we need to stop changing.  If the goal is to try to sell a new jersey to consumers every year - then I guess we've had the right strategy. I know which I prefer.

Today's edition (and oh, how I wish it were April Fools) deals with a style many of us out-grow after at the very least, freshman year of high school: The just-peed-my-pants look.

OSKI the mascot Post Rating (2 votes)

Since we are on the subject of remaking the athletic program and its look, what about Oski?

With no disrespect to traditionalist, (I am in mid-40s), listening to the non-CAL fans at the NCAA hoops tournament, we heard a number of put-downs on Oski.

From "He's old man inside who barely walks."
to "No wonder CAL sucks, their mascot looks like he is on a laxative."
The best one I heard "Ted (the movie) strikes more fear than that mascot"

Seriously, that costume needs a makeover as well.

GO BEARS!

Re: OSKI the mascot

I've always been one to remake him into a total badass. Not like the preppy Joe Bruin, though. The new Oski, I feel, should look like more of a brawler, not a body builder. Then again, if I really had my druthers, he'd be a real Goddamned bear on a leash that may or may not be strong enough to hold him back.

Today's entry is bound to be controversial, as No. 8 in the countdown is, appropriately enough, the Aaron Rodgers-era uniforms:

Re: OSKI the mascot

I was just reading on the reason why the Dolphins changed their logo.  I couldn't word it any better.  I wish our CAL marketing group were reading this.

"So what does the redesigned logo tell us about the team’s new aesthetic direction? First and foremost, it’s a further nail in the coffin of the “cute sporty mascot” style that dominated sports design in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. But while most animal-based teams have upgraded to fiercer-looking logo characters—lots of furrowed brows and gritted teeth, supposedly to intimidate the competition—the Dolphins have staked out a middle ground with their new mark. Neither playful nor piqued, the new logo feels mature. It’s like a young pup that has come of age. It would make a great logo for an aquarium, although we’ll have to wait to see the new uniforms before we can assess how well the image works for a professional football team."

GO BEARS!

You should have linked a song girl in a sweater in the "when you think of USC you think of..."  section.

In a universe that includes the Tree, I find it hard to really worry very much about Oski being an embarassment to mascots.  Most mascots are dumb and for the kids.

Clunky -- that would only work if I phrased it as, "When Greg thinks of USC, he thinks of ..."

As someone who really likes the early 50's traditional unis, I'm now hoping the new unis can match all the flair of Oregon's unis, but if they've got that cammy crap we're seeing more of these days, I'm going to be really upset.

Like the damn Zubaz stripes on the NCAA unis? Ugh, if that happens, I quit.
