Egu Scholarship ultimatum?

Egu Scholarship ultimatum?

Was told today that Victor Egu was informed by the staff that he either needs to switch to DE, otherwise we don't have a scholarship spot for him. This would be a huge blow as Egu is a huge sleeper in this class and was arguably the best LB at De La Salle this year. FWIW, Austin Hooper, Stanford's new TE commit who is gonna be the next in line at the new TE U, and Egu's teammate the last 4 years at DLS, was pretty much dreading going up against him and called him a monster in the making.

This came directly from the mouths of multiple DLS kids. I'm hoping this isn't the case and that it doesn't play out or that the situation changes, but figured I'd share.

I'm very happy that we have a coaching staff dedicated to playing guys where it will help the team the most. No more "you can play wherever you want" offers. Cal needs players who are willing to do what the team needs from them, not guys who only want to play the position they like.

If true, I personally think the ultimatum is stupid. Egu is a LB and has the frame and athleticism to play the SAM in a 4-3 and deal with the TE. I see no reason whatsoever to demand absolutes at this point.

Re: Egu Scholarship ultimatum?

We have no idea how the conversation went down. It could be that Egu is saying "I only want to play LB and I want a guarantee that I won't be asked to play DL". From the Cal perspective, the narrative should be "We want football players who want to do whatever the team needs" instead of talking about positions. If a player is dead set on playing a particular position, Cal doesn't need that mentality in the program.

I agree.  Don't know a thing about this particular person and how good he is, but the days of players telling coaches what position they are playing and then dictating that after they arrive must end.  I'm still not thrilled about how they are trying to force a 4-3 system on a team that won't have the personnel to play it next year, but we need to be upfront about who determines what position players play.

I'm not going to take exception to what DLS players said or argue about Egu's upside, but I saw DLS play a few games and Egu was virtually non-existent, especially compared to Hutchings and Hooper.  It's clear Egu is not as developed physically as those two guys, however.

Just confirmed it from Egu himself. Yale and Colorado the only other two schools talking to him as of right now. FWIW, watching him work out with Hutch and Hoop, they're all freaks.
