Re: Pac-12 Schedule Announced

First thoughts:

Season finale is Big Game. Like it damn well should be.

No weeknight games. Also, like it should be.

A bye between non-conference and conference play -- something Cal will desperately need after facing Northwestern and Ohio State.

The road schedule is going to be rough. @Oregon, @UCLA, @Washington all lined up in the middle of the year, plus a game at home against Oregon State at home, with only Washington State sandwiched in to provide maybe some kind of time to breathe, could make or break Sonny Dykes's first season.

Happy in general with this schedule. Stanford being the last game, and a bye between non-conference and Pac-12 play are big, to your point.

But this sure is a tough schedule. Considering how hard it is for any coach to be successful right from the start, I will tolerate a non-stellar season so long as we beat USC...

I am seeing a 6 win 6 loss season an improvement over last year

WE beat NU! And if QB looks great upset OSU. We nearly beat them at Columbus. I suspect PAC-12 will be tough.

Mora caught a break this year. Sonny gets no such favor.

Take a look at Dan's analysis - http://california.scout.com/2/1256732.html

First year expectation.

Mora had a very favorable schedule this year which helped him out. Obviously, the ucla fans think Mora's god as a result (well, a demi-god, after losing twice to Stanford and looking lousy in the bowl game).

Dykes has a rough schedule. I hope Cal fans will cut him some slack and not set the bar too high. As noted above, 6 and 6 would be about right as a realistic goal. Obviously, you want to win every game, but we shouldn't get carried away.

You look at Leach's season with WSU. For the most part, it was a train wreck. but beating Washington for the Apple Cup saved the whole season for Leach.

Would you all be satisfied if Dykes beat the Furds and otherwise had a 50/50 record?

With so many changes and unknowns at this point, how can you assess Cal at all?

Based on what we know to date my best estimate would be 6-6 record as a reasonable goal for this team

Do you have any thoughts on the teams potential for next season will they be better than three wins?

I see at best 6-6, but 4-8 is a real possibility.  So let's just call it 5-7 and no bowl.

I honestly don't know.  It's arguably the toughest schedule in the conference.  They play 5 teams in the top 25 early poll for next season including #'s 2, 3 and 4 (depending on what poll you look at).  I could see maybe 3-5 wins unless this new staff works some miracles.  Gotta shore up both lines before anything will happen.

Re: Pac-12 Schedule Announced

No offense to history, but the static games against UCLA and USC will kill us under the new Pac12 alignment.

What would alums rather see:

1)  Cal in the Rose Bowl
2)  Annual cross division games with UCLA and USC

I'd argue that 2) makes 1) several orders of magnitude more difficult when compared to our Pac12 competitors. (I know somebody will bring up Stanfurd as the contrary example, but they set the table for excellence prior to the conference expansion with Harbaugh).
