What's your take on this guy?  Seems like it would be a good fit for the offense

Former HC, interim HC, knows this type of offense and what it needs. I think it's a solid hire, not overwhelming, not underwhelming.

Tech fan here.  Thomsen is a good coach.  Was former HC at Abilene Christian U, and had a great record there.  Was 51-26 at ACU, and had great offenses there.  Tech fans were hoping to retain him, but we are looking to hire Lee Hays, another good coach.

Thomsen left ACU to take a job at Ariz. St, but left there before even coaching one game to take the OL job at Tech.  People who are familiar with this spread offense want to hire him, because he knows it, and knows how to teach it.

He will be Tech's interim HC for their bowl game.

I'm an ACU grad and Tech fan/season ticket holder.  You guys got a good one with Coach Thomsen. What Chris did at ACU was pretty remarkable. The school had not had a good run in the football program since the late 70's and he came in and totally turned that around. Made several consecutive trips to the D-II playoffs and set some crazy offensive records on the way as well as put quite a few of his ACU players in the league. He builds good relationships with his recruits as well and a lot of them refer back to how they and their parents just knew he was the type of person to follow through with what he was pitching. He is a high charachter individual. I hate to see him leave Tech, but that's the way the business side of it goes. Thrilled to see him catch on with Sonny at Cal as I think that will be a good fit for all involved. I'll definitely be tuned into Cal football next year and hoping for the best for you guys, that is unless you meet up with Tech along the way! Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. We still owe you guys one after the beatdown you gave us in 2004.

Re: Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com says new OL coach will be

I would agree with Harrell. Just because Thomsen isn't known around the D1 programs doesn't mean he isn't a great addition to the staff.

I still remember when Leach's first staff was assembled at Tech, and I saw a guy named Art Briles as his RB's coach. Leach was forced to hire him from the HS ranks and he's turned out to be fairly decent.

I'm not going to say that Thomsen is of the same caliber, but he's known in Texas like Briles. I think if you guys give Sonny a chance, then he could do good things.

You won't ever be known as a defensive team, but it looks like the Pac is going the way of the Big12...and that's offense. Sonny, Thomsen and Franklin knows offense, so you should be in good hands.

This happened when Kelley was hired at UO, and continued with AS U, and the hiring of Rod at AU. Your admin saw this and kept up with Sonny, and Franklin.

That's why your admin hired Dykes, and he's a great coach/recruiter. His only issue might be to get into the Cali schools

This is my second favorite hire on the new staff (after Franklin). Thomsen has demonstrated elite results vs his competition. I can't wait to see what Cal can accomplish on offense.

There's still one hire to go on D, but that side of the ball is definitely "wait and see" mode in terms of what they can accomplish.

Do you mean LB?  My understanding is that Buh will coach the LB's himself.

Re: Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com says new OL coach will be

Dykes has said that there is one more slot for an assistant because Franklin will be coaching QBs and Buh will be coaching LBs. There are currently nine coaches on staff (Dykes, Franklin, Buh, Tommerdahl, Ingram, Stewart, Sacks, Likens, Thomsen) and there is room for one more. What Dykes has said is that they might have an extra assistant on the defensive line, for instance, a DT coach.

I am a Georgia Bulldog fan currently living in Abilene, Texas.  When the Dawgs are not on TV, I attended a lot of Abilene Christian football games and listened to Thomsen on local TV and radio before he moved on to Tech.

We are just down the road from Lubbock so I have also watched and read a lot about him during his short time as line and interim head coach. There is a thread on the Tech scout board thanking Thomsen for holding the program together after TT's sudden departure. During his short time as head coach he had to appoint an interim Offensive Coordinator, dismiss a RB coach who was recruiting for another school, leave three players behind for the bowl trip due to rules violations, in addition to preparation for the bowl game.

In short, I agree with other Texas Tech and ACU posters who have attested to Thomsen's competence and character as evidenced by the job he did at both ACU and tech and the number of players he has placed in the NFL. You have hired an outstanding coach who knows a lot about the offensive system used by Dykes and Franklin.

The only possible negative I can think of is his lack of experience recruiting California high schools. He knows Texas and is held in high regard by Texas HS coaches but his only experience in California has been recruiting JC players. This said, he relates exceptionally well to recruits so I expect him to establish himself quickly.
Congrats.

Re: Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com says new OL coach will be

Coaching Search reports:
Cal
: Sources tell me Troy offensive line coach Zach Yenser has accepted the offensive line job at Cal. Yenser served this past season as an offensive grad assistant at LA Tech.

What?  I thought Thomsen was a done deal?

Any insights, Bears?

Talked to a source in Ruston yesterday that said Yenser turned down the OL job at La Tech and the job at Troy, and that his father expected that he'd be coming to Cal.

Thomsen was named rb coach last year at asu and quit a week later to take ol job at TT, at the time he said he wanted to stay in Texas and wanted to coach ol rather than rb. Now he's back at asu coaching rb's . weird

If he agreed to join Sonny's staff and backed out, I agree...it does raise questions.

However, Thomsen said after the Car Care Bowl he had not received a contract from Cal and was stil trying to finalize his plans for next year.
