new DC

Footballscoop.com reported late last night/early this morning that Andy Buh was given a huge offer from Sonny Dykes, and will be Cal's new DC.

Re: new DC

Wait a minute.  Someone told me in chat last night that Buh was taking the LB coach job at Arkansas and all signs pointed to Aranda.

If Buh is true, I'm sure a lot of us will be disappointed.

Re: new DC

He had offers for Arky & Wisc and was going to go to Ark, but Dykes pulled him away.
I posted this on the premium board, and while it may not be the hire we all wanted (Aranda), he really improved Nevada's D, is a proven recruiter, and is a great LBs coach.

Re: new DC

Considering Ark already has a DC, it is safe to assume he would have his same role at Ark with a possible assistant DC tag thrown on.
Interesting little tidbit for recruiting: former Cal target Tyler Foreman has a pretty close relationship with Buh.

Indeed.  I am not too thrilled about the hire with all the hoopla from the get-go about the importance of a good DC hire.  This hire does not appear to be a proven DC hire to match the caliber of Dyke's offense.  But I am sure Dyke knows what he is doing.

I was bearinla but changed my handle as I moved to OC.

Re: new DC

Thanks.  Is it possible he's been offered the Cal lber coach job and not DC?  That would probably only happen if the new DC has already accepted and just waiting for bowl game to close out.  I'd like to think that the Cal job is attractive enough to attract someone with other Def coord job options and not just lber coach opportunities.

If it is Buh, while I inately would have prefered more of an up and coming DC candidate, I do like like his experience, especially being on the Wisconsin staff, which seems to do things the right way.

Re: new DC

If Buh is coming along with Stewart, it'll be a reunion of sorts. The two coached at Cal from 2000-01, with Stewart being in Berkeley for a four-year stretch. Stewart helped produce Deltha O'Neal and Nnamdi Asomugha. Both have recruited the West Coast quite heavily in the past, with Buh in particular even getting a visit from Darius Allensworth out to Wisconsin -- tough to do for a WC DB.

According to our very own Greg Biggins ...
"If Buh lands at  # Cal, look for them to make a strong run at Tyler Foreman, recruited him to  # Wisconsin and feeling is he wants out of SoCal"

According to your colleagu Grant Marek at your former residence at bearterritory.net, he claimed he talked to several sources who have said that Buh has agreed in principle to be Cal's new DC. Ryan can you confirm this or are you still investigating.

I'll do him one better. My source says it's a done deal. Still waiting on official confirmation.

Official word is that Cal cannot confirm the hire, and that as of this morning, it was not a done deal. Things could very well have changed, but that's what I've heard.

That's why your Gorcey. Always providing us detailed information on what's really going on. If and when Buh is announced; what's your thought on him being our DC and do you think he can help this defense stop other teams.

Re: new DC

So I take it this would mean Aranda turned it down and we went forward?

Hey Nole, contrary to the spin coming from Cal, that sounds like how it actually went down.

What is the spin from Cal? Associated Press is reporting that Aranda turned down the Cal job.

http://www.mercurynews.com/cal...ive-coordinator

From what I can tell, it looks like Aranda was talking to Kingsbury in the days before Kingsbury was officially hired. On our Rivals board, the editors posted a "hot board" of potential coaches if Kingsbury got hired. It was almost all young guys that played at Tech. The forum went into meltdown mode about how it would be a disaster.

Then one of the regular posters on the board who has pretty strong connections to our boosters tried to calm everyone down by asking if we would like a DC with such and such stats (top 10 scoring D, etc.). People started guessing if he was talking about Aranda and he confirmed that he was. This was about two days before we officially hired Kingsbury.

It looked to me like Cal did not offer Aranda until reports came out that Kingsbury was going after him. Kinda feels like Sonny didn't think of Aranda until after the Tech reports came out, which is kind of embarrassing since they coached together. I don't know, maybe Sonny was just so focused on the receivers that he didn't notice the grad assistant Aranda on defense. That would pretty much fit with the culture we had under Leach, who was entirely focused on offense and didn't pay any attention to defense.

Anyway, to me it looks like Kingsbury already had a commitment from Aranda before Sonny offered him the position at Cal. It might be similar to how Sonny decided to stick with his commitment to Cal instead of jumping to the suddenly available Tech job. If that's how it played out, then both guys deserve credit for showing integrity and sticking with their prior commitments. This is a dirty business as we found out with the Tuberville situation.

Re: new DC

The "spin from Cal" is that Buh was Sonny's first choice so never offered Aranda.

Interesting. You wouldn't think the AP is wrong, but who knows?

I sure have mixed feelings about this whole situation if it went down as TTUfirebird suggests.

Very disappointed Dykes wouldn't have asked Aranda ASAP, even before he was hired at Cal.  At the same time, am glad that Aranda gave his commitment to go to TT before he was offered the job by Cal.  I call B.S. on the fact Dykes never offered him and Buh was the #1 choice.

My real question is would Aranda have gone to Cal if Cal offered him their DC job first?

If it's a money issue, Tech has an advantage since the Oakland metro area has a cost of living about 50% higher than Lubbock. How much is Dykes getting from you guys? We are paying Kingsbury $2m per year, which would be the equivalent of $3m in Berkeley.

As far as your mixed feelings, I feel bad for you guys. This Buh fellow is questionable to me. Someone on our board said that his mentor is Lyle Setencich. Our fanbase really doesn't like Lyle. He has a "read and react" system that doesn't work very well. Leach hired him in 2003 because Lyle got him his first coaching job. Then he was really loyal to Lyle over the years. But it got to the point where even Leach knew he had to fire the guy. We let him go after a meltdown against  Oklahoma State in Stillwater during the 2007 season.
