Source - Sonny Dykes and Greg Roman frontrunners
both will be contacted in the next 2-3 days. My source is telling me that Dykes is #1 on the list and they are going to be meeting with him shortly.
Been told by another source that talk over the past week was the Bears were puting together a group to meet with Dykes. And I expect that to happen this week.
Stay tuned

Why in the world would Greg Roman leave an OC position at a legit Super Bowl contender to go to a second-tier college program?

Re: Are you kidding me? (2 votes)
Sonny Dykes is not what we need. We need a coach who will run a Harbagh style pro offense like he ran at Furd. Roman would work. The best college offense is a pro-style offense with a mixture of t-formation and shot gun in some passing situations. Play action passing with the qb under center is what we needed when we were in the red zone. No gimmicks. Just hard nose football with an equal mixture of passing and running. My picks are Gruden, Herm Edwards, Ron Rivera, Roman, and Charlie Strong. Not in that order, but I'd be very happy with any one of them. All those guys would be very acceptable to anyone we would be recruiting.

High school kids like running the spread and it has become an attraction in recruiting as much as I hate it.

Well... (1 vote)
Maybe Greg Roman wouldn't leave the 49ers but your comment about a "second-tier program" is lacking in historical perspective. It wasn't long ago we (furd) were envious of Cal's winning record.

Roman will get a pro job.
Gotta love the irony if your AD hires Sonny DYKES.

Re: Well...CAL IS SECOND-TIER (3 votes)
In the last 25 years Cal has - 7 winning seasons in the Pac-10/12 - finished in the top 3 in the Pac-12 only 4 times
An average team in the conference would have at least 10 winning seasons in conference and 6 top 3 finishes. Cal is woefully short on both, and hence is second-tier.

Maybe because he could make his own mark without being tied to Harbaugh? Do you know that he has no aspirations to be a head college coach? Again, why the interest here? Do you not get enough attention at your home / work / family?

The spread is what really hurt Tedford.
Right now, there isn't much answer to stopping the spread. It's like the Wishbone back in the 60's-80's. Fun to watch, but will not help them to the next level.
I think the most realistic choice would probably be Hue Jackson. He's available and probably wouldn't cost that much. Even though I think he would be a downgrade to Tedford.

Re: Source - Sonny@CATCH22 YOU COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG ROMAN (1 vote)
WANTED STANFORD BADLY AND WAS IN THE FINAL TWO. WE HOPE YOU DON'T TAKE HIM, BECAUSE HE COULD START THE ROMAN EMPIRE AT KAL, AND BE A REAL PROBLEM FOR THE REST OF THE CONFERENCE.

I want Gary Anderson from Utah State. He has shown that he can go against much larger schools and compete. I would like to see what he could do at Cal.

Reason for a spread coach
easier to recruit to. high schools not prepping kids especially qb's for a pro style or traditional offense

hurleycal wrote: Greg Roman for next Bears coach! Greg Roman is a brilliant OC, but he seems very low-key and introverted (much like Tedford), perfect for an OC, but I think a college head coach needs to be more charismatic and inspirational--there is no draft, there is no pay, players need to be recruited and motivated.
