Nothing wrong with it that 10K seats and a parking structure wouldn't cure.

Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
Stadiums have become studios for TV. Until there are sell-out crowds there is no need for expansion. The money required for "major renovation" can be better spent on what the team needs; Coaches salaries, training table, recruiting budgets, equipment and facilities. ....more important what the team needs and not so much what the fans want.

Only SJSU.....
I thought this was funny regarding San Jose State's stadium: Yes, the stadium was reworked in 2000 (with the seat count actually going down)for the MLS San Jose Earthquakes, who now play their home games at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara.

I think over the last 10 years we average about 32k and you you want 52k? For where our program is, I personally think the stadium is a gem and don't think it deserves to be on this list but that's just me.

RE: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
Additional concessions and bathrooms built on the west side berm of the stadium.
The west side is where the upper deck would go someday, this could be the first phase.

Now here is some common sense. I don't even want to see the words upper deck mentioned until we get these things. Money is limited and adding an upper deck would do nothing to help our program, but these things would have a direct impact on upcoming seasons...

Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
I need an Engineer to weigh in on this one, but it will be very costly to add another deck onto either side. Reason: The stadium is built on a berm, so additional weight can't be added without extensive buttressing. True??
Before they consider this, they need to do something about the deplorable condition of the rest rooms, and do extensive repairs on the existing stairsteps. The ones on the east side are crumbling.
Edit: Another major item-- replacement of the red seats; they currently are weathered and faded(they look "pink").

Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
It's been a few years since I attended a game at Bulldogs Stadium, but I still have season tickets ( ), so I care a bit about this topic. I always wonder what the point of an upper deck expansion really is. I know there's a relatively new scoreboard and whatnot, but why not just close in the end zone areas and place seating and video displays there? The engineering (as well as logistics to make it happen) question above is valid. The current construction of the stadium may not support upward expansion on either side, so it just seems logical to close in the end zones. Seats could be stacked in those areas, and still leave room for video screens, and out of town scoreboards and all that jazz. I realize that presents another issue of players/fans getting in and out of the stadium, and I don't really want to negatively impact the team's entrance. I'm just throwing an option out there I've discussed with a few others over the years when this topic comes up.

It's not as bad as some other stadiums in the MWC.
As a matter of fact, I'd say Bulldog Stadium is one of the top stadiums in the MWC.

Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
If we could barely afford field turf, what makes you think we could afford stadium expansion? I personally would love to have a complete bowl look and fill in the endzones with seats but we just don't have the $ for it. At least that's what I understand. Also, if it did happen I am sure the players entrance could be worked around it. Meaning that would be the last thing on the agenda that would hold that expansion back... Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
I'd rather put the money to new facilities on campus (some of which were dilapidated 25 years ago). Build the campus first, get more students on campus, then focus on the athletic facilities (unless there is consistent over demand). The classrooms are used maybe 200 days a year, while the football stadium is used 6 times a year. On campus building should be robust.
The cheapest option would be to widen the berm (where possible, starting with west side) and then add more rows. Handicap access would also have to be improved.
If the improvements needed for the staduium would run only $50 million (and that's lowball) for 10k additional seats, the cost per ticket (per seat added) over 30 years is about $30 (factoring current bond interest and less revenue for any parking, food, merchandise revenue). ®√•

Concrete cracks which can lead to bigger problems. We need a simple patch job to eliminate Dog Fans8's concerns Bulld0g8588 wrote:

Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
You can borrow the money and use the stadium as collateral. As long as their is enough equity to borrow against, you shouldn't have a problem and the future ticket sales should cover most of the borrowed cost. The problem is when you want to increase the size of the stadium more than you can afford or borrow. Going to 70k or even 60k would need extra cash from donors, but a modest 5k or 10k or even just luxury suites could be doable without donors. 559notown wrote: If we could barely afford field turf, what makes you think we could afford stadium expansion? Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
Just to "upgrade" the stadium would be a tremendous expense. Our federal and state disabilities laws will add millions to the basic upgrade price, not to mention the 40 to 50% added cost due to prevailing wage laws that kick in if any state or federal money is used.
The athletic department is very aware of the conditions that exist, but have other more pressing issues with athletics infrastructures on campus. Stadium upgrade is in the future, just not immediate future.
We have a great facility. True, it's 30+ years old and showing its age, but it's one of the best venues in the MWC. In a few years, after all the current projects now in the construction planning pipeline are completed or at least being moved forward, Bulldog Stadium will get its facelift.
Now, if a wealthy sugar daddy suddenly materialized and donated multiple millions of $$$ for stadium improvement, of course it would happen much sooner.

He already did. Mr. Meyers. But they used the money for a sports medicine center. Hopefully it can prevent some injuries to our athletes.

Personally, I would rather that sugar daddy donate to CTD, Toth and Schramm's salaries to keep them around. I could careless about our stadium. That would change if we sold out every game and needed more room, but until that's the case our #1 goal is to keep this staff for as long as possible..... I'm not sure if it's my youth or what but I don't share the pure hatred that most here have towards SJSU(mainly because for my whole life we have kicked their butts). But I feel for them, after all the years of horrible football, they finally get a guy that is as good as CTD in my opinion and poof he is gone just like that. Could you imagine being a Spartan fan, things are looking way up and then a piece of crap PAC12 that has enough money to get Coach Mac comes along and bam.... Back to square 1. I don't know much about their replacement but I doubt he will continue what Mac had going..... Pretty sad in my opinion...

I know they've provided the coaches with new video equipment, buses to Buchanan's practice field (when the basin was flooded), and they also provide occasional meals.

Big dollars raised or donated by groups such as the South Valley guys, go to special projects, like turf, the new video program CTD got last year and the sports medicine facility. The special project destination is decided by T Boeh! QBC Club funds help with the daily expenses that help make the program run smoother,Ike what was mentioned above by another poster. In short, QBC funds kick in where the universitys normally budgeted funds don't cover a particular expense. All QBC $$$ is technically BDF $$$. T Boeh is the person who determine where it is spent.

Re: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
I just do not see stadium renovation being a big-deal. There are only 5 or 6 times it is used. Concessions is the main area needing improvement, IMO.
What gives me the greatest concern are the needs of the team and this includes coaches salaries. If Fresno State is going to keep its coaches from being poached, then money talks. If Fresno football is as successful as I think it is going to be then Fresno's coaches are going to be in demand. There is no way in stopping an assistant coach from leaving if he is offered an HC job somewhere. But the Head Coach has to be compensated enough that he doesn't go wandering-off.
Boise's assistant coaches are heavily poached every year. It is what happens to a successful program. However, the Head Coach stays. Petersen is making enough money he is satisfied. He has come to the realization, "You can only eat so many steaks and drink so much whiskey". I see DeRuyter being the same way here at Fresno. I have a positive feeling the money will be there as Fresno State continues to win. In the meantime a stadium expansion or renovation makes zero sense to me.

Great post FANG but what are trying to do steal my thunder? Look 5 posts up and you will see a mirror of what you wrote... Great minds think a like?????? "Personally, I would rather that sugar daddy donate to CTD, Toth and Schramm's salaries to keep them around. Pretty sad in my opinion..."

RE: Bulldog Stadium in need of major renovation
The stadium has been in need of serious upgrades for years. Bathrooms and Concessions need to be improved greatly, they are worse than Clovis Unified's High School Stadiums. They need to take the Top 10 Rows of seats on both the East and West sides and Create Club level seating to provide more revenue opportunites! They need to expand the available luxury seating around the stadium, it provides more money and additional revenue.
Truly the University needs to think outside the box more to get the stadium FULL for gameday! Work with the Community to cause less conflict with High School games on Saturdays. Play a High School Game of the Week at the Stadium on Fridays to provide additional revenues to upgrade the Stadium etc....

The video board essentially pays for itself with its advertising revenue. The Univesity doesn't get a royalty for allowing me to piss in a porcelain toilet. Start selling out the stadium, donate money, and you'll see real change.

I believe the full cost of the video board was covered by Learfield Sports. They make it work by selling advertisements.
I love the video board, at least until last year. Now the time between plays is so short there isn't much time to show replays. If they do show a replay, and you are looking at it, you might miss the next play.

If you go to the top of page 1 and count down, you will see my post stating money should go to the team and coaches and not the stadium. I didn't "steal" anything. In fact I was ahead of you. But it doesn't matter in the sense commonsense makes sense and the more who realize the better-off everyone.
