Coach Sweeney very ill in the hospital
I've been told by a few formal players that Coach Sweeney is very ill in the hospital.
"He's non-responsive right now but holding on" is the text I got.
I'll post once I get more updates, and if anyone else has any details please let us know.

"His test all came back negative but June said he is not very responsive"
Just got this update from another former player. For those that don't know, June is Coach' wife.

Coach Sweeney is a big reason im a Bulldogs fan. My dad started taking me to the games during the years when Sweeney coached his son at QB, Stephen Baker was making touchdowns, Ron Rivers was a monster sack machine at rover, and T-Heavy was a force to be feared. Sweeney and i share a birthdat and they often coincided with season home openers. Fun days for a young teen and their dad, watching their favorite team. Thanks for the memories Coach Sweeney and prayers to you and your family.

I always liked Jim Sweeney. A great coach who really established Fresno State football as a force to be reckoned with. God bless him.

Crossed paths with Jim once. I was standing outside the door to the air terminal (was right about the time he retired) and I saw him jogging up the walk to the door. I said 'hi, coach' and he turned to me with his impish smile and said, "I'm an awesome runner, aren't I."
He reveled in his Irish temperament and could be grumpy and buffoonish and charming, almost at the same time. He is an original and left a colorful trail in college football history. He put Fresno State on the map, AND HE BEAT USC.

Prayers for the entire Sweeney clan.
A unique individual to be sure. Anyone can say what they will about the shape of the program when he retired, but just compare it to the state of the program when he took it over in the mid 70's. Ratcliff, to a 42K seat Bulldog Stadium. I'm not convinced there were many, if any, others that would have come here at the time who could have pulled that off. He was a bullchitter, salesman, and backslapper extrordinare. There were worse FB coaches too. A half dozen or so times I ran into Coach Sweeney, and he would always have a moment for you to shake hands, and exchange pleasentries.

Nobody would accuse Sweeney of being overly classy. But he was a DAMN good coach.

This central coast Spartan, who has many Bulldog friends, hopes that Coach Sweeney is giving his nurses tips on how to make him comfortable. Meanwhile I hope his nurses push him hard so that the can get him the hell out of the hospital. My father survived the fatal 1960 Cal Poly plane crash and that's how he got out of that Toledo hospital—by complaining.

Was on my normal 9 mi run on Ocean View Blvd on the Peninsula wearing my normal red Bulldog Hoodie, heard this honking like all get out. Looked up and driving along side of me was the Coach himself. Big Wave and Smile for me. Waved back. Raced his ride for about 30 yards. He beat me!! I'll never forget that encounter with Coach Sweeney. Jeremiah 29:11 (favorite scripture of mine and also Word passed on to me by Paul Loefller)

After every game Sweeney and his wife would go to "JJ's" and have clam chowder. He would go to everyone at the bar and say Howdy. Most of them didn't know he was Fresno States head coach and he didn't care if they did. I used to get a kick out of that. I became friends of a guy who played for Jim Sweeney in Bozeman Montana State. He owned a bar in White Fish Montana called "Bulldog". He donated to Fresno State football because Jim Sweeney told him too.  |

Rocketman5000 from BroncoCountry has asked that his best wishes for Coach Sweeney be forwarded since he is banned on this board. He says that he admires and respects CJM and wishes him the best.
I would also hope that Rocket may be unbanned since I've never known him to be anything but professional and courteous.
