Re: Old school guys remember when
I remember when Al Radka would park his mobile radio broadcasting unit on Shaw avenue early in the morning broadcast time. Guys on their way to Fresno State class would drive-by and flip-off 'ole Al. He would shout-out while on the air, "Same to ya fella's"

Used to listen to Al Radka while my dad took us to St. Theresa's School. It was a long ride town Moroa from Pinedale to the Tower District in a 56 Ford.
By the way, Appleton just celebrated 25 years on KMJ!

What station was Wolfman Jack on? Moved to Bako in Jr High, 1962, Wolfman was just starting here when we left.
Another subject; how many on this board attended FSU football games at Radcliff Stadium?

Re: Old school guys remember when
My mom and dad went to games at Radcliff. They've told me stories of drinking beers and rolling the bottles down to the bottom row. By the end of the game they would try to have enough bottles lined up to run the length of the stadium!!
Too cool.

We have become pampered society. When I would hear Pat Hill whine about facilities, I felt like giving him a quick-kick in the azz.

Another subject; how many on this board attended FSU football games at Radcliff Stadium? When we first moved to Fresno in 1960 we lived next to John Euless Park and my father and I would walk to the games at Ratcliffe. My aunt was an undergrad at FSC and she used to take me to games too. Sometimes we'd wear white shirts and sit in the card section. Anyone remember card sections? I remember the cheerleaders back then used to do the Mickey Mouse cheer when the refs called us for a penalty. "M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E..." And yes, Dale Messer was my favorite player. I was a student at the FSC Lab School, and Jon Anabo came and visited our class one time. I was thrilled!

Al Radka was a great Fresno State football player in his own right...he was a lineman. One of his hang-outs was "Nancy's". I tipped a few with him on occasion. He was a hell-of-a comedian and a huge booster for anything Fresno......great guy.

The babe ruth of racewalking was still competing at that time: Robert Korzeniowski, a Pole. He won the Olympic gold in 50km three times and a gold in the 20km once. His last gold was at the age of 36. You might not think it, but these events are extremely demanding and they travel faster than you would think. The record for 50km is 3:35:47. That's 43 minutes per 10k. My best time to RUN the 10k when I was young and fit was 50 minutes. I'm sure you were joking, but I thought I'd just offer a little perspective on the sport.

He would have to fill you in on the races he competed in, I remember watching and trying it seemed tough on the hips.

The event looks rather comical, focusing on the hips, but it feels natural enough when you are doing it. When my joints could no longer handle jogging I took up aerobic walking for exercise and I would occasionally pass slow joggers.

How about cruising Belmont, Mars Drive-in, etc.?
And do some of you remember when Ray Appleton was cool, holding court at Cedar Lanes, sitting in a booth, developing his talking skills?
Wonder if some of you know that Ray used to tour with big-time rock groups as a label guy.

Nobody in the County could catch him when we were kids. A little off topic, but Dale's wife Anne was my first grade teacher....unfortunately she's since passed on but about 10 year ago, while working at a bank here in town, I helped her into her safe deposit box and couldn't help but ask her if she remembered me, I said my first name and before I could get my last name out, she said it. It was a really cool experience and she obviously made a huge impression on me in 1st grade and to have her remember me was amazing. Growing up a Fresno State fan from day one, it was always cool to be in her class, wife of a Bulldog legend!

Re: Old school guys remember when
Ok....I'm going to show my age but....
In the early 70s I was thinking about leaving the Bay Area to go to Fresno State. My buddies and I wanted to visit the campus so we drove down during the spring. We stopped at a coffee shop on Highway 99 near Merced and the newspaper stand had an L.A. Times and the front page headline said "Fresno Rampage." We didn't know it at the time but there were students riots on campus, the library had been fire bombed and there were protests on Cedar and Shaw.
We visited the campus anyway and while we were at the Student Union we were all asked to evacuate because there was a bomb threat. I stated thinking that there was no way I was coming to Fresno State. Then my buddies took me to the new apartment they were going to live in which was on North Sixth Street in an area known as "sin city." The apartment complex had a keg by the pool and there were great looking chicks hanging out in their bikinis. I immediately decided that Fresno State was the place for me. Best decision I ever made.
