Question, would WV accept a ACC invite?

Question for the WV folks. Would WV switch conference's if the ACC offered a invitation?

Yes ... Any fool knows they have to deal with the GOR's.  That ship sailed long ago.

Nope. We're a football school. We don't want to be in a basketball conference.

We would accept invites to the NFC East, NATO, and the Greenbrier River Watershed Association first, all of which are more likely.

I don't think they would today, but in 10 years if the offer was there and the revenue was similiar maybe, especially if the Big 12 has not expanded to add a "bridge" to WVU.

That said I do not think it will come to this, as I think the ACC revenue will cause defections to the BIG/SEC before then.

This is the answer to adding more teams, WVU to another conference, Big 12 championship game etc.  The revenue differential between ACC and the 4 leagues above in income is too great and ACC has too many schools that are free riders in the classic economic sense. Let that situation continue, the playoffs will be established, pay for play will be a reality and the money for college players wont be so great because they have to pay everyone that plays sports. Not just football and basketball. Not just men's sports, all sports.

Asking if we will join the ACC today is like asking us to take a new job with a reduction in pay and among less accomplished professionals.

I'm pretty sure they would today or tomorrow unless the ACC fell apart. They would get back rivalry games and geography, isn't that what college conferences are supposed to be about?

Re: Question, would WV accept a ACC invite?

Right now, it can't happen. Maybe in ten years when the GOR is up, or if another school finds some kind of GOR loophole or fights it in court establishing a precedent. I don't see that happening though.

However, in ten years I do believe that was our administration's initial plan - to land somewhere, and if it wasn't the SEC or ACC, then maybe we could land there on down the road.

As far as the revenue differences between the ACC and Big XII, it's difficult to tell exactly what that is or will be. I personally don't think it would be too far apart. Evidently, neither did FSU or Clemson. If there's a two or three million dollar difference annually and there's an opportunity for WVU to switch conferences, I would think that small amount wouldn't hold us back. It would depend a great deal on what promises we have made to our creditors at that point.

What would be the exit fees/ buy-in costs be?  If anything more than nominal, it would be a stupid move right now, IMO. Sure all things being equal it is probably a better fit, but money details matter in these sort of scenarios.

No....

it may be a better geographical fit, but not a cultural one. Very happy to be in the B12.

Re: Question, would WV accept a ACC invite?

I almost certainly think they would, just like FSU would probably accept an SEC invite, and the way VT accepted the ACC invite after snubs all those years.

Bitterness is one thing, but so is cutting your nose off to spite your face.  Being with regional opponents, traditional rivals, less travel, better access to road games, and visibility in Florida rather than Texas, all would be worth a few million dollars difference.

But as others said...not happening any time soon.

The powers that be would be stupid to turn down the invite. I hate everything about the ACC and hope that the league comes crumbling down. Having said that, between travel expenses (this extends beyond just the football team),  having our natural rivalries back, being able to have a high level of fan support at away games, and the non-revenue sports teams being in conferences that make sense there are way too many pros to the move compared to cons. They would be foolish to not make the move. The only downside is this cultural fit crap. Who cares? It was fine in the old days of the big east and it'll be fine if we were to move to the ACC.

Disclaimer: I love the B12 and hope it survives the realignment mess and the ACC comes tumbling down. Also I don't think we'd ever get an ACC invite, but realignment has resulted in crazier things happening

Re: Question, would WV accept a ACC invite?

I think the SEC is a more likely future for WVU.... Too many schools in the ACC simply dont want us there.

I am happy in the B12 and I am grateful but it is nice to have close and natural rivals.

As you should be. You are in a P5 league with payouts unlike any you have seen prior with a bunch of excellent schools.

That being said, what is this "cultural fit" poop? You wouldn't be a cultural fit with UVa (who is?) and UNC, and that blue facade is falling down around their ears. FSU, Clemson, and NCSt however aren't much different than VT, and VT is basically a twin son of a different mother with WVU. I'll give you Wake and Duke. But like UVa, they are only a cultural fit for each other, not necessarily anyone else in the ACC.

BC is a devil you know, as is Syracuse. You guys are not exactly a cultural fit for Pitt, but that didn't stop you from playing them what, over 100 times?

I don't buy it. If you say the ACC has too many private schools, I'm right there with you. But don't act like you would be on an island culturally. That's just not the case.

Something that's pretty much made up for some fans to make the b12 feel like a better fit for usnoidea I don't really buy it and it certainly doesn't hold much weight when deciding whether or not to accept an invitation to join another conference

I think they should.  Then we can keep all their media rights for the life of the GOR, or they can spend a ton of money suing the Big 12 to get out of it.  In the meantime, they can make nothing from the ACC while they're suing, then make less in the ACC than in the Big 12 when it's all over.

It's a no-brainer.

THIS. It's nothing against the Big 12; it's just geography and tradition.
Clearly a deal would have to be worked between the ACC and Big 12 to release WVU from the GOR.
As a WVU fan, I'd rather make a little less in the ACC and have Pitt and Va. Tech back on the schedule every year.

I would rather play Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Iowa teams than many of the acc schools.   VT, Clemson, Miami, and Florida State rank high on my list, but otherwise, not so much now that we are in the Big 12.

I would rather add two eastern time zone teams and be done with it.

Re: Question, would WV accept a ACC invite?

I don't think the ACC is going anywhere. I do think a ten team big 12 with one far away east coast member is shaky. This just can't be long term. You guys should be angling to get out. Smart big12 fans won't be offended. You did the right thing at the time. Helped us out. It's just not a long term answer.
