All time Martinsburg Team

This is for you Eastern Panhandlers. I don't have the history that some and its not complete I thought I'd take a stab at it for fun.

QB Nate Sowers
RB. Fulton Walker
WR. Cedric Brown
WR. Brandon Barrett
OT. Steve Roach
NG. Harwood
SS. Justin Arndt
FS. David Gladden
DE. Darren Arndt
DB. Randy Faulk
DB. Marsalis Basey
DT. Buddy Hesen
DB. Jason Johnson
KR. Bill Bill Adams
Utility. Chris Perkins
LB. Jenkins

Here's some kids from other E. Panhandle Schools. Again, not complete. Other names are welcome. I didn't do well with the lineman.

Jefferson. James Jett, Troy Wilt, Bootsie Washington KR,
Hedgesville, Kevin Sowers, Aliveto, center from the 90s that played at Marshall
Musselman. Didn't follow them

RE: All time Martinsburg Team

I would add Xavier Peters to Martinsburg. He did win the Huff award as a DB.

Any all Martinsburg team has to include Phillip Shelton. He was who everyone compared Barrett to.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

When did he play? The guy to quiz would be Rick Wachtel about players. He coached so many kids in little
League and has been announcing home games forever.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

WR Jason Dirting played 4 years at Shepherd and was all conference. He played at Mart and was allstate 2 years in mid late 90s.
Cedric Brown father Todd was a great RB and DB at MHS in 80s and went to Marshall where he started 4 years.
Kevin Weaver  RB played with Todd Brown in same backfield and went to Wash and Lee where he started.
Kevin Hoffmaster started for years at Middle Linebacker in mid-late 80s and was recruited by many D1 colleges.
DB Dean Green played at MHS in early 80s and was signed by Maryland where he started 2 years at FS.
Current Dcoordinator Brian Sine was a beast at MLB as well in late 80s early 90s and went on to play at Wesleyan.
Pete Yurish was a stud LB for Shepherd in the early 80s.

Martinsburg has a rich history...I do not where they stack up now, perhaps Ed Forshey has some insight on where they stack up alltime in the state in wins. At one time they were up there high on the list.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

Cedric Brown's uncle Brian was a very good running back before Todd Brown. He played at Fairmont and led the WVAC in rushing several times.

Bill Adams was an all-state DE and played running back at Shepherd where he too led the WVAC in rushing

Leon Harris was a lineman at the University of Maryland in the early 1970's.

Norman Green was also a HB on the 1976 team and got a full ride to the University of Kentucky. In high school he may have been better than Fulton Walker (who was his cousin).

The best FB Martinsburg ever had was Mike Callahan, at 6'0" 230 and ran a 4.6 40. Also form the 1976 team.

Mike Quinn was an all-state LB at 140 pounds, also from the '76 team.

To change the subject slightly, the 1986 team had two pretty good football players who later combined for around 20 years of playing Major League Baseball.

I played with Marty Brenner and he was a great leader and an even better punter. He later became a high school coach in Alabama where his teams won several AAAAA state Championships

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

From Hedgesville I would have to add Jared Donaldson  (early 1990's) who pound for pound, was the hardest hitting high school player I ever saw. He only weighed about 160 but he let like he was 260. He went the Naval Academy, where he boxed and played 165 lb. football, and is now a a Navy SEAL.

Also from Hedgesville (in the mid-90's) would be JR Barrett. Outstanding wide receiver.

Also, Calvin Peterson and Tommy Neal should be mentioned. Calvin Played tackle at Martinsburg in the early 60's and started 4 years at Shepherd, through the late '60's. Tommy graduated from Martinsburg in 1969 and was a 4 year starter, at Shepherd, at center.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

My brother said Tommy Sowers was a beast. He was Nate's dad. He had two other sons that went to Hedgesville. Hoffmaster was a hard hitter. I actually thought Mike Sherman was better than Sine. They played together. They had a great win against an Allegheny team that won two MD state titles. I should have mentioned Clay Grove from Mussleman. He was better than all three.

I played with Tommy Sowers and he was a beast but there have a been a couple others at his positions who were as good or better.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

Fun thread, some great names are mentioned here.

A couple corrections on names. Jay Quinn was the linebacker on the mid-70s teams and Derrick Harris played defensive end at Maryland on Jerry Claiborne's Cotton Bowl team.

Martinsburg's two state titles don't stack up favorably against many of the state's traditional powers, but the teams in the far eastern part of the state were essentially ineligible for state title consideration until about 1965, when the SSAC ratings began crediting teams for out-of-state wins. Certainly the unbeaten 1954 team deserved a title shot, and a couple of the early 60s teams were quite good.

Russ Potts, former Winchester (Va.) Star sports editor and later a major TV sports promoter, mentioned some other Martinsburg greats in a recent story about the MHS-Handley rivalry, including:

"Demon" Don Netoskie, who led the Southeastern Conference in rushing three years at the University of Kentucky.

Ted Kershner and Dickie Lewis of the undefeated MHS team in 1954, who starred at Maryland.

Paul Flick, a former Brown University star who played for the Philadelphia Eagles.

I also believe there was a doctor in Martinsburg (Flanagan?) who played in the very early days of the NFL.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

If he'd been focused on football, Spencer Ferguson could have been great. He had a good sophomore year after replacing his injured older brother. He and Basey both went D1 in basketball.

Re: All time Martinsburg Team

I went to school with all three of them and they were all very good. Johnny Johnson was probably the fastest back in the area during those days. Tommy Sowers was a hard man, believe me, and there was another guy way back then named Fred Corbin who was not to shabby either.
