Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

Anyone know if it is cancelled due to the snowstorm in Garrett County? I am trying to figure out if I should go or not and the high school doesn't answer their phones.

Thank you.

He only had 48. Not deserving of a scholarship in my opinion he should score all 50.

Re: Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

I left with 5 minutes to go in the 4th since Morgantown was up 15. I am surprised Washington came back but MHS had major struggles in the 2nd quarter.

Here are Nathan's stats up to the time I left:

During warm-ups: 4-6 from 3
                        5-8 from 2
                        Made all his FT

Game: 0-3 from 3
         6-10 from 2
         No FT attempted
         9 Rebounds
         2 Assists
         1 Steal
         5 Blocks
         0 TO

You couldn't tell a whole lot about his defense or offense mainly because he was guarding a SG that played SF/PF, the kid was 6'5'' max, he tried to take Adrian out off the dribble but couldn't do a whole lot. Adrian is good coming off his guy and blocking help side. His shooting mechanics are solid and he can dribble very well for a guy that is 6'8''. He doesn't get a whole lot of help from his teammates and take away to see how good he is. The plays also are not meant for him to score except out of bounds where he screens for a guy, and they leave him 1-on-1 down low. He has decent moves down low and likes to dribble by people, he didn't seem afraid of contact which is good. One thing I didn't like was that he slept a little on defense and didn't ask for the ball on offense. The defense thing is also bad evaluation since he was guarding people on the 3 point line, a place that he won't have to worry too much once he gets to the college level. I didn't get to see Dante Grantham play since he was suspended for taunting after postarizing a kid last week, he will play tomorrow but I won't be down to check them play, I think Martinsburg will beat them pretty bad since the style of play is completely different, Martinsburg pressures and runs at all times, while Morgantown slows down and play a half-court defense. (Is that how most team play around Morgantown, example Bridgeport, R.C. Byrd, etc?, Morgantown was completely lost when Washington put a little pressure on them, they scored 4 points on the second quarter and probably turn the ball over 15 times).
I am no Pro scout, but it is hard to find tall players, with good physicality that can dribble like a SF and make shots from outside. Even though Nathan didn't make any from 3, every shot was right there and a couple of them were out of balance, his warm up shots were all perfect. I feel that he does deserve a scholarship and will help out right away but he will have trouble transitioning from WV High School to Big 12 basketball.
If you have any questions about the game just let me know and I will see if I can answer them.

He'll be guarding guys on the perimeter alot for us. He's going to be a wing player. SF/PF combo guy, but mainly a SF.

Re: Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

Cookie's not on the squad.
The D-1 football signees, Cedric Brown and Eugene German, didn't come out for hoops this year.
Jordan Robinson is the only starter this year in both FB and BB.
Guard David Long is back this season. He missed all of last BB season after breaking his leg late in the Morgantown FB playoff game in '11.

Re: Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

He will, but not SG that are faster than him. He will have guys like Aaric Murray to guard, that was my point. But I don't think he will play a SF position at all. We will go with 2 PF next year for sure, either being Murray if he stays and Gerun/Noreen. Or if Murray leaves, it will be Macon/Williams, Gerun/Noreen, with Nathan and the other guy, forgot his name.

Re: Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

My assessment of last nights Morgantown game is a little different than the one above, but I won't go into great detail and judge a kid on one game. All I will add is that if NA expects to play at the D1 level he better develop a shooter's attititude and get a lot tougher.
I know D1 recruiters know a lot more than I do and they see what they looking for in a player.
One thing is for sure, you can't teach 6'9, but you can develop a 6'9 player into a D1 player.

Buddha Grantham will be available tonight vs Morgantown. He got 2 bush techs in the Brooke Point game for dunks before and during the game and had to sit out 2 games. Keep and eye on Jalen Lewis who is Marcelus Basey's stepson.

Sorry if I didn't put that on my part, but I do understand that is hard to scout a guy on one game, maybe he was playing horrible. I just put what I saw from that ONE game.

RE: Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

Just got back from the game. Huggs and Everhart showed up second half. No way NA will see playing time for WV. I think he would struggle in the WVIAC. Martinsburg won by around 15.

Re: Martinsburg Holiday Tournament

Take it from fprio, if WVU wants to compete on a national level in Basketball they need to recruit better talent than Huggs has recruited so far.  NA is a great young man, but adds very little in terms of the big picture, if the big picture is what we (WVU) is after.
