Parkersburg High School Stadium condemned

Sadly Parkersburg High School Stadium has been condemned due
to strucal issues, the repairs are going to be very expensive if it is even repairable.
Now comes the question how much is the community and boosters willing to pay
out if Parkersburg continues to field a team that cannot compete in AAA
football. I know from being on the boosters it was amazing how many people would
provide money and time to build almost anything the coaches wanted. The program
was on top and the people were behind it 100%. But former members that I know
feel as if they have been deceived by the current and prior administration by
hiring and putting in place a football coaching staff that very substandard .
It will interesting to see now that the stadium is in need of major attention
just how much weight the High Rollers will carry. It would be hard to support a program that don't care if they win or not.

Sound, not that I don't believe this, but is there a link to a story with detailed information? Just curious, and I'm sure Ed will be weighing in.

Here is the story from the Parkersburg newspaper.

The same thing happened at old Laidley Field in Charleston. They put up a wall halfway up the seating area and used it that way but it eventually had to be torn down and rebuilt. Sometimes starting over with a new structure is better than trying to repair an old one. I hope they can work things out.

Re: Parkersburg High School Stadium condemned

Sadly "The Old Lady" is condemed for the 2nd time.
Happen back in the middle '80s also.
The solution back then was to put temp bleachers down on the old cinder track and about 5 years later a local business man who was a exmayor, Al Smith, came in and put iron beams under the concrete bleachers and it was sealed from any type of leaking, that worked until a few years ago the concrete starting pulling apart and breaking up.

This wouldn't have been a problem if the school system back in the '80s had allowed the person who gave South property to build their stadium,
Erickson, the okay to come in a rebuild Stadium Field,
all they wanted in return was a name plate up front at the Big Gate with the name "Erickson" on the place.
As you can see with the closing of "The Old Lady" his idea and money was turned down, cause some people didn't want a name on Stadium Field.

We don't need a new concerte 10,000 seat place.
We don't fill it any more for any game, even the South game every other year.
We need to build a 6-7000 seat metal structure, about 3,500 on each side.
The 1st thing they will did to check is can the press box be saved, if so it would save a big hunk of cash.

Its weird we have a 1.5 million dollar field, 750,000 track, a little over a 1 million dollar locker room and rest rooms, but currently can't seat 1 person safely.

This is sad. If not fixed by next year I would assume that they could play at South's stadium. They played at Stadium Field for years. What do you think Ed?

If the people coming to games continue to drop we could play at Jackson Middle School and have extra room.

If they tear it down the pressbox will have to be redone. I'd put 5000 on the home side 3000 on the visitor. They do come close to filling the home side once in a while.

Heard today the press box might be able to be saved.
I guess someone said they could reinforce that part with beams from under it.

Not close in the past 4 years.
They didn't even sell out the reserved section this year.
Many of families that have had the same seats for decades have not renewed them the past few years.

Ed,

I would like to see it done right and a new stadium built. My guess is your earlier commint about the place where the Big Reds play may very well be called Erickson. Just on the other side of town.

Re: Parkersburg High School Stadium condemned

I really hate to say this, but knowing the people like I do behind PHS Football I can't see them ever agreeing to play at Erickson even for 1 year.

I'm willing to bet it would be 10 away games before they gave into playing at Erickson.
I also don't think that Erickson's playing surf could hold that many more games than what it does right now.
Its a shame when the best on campus stadium has became a total mess again.
-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------
It would be done correctly even if they could safe that pressbox.
Reinforce it from down under than build the new bleachers just in front of it and tie both end together. Would save a hunk of money if its possible.
What I don't want to see is one of those cracker box metal pressboxes like at Huntington, Midland, or University with no room for people to work inside and coaches have to go on the roof to spot the game.

Ed,

I think the feeling might be shared over here on the southside of the Little K (home visiting the folks).

I thought that maybe a bond issue could be floated to repair Stadium Field if you included the completion of Erickson and whatever Williamstown needs, but by brother shot that down in a heartbeat.  I think the feeling over here is strong against helping out PHS iin any way since there was no help for South.

It's a shame, and I am a huge South fan.

Its really not South's place to bail us out, or our place to bail them out, but a bond for the either of the 3 projects is a great idea, but even myself wouldn't vote yes for it, why have your property taxes raised for these things to get done.

If either get finished, I think its gong to take someone winning the Powerball and giving each school a hunk of money, or someone like a pro athlete with ties to both schools writing a check as a tax writeoff, ok Nick Swisher write those 2 checks.
