DeChellis' spin .....

DeChellis' spin .....

Below is an article which a friend e-mailed to me from the Baltimore Sun in which DeChellis attempts to put his spin on his tenure at his "dream school" and take a few subtle shots at Penn State.

Perhaps if  "good guy" Ed DeChellis was as good of a coach as he is a business man  then he would have been successful as a head coach in the Big Ten rather than have a double losing record of 114 wins and 138 losses overall and just 41 wins and 95 losses in the Big Ten.  Enjoy!

IMO, DeChellis was a phony and never belonged in a high major conference.

Re: DeChellis' spin .....

I don't think any of you understand what makes Ed DeChillis tick.  He thought leaving Penn State and moving on to Navy was the right decision for himself and his family.  I say good for him and I thank him for his service to Penn State. I wish him well. What his former and current  players think of him as a man and a coach is more meaningful for me than the opinions of casual observers.

Having said this, I think Pat Chambers has the potential to take Penn State basketball to the next level.  Why not focus on the coach we have and move forward?

RE: DeChellis' spin .....

He was speaking to the local paper trying to get some positive attention on the Navy program. I'd say that's not spin but PR.

RE: DeChellis' spin .....

Too much of his time was spent meeting with athletic department officials, boosters and media. Not enough was spent actually coaching his players.

"I felt like I didn't even know the kids," he said. "I wasn't a basketball coach, a teacher, a mentor. I was window dressing. A facade."

And while DeChellis is very careful not to criticize players at Penn State, he is not shy about saying that what drew him to the Naval Academy was the chance to work with "actual student-athletes." In the Big Ten, basketball programs are expected to generate revenue and create notoriety for the school. Teams hop conferences in the name of competition -- and cash.

"Some of these things going on," DeChellis said, "you couldn't possibly look at and say that they're being done for the kids. It's for the money."

Whatever Ed.  Chambers doesn't seem to have any trouble coaching, recruiting, and meeting with boosters/officials.  the problem wasn't penn state or bigtime college hoops, it was you.  if you felt like you were "window dressing" that's your own fault for not doing something about it.  these quotes are lame.

Whatever is right.  Ed is so full of BS it is unreal.  He's right about one thing - he wasn't a basketball coach.  And still isn't.  At least not a decent one.  4 last place finishes in 8 seasons at PSU, then 0-14 in the Patriot League.  Nice job Ed, even Jerry Dunn was better.  Maybe if he viewed himself as something other than window dressing he'd have more success.  In less than 10 months Chambers recruited better than all 8 years of DeChellis combined, and with a major scandal in the background.

In 1 season, Chambers transformed Frazier into a 1st team all Big Ten guard.  DeChellis had one plan, let Battle have the ball.  I loved watching Jones peak in his sophomore year and then kind of fade into the background.  Brooks had NBA talent but was never used correctly and should have been redshirted.  This year, the team had virtually no experience because Ed never trusted his bench, ever.  Not once in 8 years did he make decent use of his bench.  Ed also left the scholarship situation totally unbalanced and lost the verbal from Trey Burke after having a horrendously awful season in 2009-2010.  So long and thanks for the memories Ed.

Leave the guy alone. He's history as far as PSU is concerned. No need to continue to berate the guy.

as long as he's going to whine about PSU and make comments like that, he's fair game.  I never respected him as a coach, but had a TON of respect as a person.  I can't even say that now if he's going make comments like this.

I agree.  It's easy to leave him alone if he does not go to a major newspaper and imply that PSU left him feeling "empty", and put lots of pressure to win on him (which everyone who follows the program knows is not the case).  Ed got a pass for horrible seasons and eventually left on his own.  Nobody fired him, even though there were plenty of reasons to (all related to him sucking as a coach).  That guy never should have been hired in the first place and was lucky as anything to have this job.  Then he turns around and knocks it.  It does not help that his successor seems to have had little to no difficulty pointing the program in the right direction in less than 1 year.  Everyone always praises Ed's character but he seems like a guy who BS's his way through quite a bit.

Where did he whine about Penn State? He was comparing the difference of big time college sports to Navy. He was not bashing Penn State. He was talking about the realities of big time college sports, which he did not want to be part of.

Much like a guy who drops out of Wall Street to run a farm, he chose a different style of coaching.

I don't get the hate. He figured out that he was not a good fit for the Big Ten and Penn State and took himself out of the equation and went smaller. To a place where you don't recruit and you don't have to deal with boosters, etc.

Good for him. And with Chambers, good for us.

Lousy coach.......so glad he is gone.  I'm just sorry it took so long to can this loser.

How many players did DeChellis have leave/transfer?  Revolving door while Ed was here.

At least 8 or 9.  Most of them in the first two seasons, and then a few more promising players in 2010.  He was awful.

RE: DeChellis' spin .....

It amazes me that some people can't just let this go. DeChellis is a good man. He wasn't a great coach but he has moved on. The future looks bright for Penn State. Let's go ahead and enjoy that. I also wish DeChellis luck at Navy. I have no ill will toward a guy who was a bargain hire and given minimal support from the athletic department.

I agree with a lot of your post, however, you have to admit that Curley was painfully patient with him. He really gave DeChellis the benefit of the doubt for a long time so I have a hard time thinking that he got minimal support. Maybe in comparison to other Big 10 coaches, but certainly more support than Dunn received.
