Who is the Next Head Coach at Saint Bonaventure?

Who is next in line? Have they already hired a new head coach for 2014? If so, who is it? If not, who are the names being thrown around? Does anyone have any insight?

Lot's of good HC jobs opening up. There are some solid assistant HC's out there that need to step up. Like the guy over at San Fernando. Guys in the SCV as well like Coda at Hart and the guy at Canyon OC Rainwald. Everything Cyn did was due to that guys offense.

I don't think you'll see any hire until after the the playoffs are all said and done, because that's when you start to see the coaching carousel really get heated. I have zero inside information, but I personally think they hire outside the program, but that's just me.

The Calabasas coach is available.  If not, maybe you haul Welch out from retirement in Santa Margarita?

I doubt Welch would want to take a 60k less job

Not a fan of Lara, but there are obviously worse coaches. Good dude though, just not a really great or even really, really good coach.

Welch would be awesome, but like others have said, no way he takes a job that's less than 70ish grand a year. Just no way.

Re: Who is the Next Head Coach at Saint Bonaventure?

Guys, Calabasas is a public school.  Do you think the head football coach makes even $60 or $70K a year?  I doubt it's anywhere close to that which of course is part of their problem.  If anyone has an idea what the normal football HC in LA area makes, that would be helpful and more in line with what they would do here.  It's not like Agoura where Clay Matthews helped out and probably threw a few bucks in.  This school has no one to do anything like that and if they did, they would probably go private.  They need a football person who would do it for fun and not care about money.

nobody at the HC level does it for "fun". Building a program isn't a 3-8 job. You gotta work 80 hrs a week. Yes most city coaches make crap but they also teach. No school that wants a good football program (cuz it's a program, not a team) will get a solid coach without paying for them. Reality is reality.

I agree with the above statement completely.  It is going to be interesting to see what happens at SB for several reasons - 1) Groff seems to be inept or just does not care that much about athletics, so all bets are off when it comes down to figuring out what he is going to decide  2) given that SB is not likely going to be willing to pay a good salary, they are going to have limited options... but on the other hand it is a winning program with lots of talent so that should attract interest in and of itself and no one is sure if the incoming coach will get a teaching position or not to supplement his income 3)  it is hard to say how much alumni and booster pressure is going to affect Groff's decision given that they will likely be at odds... it would not suprise me if Groff wants to keep Muller but he knows if he does this he might get run out of the school

This is going to be one of the more interesting situations I have ever seen in hsfb given what I have spelled out above.  We shall see.  At this point nothing will suprise me - let's not forget Groff fired one of the best hsfb coaches in socal who was willing to work tirelessly for peanuts (and had two state championships) simply because they had a personality conflict.  Also, Groff did not get along with Mack either who was another outstanding hsfb coach who was willing to work tirelessly for peanuts.  Anyone see a pattern here?  Everyone knows who I think needs to go... and it sure as hell was not Therrien.

RE: Who is the Next Head Coach at Saint Bonaventure?

It will be interesting to see what happens. I do disagree with your comment that Groff DOES NOT care about athletics. I know for a fact he is interested in athletics, If he wasn't why would he travel to the different events? I have seen him go a football game the night before and then be at a Cross-country event the next day at 7 am.
Groff cares about academics, let me throw this out there. How many of our kids are going to be professional athletes? I know we all dream and I know we all want that, but in reality it isn’t going to happen for the majority of us. When the time comes we will be thanking him for making our kids hit the books and really concentrate on their studies.

As far as the firing of the coaches, NO ONE knows exactly what happened and we speculate on what we think happened. Unless you have talked to the parties involved all together (Groff, Therrian, Mack) then don’t say a word. I am so tired of everyone placing blame and not knowing what really went on. Everyone thought that we would have a bad season; well we made it farther then Westlake and Oaks, at a lower seed in fact. So be grateful for that. I don’t care if we had Therrian , Mack or even a pro coach. The Seraphs did well and gave there all. We can’t win league or state every year. Let’s just thank God all our boys are well and no one sub stained any major injuries.

The only LOSER here is your stupid ignorant A..  living in a dream world. You probably never played ball in your life and if you did it was with some tiny school and now yopu are living your dreasms thru your kids. And yes I have been a lot longer then you are thinking, its people like you that make our program look bad with your stupidity. Yes I am as competitive as the next guy, but I am also realistic. YES it would be nice to win it every year. Is it possible…? NO!!! But then again you are ignorant. At the end of the day our kids learn to win and learn to lose. And in this world today it is nice to know that they know both sides of the coin.

St. Bonaventure has a great football program.  They compete every year against some of the best competition around. But the days of winning league or CIF every year are gone.  Competing for it perhaps, but not winning it.

When they were winning league and CIF virtually every year they were in an easier league, first Tri Valley and then Channel, and lower CIF divisions, mostly against public schools.

With their move into the Marmonte, and with greater competition from two private schools, Oaks and Westlake <grin>, and more recently other PAC 5 schools that now compete with them for talent and titles, the league and CIF titles have and will be fewer.

I hope they get a good coach and the program continues to perform at a high level. But let's not set unrealistic expectations, unless of course you've got a plan to get them back into the Tri-Valley or Channel League.

Totally agree with CautiouslyOptimistic especially since St. Bonnie is going against other private schools in the PAC 5 that have 2-3 times more kids enrolled in their schools.

Somewhat true, although I would like to add this: Those SB teams from 2001 to 2008 or so would've largely run through the current Marmonte league (Oaks, Westlake, et al) like a god damn buzzsaw. Being in the Channel league had nothing to do with it because the playoff division still included the exact same teams. If anything it got weaker with the Foothill league falling off a cliff into the dark ages after SB demolished Saugus/Hart in 2007/2008. Outside of maybe Westlake in 2010, or SB in 2012, there isn't a single Marmonte league team since 2009 that could've hung with those state title teams from SB, let alone the 2005 team.

People forget how extremely talented SB was for much of the last decade before Mack left and after 2009 when the talent pool dropped significantly.

SB will be fine now that they are getting back the local kids that had previously thought about going to Oaks. Looks like Oaks will be the one having a tougher time with players unless the Financial Aid starts flowing again. FYI WL is not a private school so all students get financial aid.

I think they will offer coach H the job..he did a great job with the frosh team and what better way to keep them from transferring. The kids are not going to OC but a lot will be going to Santa Clara as Mack was involved with the Warriors program. The good thing is Bonnie should still have a good upcoming class

Re: Who is the Next Head Coach at Saint Bonaventure?

coach H would be my first choice assuming that SB is not willing to pay for a big time coach from outside the program (which is pretty much a given)

In any event - I agree with the prior poster's sentiments that academics are the most important thing of all as few (if any) of these kids are ever going to go pro.  But with that being said... my point about Groff is that he had a whole lot of trouble getting along with Mack and Therrien.  At some point that has to reflect upon him.  1 time is random but 2 times is a little more than a coincidence.

Replace Groff. Then hire the Coach.

Most great HS coaches have an ego. Therrien and Mack included. The problem at St. Bonaventure is that Groff likes to flex his muscle every once in a while. He has a hard time coexsisting with a coach who has a dominant personality. Exit Therrien and Mack. Both had a vision that Groff did not like.

RE: Who is the Next Head Coach at Saint Bonaventure?

Isn’t that the truth brother.

I do not see a problem with a principle flexing muscle, it is a good balance. And the way I look at it, everything happens for a reason. Look at when Mack left, everyone thought OH NO… What is going to happen? Well we won 2 state championships back to back. And we are competitive. Everyone needs to stop worrying, our kids are all good, and they are athletic and have respect. The boys know the expectations and they know what they want.  If Coach H is offered the job he will be a great fit. He is great coach; the kids love him and respect him. And as an ex-coach, that is what matters. I much rather they respect me because they like me rather than fear me.

I don't think Bonnie hires a new coach either.
If they were going to they would be taking applications right now.
If they are taking apps then yes they will hire a coach, if they are not, the writing is on the wall.

Ask yourself why they wouldn't be going through the process right now.

Im just questioning it.
What makes us think they are?

I have not heard anything from the school saying that they are opening up the football coaching position and taking applications. I searched and cant find anything. how are prospective coaches supposed to know about this?
How many applications have they recieved?

Any school looking for a coach has it posted on the CIF website and Bonnie isn't on there. What gives?

How do you get coaches to apply for a job that isnt posted?

they should be trying to hire a coach ASAP

I seriously doubt it will be an outside hire, if for no other reason than money. I'm thinking Coach H. He would be the logical inside pick; if he wants it.
