Who's Gonna Be The New ND QB?

Now that the younger brother has officially checked out, who's it gonna be??? They have a good team coming back, great coaches and an awesome school. Sounds like a great home for somebody looking to land a starting gig.

Maybe Coach Rooney could speak to Coach Benkert? Help him out a little.

"Coach Rooney sucks".  Don't think I've heard that before.  I've been paying attention for a long time.

Maybe it's your problem, johnjohn.

"Sucks" Yes recently he has. You let a QB leave and replace him with what? OC joins the league and we won't win a game in league.

Get with the times Ventura. Nd will go the way of the Basketball program... To nothing!

Getting with the times might be my problem.  Exactly how did Rooney "let a QB leave"?  Didn't offer him tuition?  Didn't let him be a prima donna?  Didn't recruit properly so the team wasn't as strong as the QB (or his parents) wanted it to be?

Maybe Rooney should hang it up, or move down some divisions.  Playing in Pac 5 increasingly means selling your soul to compete.  You have to recruit a bunch of talent, which comes, very often, with a bunch of ego, a bunch of "me" players rather than "we" players.  Believe me, I know that schtick, seen it for years, first hand.  And these coaches who let the talent call the shots, or even let them slide in certain areas, do a disservice to the program, and more importantly, a disservice to the player they treat with kid gloves.

It's nothing new.  Russell White was much more talented than his Uncle, Charles White, who had a good pro career.  But Russell was babied by coaches throughout his time in Pop Warner and Crespi.  He wasn't taught the lessons he needed because he was so talented it didn't matter in HS.  Yes, if Redell would have made him tow the line he probably would have transferred, and Crespi has no D.1 title; it  still would have been the right thing to do.  Maybe the right thing that Rooney is doing with his x-QB.

I'd rather stop watching than "get with the times", Johnjohn.  That could be in my future for HS sports.  Or maybe I'll just watch my local Moorpark guys.  As long as that school has Lins, they will be the kind of team I want to watch.

I think Ventura hit it right on the head. Rooney should move down some divisions. He's not going to recruit the same way the other schools in the league do and "sell his soul". Also, don't think he sucks, just NO personality...Really, I think ND needs an O coordinator. There's kids on that team that can make plays but politics and that vanilla offense is keeping them from doing that. Hopefully they'll get a little more creative with the playbook next year. Especially if they get a QB who can at least throw a 5yd out...Cuz Kelly sure couldn't do it!

Sanfer - I didn't watch a lot of Hilinski during the year, but he threw some great deep balls to put ND back in the game late in the second half against Crespi.  And Crespi's strength last year was their secondary.  Ask Dunn of Alemany.

Those SEC coaches (Arkansas) must be fools to offer a QB who cant throw a 5 yd out.

Rooney and Mcnab were at youth championship games just a month and a half ago recruiting, believe me they are starting to see the need to get out and draw kids in rather than being the only real show in town like they were back in the early 2000's and all the best kids just showing up.  ND had a good team this year and they were as well coached as any team in the area.

With Croson at Nade and Herrington at Alemany ND has now lost kids that they may have easily gotten by default  5-6 years ago. They are out there actively looking for kids, if you dont think so you are a fool.

RE: Who's Gonna Be The New ND QB?

Ventura... YES RECRUIT!!!! ND had a TE that was slow and tiny. 6foot 190 pounds.. Seriously!!! 5 yard out? To who the WR that played both ways and was gassed all the time? I believe the WR and TE make the QB and ND HAD ZERO talent there.. THat #2 kid made a few plays. Only had the ball thrown to him 1-3 times a game and before you blame the QB he threw 7-10 times in a few games... They had Serra beat and the center snapped it 10 feet over the ND QB head... He is 6'6 or something like that... I'm sure you will blame him right Ventura?

Nade... Please stop pretending the recruit if they did they would have gone out and got a few WR. Mitchell averaged over 155 yards a game after the catch. ND WR averaged 11 yards a game after the catch. That's talent fool! ND doesn't have it..

Believe it... ND doesn't WIN 1 game next year in league... ANY TAKERS!!!!!

RE: Who's Gonna Be The New ND QB?

Ur a fool Nade...we all know they're out there...what I'm talking about when I said recruiting like the others, I mean financially. That's what it all comes down to. Parents want their kid to have free rides. And ND nor Chaminade will do it. Oh, and about Kellys deep ball...yeah he can throw one, but can't throw anything under 10 yards.

Re: Who's Gonna Be The New ND QB?

Looking over the posts of johnjohn tells me either you have a deep hatred of ND/Rooney or you are Helinski's dad or relative/friend. Rooney is a class act and treats people with respect. He has done that for 30 years.  Maybe you could learn a thing or two from him.  Your previous posts show a love for the ND QB. I saw him last year and this year and if he was 6'2 and not 6'6 he wouldn't even be a qb let alone a starter.
Like many qb's dad's you want to throw the ball more. ND had a great rb and an average qb. I wouldn't complain about throwing the ball too few times.  Against Bosco, ND threw the ball 40 times and completed 33%. In a previous post you talk about the rifle arm of the qb but he cant complete a 10 yd pass behind the line of scrimmage but i guess that is rooney's fault. I realize dad has spent  big $$$ and years with Clarkson but maybe you should have given that money to charity.
Going to pop warner game is not recruiting. Some of the best players are going to other schools because it is free. I think it is admirable that Rooney is not "selling his soul" - maybe twenty years from now his players will have a life lesson they can fall back on- after all this is just high school football. Everyone wants to win but there  are more important things.

Re: Who's Gonna Be The New ND QB?

Some people are correct with their assesment and some are off. Here are a couple things...

Tyler has a better temperment than his brother
Hilinski parents were looking at the bigger picture -- had more to do with the entire program than just their son
ND recruits...don't kid yourselves
Oddly enough, Rooney can call a pretty good offense
Sadly enough, McNab has struggled
ND is where they belong; a fresh mind might be what they need to make an impact

Re: Who's Gonna Be The New ND QB?

What about the program made the parents move him? Again, promoting the program and school alone is not what we're considering recruiting. We're talking freebies. ND won't do that. Believe me, I always hear parents in the inner city considering Crespi and Alemany. And when u ask them what about ND? The answer always is, "they don't give any money".

Alemany and Crespi dont get ALL the good athletes and it shows.  There are plenty of other good to great student athletes who's families can afford a little to all of their tuition that can handle and even may embrace the academic load at one of the other more demanding privates. Alemany and Crespi have these types of kids also but also kids on free tuition that would never make it past a semester at one of the more academically challenging schools. There is a place for everyone.
