"press conference"

HA HA HA HA

The "me" syndrome

And we wonder why these kids get all screwed up and the few that make it to the pros many times implode and lose everything.

Terrell Newby nears decision

Chaminade Prep star Terrell Newby hosted both Nebraska and UCLA over the past few days. Now the four-star running back is ready to make a decision. He plans to hold an announcement ceremony at Chaminade Prep on either Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Terrell Newby is down to Nebraska and UCLA.

Newby first hosted UCLA coach Jim Mora Jr. on Friday. The running back picked up an offer from the hometown Bruins in November.

The Friday meeting with Mora Jr. went well.

“It went pretty well,” he said. “Coach Mora is a real good guy. I like him a lot. He knows a lot about football. You can tell he’s spent hours on the game. He’s a good head coach and he has a good relationship with his players.”

Nebraska came out to see Newby and his family on Saturday. A caravan of Cornhusker coaches made the trip, including offensive coordinator Tim Beck, running backs coach Ron Brown and area recruiter Rich Fisher. All three coaches have been heavily involved in Newby’s recruiting.

“We just talked and talked about things other than football,” he said. “It was just a good time. I’m very comfortable with Nebraska’s staff.”

One area where Nebraska has excelled in Newby’s recruitment has been relationship building with his family. The NU coaches have earned the trust and respect of Newby’s family and that’s a big deal.

“I think they’re very comfortable with Nebraska,” he said. “There’s not one coach they’re not comfortable with there. They wouldn’t have a problem sending me off there. Those coaches are great people.”

Newby first came on Nebraska’s board in April. The Husker staff heavily pursued the speed back and attempted to get him out to see the spring game. The running back was set to visit, but his flight was canceled and he didn’t make the trip.

After convincing Newby not to commit to Cal, Nebraska was then able to get the back out to Lincoln for Big Red Weekend. The first visit proved to be a strong enough success that Newby came back for an official visit to see the Idaho State game.

Now he’s ready to make the decision. Besides having a clear understanding of where he wants to go, Newby wants to finish his recruitment in order to focus on his International Bowl appearance.

“I definitely want the chance to represent my country,” Newby said. “That’s the only reason I chose to play in that game over other ones. It’s one of the few chances I get to do that, especially with this sport.

“Yeah, I know when I go there I’ll be committed. Most of the guys in it are already committed. This is probably the most hectic month for recruiting so I wanted to get that done so I can focus on other things.”

The decision is right there for Newby but he’ll take a little extra time.

“Yeah, I feel pretty good about where I want to go,” he said. “I’m pretty sure. My family has been in full support of my decision. No matter where I go there going to be with my team and will support me. I’ve been leaning on them throughout the process.”

Wow, that's the pot calling the kettle black. A lot of people want to know where he's going. I may be mistaken, but I swear I noticed a post with you in a picture from your vacation that NOBODY asked to see...yeah, that's not "me" syndrome at all. If nobody cared about Newby's intentions then there wouldn't be a conference. Congratulations to Newby wherever he goes.

Re: "press conference"

Oh please tell me we don't have "me" syndrome problem in today's youth.

All they needed to do was have the release on Monday or Tuesday, simple as that, the rest is all "me" hype that is being poured on this very talented young man. I don't blame Newby, it's the way the system works and it's taking it's toll on many young athletes. Nothing wrong with a press conference but the 'hype' leading to it is just nuts.

Everything I've seen directly from Newby is classy, this is something tossed on him but once it is unleashed over and over it wears off ........... sad

In concrast to the 'hype' we have the classy one ..... Coach Ladouceur. No pre hype, just a media release, a 10 minute speech which was about everyone else but not himself, classy guy ......

As far as the "me" picture you obviously are new, the annual picture has been going on for over a decade. I think I've made 3 post in a week .......... yup, it's all about "me" wink

Re: "press conference"

I wholeheartedyly agree with your assessment that there is a "Narcissism Epidemic" (good book if people got some time to kill). It seemed like your post was putting the blame on a kid and tarnishing an occasion that should be viewed as a positive celebration and that's why I replied. I also agree LaDouceur is a class act. I'd be willing to bet Newby thanks his parents, his teammates, his coaches and the fans who helped him reach this point in the same manner and fashion. Hopefully Newby's inner circle has taught him that self-worth isn't measured in yards gained, public exposure or entourages...I'm an optomist so I'm going to assume they have.

Nice post.

Newby is a great kid with a good head on his shoulders, hes a team player.
Its all about the team and bringing more positive recognition to the school and the program and everyone involved that helped to get him to this point.

Congratulations to him and Chaminade as a school for the fine job they have done and continue to do.

Congrats to Newby a humble and soft spoken kid who deserves all that's coming his way. Also, congrats Chaminade, coach Croson and coaches for continuing to do a excellent job with your students / athletes.

Re: Newby Commits...

I agree, Newby is a class act. Wherever he goes the school will be better for it. I just hope and pray he has his head on well enough to not get caught up in all the hype. Personally I think he will be fine.

I think he will go UCLA biggrin

If it is positive and has to do with nade Beercat, you are sure to post a negative comment.
Its like clockwork. 2 years in a row you have tried to put down a Nade kid and his college commitment.
Sam hardy last year witha stupid photoshop, now Newby.

What is your problem Beercat?

Re: "press conference"

What is your problem Bozo ..........

Read the thread bird brain  ........

95% of what I say about Nade is about you Bozo.

Now what did Beercat ACTUALLY say about the talented young man.

“I don't blame Newby”

“Everything I've seen directly from Newby is classy,”

“I agree, Newby is a class act. Wherever he
goes the school will be better for it. I just hope and pray he has his head on

Enough said

Re: "press conference"

Why is there always someone who takes an opinion out of context. Any opinion that doesn't quite conform gets put on blast. I completely agree with beercat. It wasn't long ago when Jimmy clausen put on his dog and pony show on ESPN. Driving up in the limo, with his sun glasses and posse in tote. Im not comparing him to a class act like Newby, but come on its High school football. Save it for signing day.

Would Newby commit to the Bruins if he became a daddy in the near future?

Re: "press conference"

Not sure how that figures into anything.  It's anyones guess where he goes, but UCLA didn't enter the picture until he scored 8 td's against Harvard Westlake whereas Nebraska has been after him for a long time.  Wonder whether the early bird gets the worm or the flashier Johnny come lately school?
