Central Section Rankings 1/29

Central Section Rankings 1/29

A day late, but not a buck short:

1. Stockdale: took care of Centennial more easily in round 2....still the class of the valley, and one of the strongest teams in recent years.

2. Clovis West:  will not lose another game during the regular season; will see what they have during the playoffs, when they will have a tough semifinal matchup.

3. Hanford:  bent but haven't broken against challenges from Lemoore and Redwood....youth doesn't seem to be a factor with this bunch. Probably won't get the top seed from CIF because of their love affair with Yosemite....but they deserve it.

4. Yosemite:  a good win out of section last Saturday, and the Badgers won't be challenged again until the playoffs. They have three weeks to develop a consistent second scoring threat.

5. Edison: easily dispatched Sanger to solidify their status as the top seed in Division II this year. Seem to be getting more consistent as the season unfolds.

6. Centennial: destined once again to playing second fiddle in their own league....Peters nonetheless putting up impressive numbers.

7. Sanger:  despite the disappointing loss at home to Edison, Coach Case will make some adjustments for their next meeting. Still a dangerous team.

8. Redwood:  cannot beat a solid Hanford squad with 30 turnovers and less than 50% from the charity stripe. Need more consistent play from their point guard and center to make a run in playoffs.

9. Chavez:  right now probably the #3 seed in Division III; could fall to #4 if they lose again in the EYL.

10. Liberty:  solid squad is the class of the SEYL, with Bakersfield their only challenger. Will be a tough semifinal matchup in the Division I semifinal.

11. Lemoore:  made their Hanford tilt a respectable loss after being overwhelmed early in the game. They get a chance to play for second on Friday against Redwood.

12. Tehachapi: loss to Arvin in explicable, but with Katie Avila leading the way, a threat in Division III.

13. Bakersfield:  win over Garces makes them solidly the second best in SEYL; another talented team that could cause trouble.

14. Sunnyside:  dropping in the poll because of the decisive loss to Edison.

15. Ridgeview:  bad loss to Stockdale not anything to be ashamed about.

Games to watch this week:

Sanger v. Memorial
Centennial v. Ridgeview
Arvin v. Tehachapi
North v. Centennial
Redwood v. Lemoore
Clovis West v. Central
El Diamante v. Hanford

I agree with you for the most part, but I'm unsure about ranking Ridgeview and Tehachapi that high. I think I would put El D or maybe Central up there. I  would even put Bullard up there ahead of them. I don't what's happening with Sunnyside. They are too talented to not be in the top ten.

Re: Central Section Rankings 1/29

I have seen alot of Sunnyside's games this year.  I really do not think they have an excessive amount of talent.  They are getting by in a weak D1 league, with their strongest opponent hurt by injuries.  In last weeks game against Memorial, they were not that dominant with Memorial missing their point guard and Hatton injured and limping up and down the court the entire game.  My guess is when Memorial is at full strength, that game would be even.  That is probably a fair assessment of Sunnyside's talent, they are just not that deep and very vulnerable to a press.  The coach is doing OK with the talent she has.

I agree with olddog. Tehacapi has alot of wins but they are against some fairly weak opponents. I think if they were in a league that was just average they would not have near as many wins. I would drop them below 15 at least. Katie is a good player but one athlete does not a team make.

Re: Central Section Rankings 1/29

If things go as they are right now, you could see a great rematch possibly of last year's Clovis West-Centennial game in the Div. 1 semifinals.  I believe Stockdale should get the #1 seed pretty easily, and then Clovis West will probably get the #2 seed by being a league champ, maybe  not though and Centennial will get #3.  Only different scenario I see is Centennial getting by Clovis West with the argument that 2 of their 3 losses were to Stockdale or 3 of 4 depending on what happens in next weeks game.
I agree, Tehachapi is rated to high, they're not that strong really.
I think 1-10 is pretty solid picks and accurate.
Edison just sent a strong strong message that they should walk in the Div. 2 tourney, I don't see anyone else giving them much of a game, based on how they played against Sanger!
Let me drop a team you don't want to play in the playoffs, Chavez, in Div. 3 playoffs, someone is not going to be very happy as they are going to cause some fits, especially if their outside shooting is on.
Sunnyside, I think they're over-rated, they look like they'd be decent, but they just don't get results.
Div. 3 playoffs, I still say will be the most fun division to watch, there'll be some decent quarterfinal games, and some great semi-final games.

Re: Central Section Rankings 1/29

Well how about a stab at the rankings by Division.

D1:   I think this will be the likely seeds pending a major upset.  Don't think Centennial has  the depth of CW.

1)  Stockdale

2)  Clovis West

3)  Centennial

4-6)  Liberty, Bakersfield, Sunnyside Pick em.

D2:  I thought it would be a walkaway but then Edison loses to Bullard and Sanger  barely gets by  Memorial  last night.  You don't know who will show up with each night.
1)  Edison
2)  Sanger
3)  Lemoore
4)  Ridgeview
5)  Monache

D3:  Central Section and fingeroll are right, this is the division to watch.  Both Semi games should be great!  Yosemite's very weak league schedule may come back to Haunt them.    The Hanford freshman are seasoned beyond their years but they live and die by the 3 and weak on the boards.  Someone with a strong point guard and some size will give Hanford problems.  Overall may be the deepest division wrt team talent  in the central section.
1)  Hanford
2)  Yosemite
3)  Caesar Chavez
4)  Redwood
5)  El D

D4:  This one is wide open.  If Memorial is fully healthy, they should be the favorite.  Much tougher schedule than any of the other D4 schools reflected in their record.   It will be hard for the folks who seed to not seed league champs (Exeter, Garces) higher but their schedules are much weaker.     Garces humming along down south and Sierra could surprise as well.  Fowler a nice record but have not played anyone.   Exeter still looking for some guards.

1)  Garces
2)  Memorial
3)  Exeter
4)  Fowler
5)  Corcoran

Re: Central Section Rankings 1/29

Not much to disagree with, Eye. I too was blown away by the results of both the Edison/Bullard game and the Sanger/Memorial battle. That game alone could give Memorial the #2 seed in D4.

In DI, I agree the 1 through 3 seeds will land right where you place them, although Centennial has better personnel than CW. #4 should go to Liberty.

D2 looks right to me, and is proof again how weak the division is. Sanger and Edison will walk to the final, which will be their third game of the year.

I still think that the mysterious band of CIF seeders will give Yosemite the top seed in D III. On the one hand, you could argue they deserve it based on their last three seasons; on the other, anyone watching knows they are not that good. Hanford has had a remarkable year, and should get the #1, but probably won't. That should set up a Yosemite / Redwood semi, which will be interesting. After all, Redwood won the DII championship game last year as a #4 seed. Chavez will wilt in the semis as they did last year, because physically they just cannot keep up by season's end.

Memorial is likely the strongest team in D IV, but they won't get the #1 seed either. Garces has a nice record but no quality wins to speak of. Like last year, Exeter just keeps getting better as the year goes on. A Memorial/Exeter semi would be better than the Valley final in this division.
