Some thoughts on the Josh Shaw story...

Some thoughts on the Josh Shaw story...

I got a call last night from someone I trust who had information about this story being false. I won't go into all the details but it did involve law enforcement and did not involve saving anyone from drowning.

Before that I had a feeling there was something strange about this story. And the more people I talked to, the more it seemed like others felt something was off as well.

The timeline didn't make much sense. If Josh Shaw drove to Palmdale after Salute to Troy, that would mean that this 7 year old was out by the pool alone at 10pm or later. I guess that situation could happen, but it seems rather unlikely.

Also the reaction after USC released the story was overwhelmingly positive from USC fans and the media. But we saw only one current USC player post an original Tweet about Shaw. One other player retweeted a couple of media Tweets and that was it. For a captain on the team to save a kid's life and get hurt in the process, wouldn't his teammates be talking about it? They weren't.

If players had heard something different from what USC released, it would make sense that they would not Tweet anything about it. But if the players knew something, shouldn't USC have known something too?

If Shaw's story was false, it seems like there are two possibilities here, either USC knew the story was false and it was part of some coverup or they believed the story and ran with it without checking any of it out first. My guess is the latter considering Sark had to do a reversal today.

Dan Weber reported earlier that both Steve Sarkisian and J.K. McKay interrogated Shaw extensively about his story sometime yesterday. Sark then said today after practice that he had received calls questioning Shaw's story within the past couple of hours.

The strangest part about this story is Josh Shaw IS a well liked, great guy who we have not heard a bad word about. It would make the saving his nephew story that much more believable. But now, there are just so many questions that the original story USC released seems unlikely to be true.

We are talking with a police source right now. Will let you know what I find out.

More to come...

Every single person involved with this story in the Sports Information Office including and especially, Tim Tessalone, should be fired effective immediately. How they could bungle something like this given everything USC knows about the media and how things work and in light of what happened at ND with Manti Te'o is beyond belief. Running to press with something like this is incompetent beyond belief.

I won't even get into Josh Shaw if this is true, because what is there to even say at this point?

I pretty much agree.  It seems way too frequent these days that a story gets passed around as news without any fact checking.  The Manti Teo thing went on for about a year for crying out loud!

Little bit of sympathy for a 22 year old who has to answer to his coaches and teammates for getting hurt, and makes up a story without really thinkin through the scrutiny that is going to come with it.

But for a bunch of adults in the public affairs professional a major university to put this statement out before having a command of the facts -- when there are clear issues with the timeline that should have been obvious -- is comical.

Lots of people better start looking to update their resumes.

Oh, you mean like YOU were asking for the heads of any poster that dared suggest caution?  That kind of waiting??  That's why I interjected the thoughts I did.

Need help getting that egg off your face?

First off, I'm not even a USC fan and I hope that the kids story is true. We need heroes in this world and, frankly, we don't need more stories about kids screwing up.

And I feel for the kids. My short term memory may be going but I remember what an immature lad I was when I was in college. Damn few of us have a right to live through the experience what with all the stupid stuff we do -- from speeding to drinking to speeding and drinking. At least when I screwed up, it wasn't national news.

I don't know exactly what went into USC releasing this story, but Tim Tessalone runs the sports information department and they deal with the media. This story was from the athletic department and the RipsIt Blog. Tim and his team are not usually involved in that, but like I said, I don't know who all contributed to this story.
